Hilton beach is great

from A TripAdvisor Member
QUE PASO?!! I can't say anything bad about the Caribe Hilton. We arrived late at night and check-in was fine. The double double garden room was fine, balcony overlooking the garden. The room was clean and had a mini-bar, which was a good place to put my store bought beer. The beach is great, quiet, easy lagoon with the breakers out beyond the jetty. We even watched a couple get married right there on the beach!
The Olas spa has great food, I had the steak and cheese wrap - yummy.
We did have to pay 10.00 for parking though. But at check-out when I disputed a 10.00 beverage charge, they simply removed it. OH YEAH, Warning, I had walked down the street to one of those local food joints the morning of check-out: 30 minutes to get a fried egg sandwich!!!
Mostly, the local service in San Juan is severely lacking! A great night out is Saturday night at the El San Juan Hotel and Casino, where all the gorgeous people mingle in the lobby bar. Old San Juan is not dangerous the way the fodor's books makes it out to be. There are local cops everywhere. Took a nice walk around El Morro. Went to Senor Frog's - there was a cruise ship in, so it felt like stupid long island, but the place is fun. Coqui?!

Our Experience at the Caribe Hilton 6/19-24/2003

I made the choice to stay at the Caribe Hilton by reading reviews as well as thoroughly researching this property. It was a tough decision whether to stay at the Wyndom or the Caribe Hilton, however the reviews written by other travellers was the deciding factor. First let me encourage you to go on hotel sites and read the comments made by those who have stayed there. Those comments can be very helpful. I found the hotel to be very nice and well kept up. The staff was helpful, with the exception of two gentlemen who happened to work at the Concierge's Desk. Please know I will be sharing my comments about their attitude with the Caribe Hilton Management Staff along with a suggestion that those two individuals receive more training in providing customer service if they are to continue in that type of a position. The rooms were nicely decorated with adequate space. The restaurant prices were extremely high and the food wasn't exceptional, espcially for the price. Although the hotel was full the majority of our stay, we never experienced any loud sounds---that says a lot about the quality of the facility. Unless you desire to stay in the heart of Old San Juan or San Juan, the Caribe Hilton is the place to stay, especially if you want a comfortable but stylish facility with very professional and courteous staff (with the exception of two gentlemen at the Concierge's Desk) The Health Spa-Fitness Center was excellent. The pool area was lovely and the grounds were very nice. My only two recommendations would be -Eat somewhere else so that you can enjoy more activities with your money, and wait for the shift to change if you find the staff (Eric and Jose) at the Concierge's desk unfriendly and not very helpful - believe me there are other staff who are excellent.

Agreed, OK But Not Great

I got our room for $65 (priceline) a night and that was about what it was worth. Compared to the Hilton Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii this resort is second rate. I can't imagine anyone paying $200-$1000 a night to stay here. I travel a lot and am a Hilton Goldcard holder. Their complimentary Hilton Honors member's lounge with continental breakfast and afternoon snacks is a joke. I usually see better at a Hampton Inn. The rooms were just standard rooms but with mold, missing paint, burnt out light bulbs, clock not set, broken sink plugs, ants in bathroom, fridge didn't work, pool was dirty, and the directions for the room safe were so worn you couldn't read them. I expect much better from a Hilton, although I was told that this was a nice hotel for the carribean area. Having said all that, the staff was, courteous and helpful, the food was excellent, but pricey, and Puerto Rico was fabulous. Rent a car from Charlie car rental about $30 a day, take a catarmaran snorkeling trip ($55) and visit the rain forest (awesome.) Old San Juan is typical tourist shops and some good restuarants. If I was to go back I would stay in the Embassy Suites or near Condado area, a nice place to walk, shop, and eat. If you want nice beaches get away from San Juan, visit Culebra or one of the other smaller islands. Great place, overpriced hotel.

Everything butt the...

I stayed at the Caribe for a week this past spring and absolutely loved it. The Concierge, Eric, is fabulous, friendly and knowledgeable. He sent my travelling companinon and I to some off the beaten path local restaurants that were wonderful. My only criticism of the hotel is the omnipresence of cigarette butts in the sand, both in the coconut grove, and on the beach. There are NO outdoor ashtrays or spent-butt-buckets anywhere at the resort, which is a disappointment. At high tide, the butts are loosed from the sand and float in the water everywhere. Surely a hotel of this caliber could arrange for either ashtrays, or at the very least, sift the sand regularly. If you don't mind the "filter fish", it's a perfect vacation selection.

I loved the hotel

I had a super time this spring break. Puerto Rico is gorgeous and the people are great. I think that Puerto Rico is one of the most romantic places to be if you are traveling with someone special. If you are traveling alone it is still awesome. The clubs are also fun. The Caribe Hilton is an excellent hotel to stay at. The hammocks are cool and the pool and view of the ocean are great. When I go back to San Juan (Condado), the Caribe Hilton is where I will stay. The hotel is a little out of the way of downtown San Juan, but it only takes 5 to 7 minutes to get downtown by cab depending on the traffic. Personally, I prefer it that way.

OK, not great

from A TripAdvisor Member
Having read most of the reviews, my wife and I were really expecting a very beautiful hotel. The hotel property was beautiful (although they are doing construction right next to the hotel) and was not too disappointing. The restaurants at the hotel are very good (but definitely overpriced). The bar was pretty fun--This hotel is the place where the Pina Colada first was made, so that was pretty cool. Our hotel room, however, was fairly dirty (especially the bathroom) and just quite average. The pool is ok, the small beach was ok. The dock overlooking the ocean and tropical fish was really neat (there are shark and baracuda at night--really cool). Rent a car (although the traffic is horrible) or expect to pay for taxis. Walking from this area is pretty spooky, especially at night! We wouldn't go back to Puerto Rico or Caribe Hilton until we visit the other 100 places we would like to see.

Grand time at a bargain rate

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed from May 17th thru 23rd and had a great time. Basically, we got the room for under $100 so in my opinion this place is a downright luxury bargain. The room basically looked like every other Hilton room -- nice, clean but corperate. Our room had a view of the inlet (and part of the parking garage). The staff was exceptionally friendly. The spa was expensive but wonderful. The beach was private, a little rocky, but nice(fantastic snokeling right off the shore -- thousands of fish). The grounds and pool area are extraordinary and well maintained. The food and drinks were overpriced and mediocre, but considering it's hotel food, we expected that. The location near Old San Juan was wonderful, you're better off just taking the bus (25c) or taxi ($8) and enjoying the amazing restaurants there. The giftshop (again) is overpriced but we just went to the Walgreens in Old San Juan to stocked up on water and supplies for 1/3 of the price. Travel desk was staffed by an insane (but very friendly & helpful) woman. Highly recommend the "Spread Eagle" Catamaran trip and the Rainforest tour. Basically I stay here before I'd stay anywhere in the Condado, though the Intercontinental and Wyndham in Isle Verde are nicer (but far from Old San Juan which is the gem of the city).

Past Prime

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is past it's prime. It's aging and showing it. Although the view was beautiful, the water would not turn off in the shower - had to call maintenance, the maid left the sheets she changed dumped on the floor, the room was small. Overall it was just an okay hotel - would not stay there again.

Loved Puerto Rico

from A TripAdvisor Member
We arrived at Caribe Hilton and we loved the open lobby, parrot and live music playing. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was ready after 20 minutes during which time they told us where we could change and place our bags if we wanted to go to the pool. The hotel has been remodeled recently and the lobby, outdoor pools, restaurants, and shops show it. We felt this was the best grounds possible with many pools, palm trees, hammocks, swim to bars it was a dream! We only had seven days and we did many day trips but had a hard time because it was so beautiful at the Caribe Hilton. You can easily walk the 3 miles to Old San Juan, it is a beautiful walk all along the ocean. You can find amazing food in Condado area a 1/2 mile walk. The tour through the hotel to Culebra snorkeling was the best. Lonely Planet tour book is very helpful. LOVED IT!

When we arrived in at the Caribe Hilton on 5/18/2003, we were pleasantly suprised at the landscape and grounds, but horribly dissappointed with the room. First of all, it had wood panel walls, the bathrrom sink nobs wouldn't turn unless you are Hulk Hogan, and the balcony door didn't open until my 250lb boyfriend literally threw himself on it. The room itself had the look of a cabin in the mountains rather than a tropical paradise. We aren't cpmlainers, so we sucked it up and decided to make the best of the resort without asking to switch rooms.the staff were generally pleasant, but I was very embarrassed one night when I went to take a walk on the pier very late and one of the lobby men came out to see if I was alright, thinking that maybe I was going to jump or something. It was nice he was concerned but I was very uncomfortable with the situation. Everything else was okay throughout the week, but then again we didn't spend much time at the hotel. The real kicker was at the end of the week when we had to leave and called for a wake-up call for 5:00am. We didn't recieve the call, or at least we thought we didn't when we woke up at 8:00 am and realized we missed our flight! My boyfriend went to the front desk immediately and talked to a man named Lewis who informed us that the hotel "made a mistake and they were very sorry". When we checked for the next flight, the next one we could get was 4 days away! So we had to spend 4 more nights and lots more money not to mention missed work. The hotel refused to help compensate us at all including giving us a room for any of those four nights. Then another desk clerk had the gull to say that we had recieved the wake-up call, but we must have slept through it. After lots of investigating it was determined that our phone malfunctioned. After all of this, we didn't get so much as an "I'm sorry" from this "5 star" hotel. Absolutely ridiculous! We would never stay there again and we don't recommend that anyone else does either. Thedham which are priced the same and much more elegant.
