The most relaxing vacation I've ever had!

If you truly want to have a relaxing, fun vacation with young children -- FDR is the place for you. I have returned five years in a row and will continue to go back every year until my children lose their interest (Not likely)! You can do as much or as little as you like, all while not having to worry for a second whether or not your children are entertained and having fun. The service and friendliness of the staff really makes the whole trip. I have been to many five-star luxury hotels where the service did not even compare to what you will experience at FDR. As a single mother of three young children, my vacation begins at the check-in desk upon arrival and continues until the moment we check out. The vacation nanny's are an experience that is hard to describe to people. Your children fall in love with their nanny almost immediately -- and she truly becomes a member of your family. I should be a spokesperson for FDR and Jamaica because of all the times I have spoken about both to as many people that will listen.

Everythings IRIE at FDR, Runaway Bay

What a wonderful vacation. I mean it in every sense of the word Wonderful. Let me begin by saying don't frett over the nannies. When my family and I arrived at the gates of FDR, I could feel the warmth surrounding the place. I was getting very excited about the whole week, meeting our nanny and seeing the property. Yeah right who am I kidding I couldn't wait to sink my toes into the carribean sea.The suite is so great. At first, I was thinking to myself could be nicer then I started to feel like thank Goodness this isn't just a bedroom. It was excellent, a small kitchen, living room, bath and big bedroom over looking the pool/ocean and the other balcony was over looking the playgrounds. My children 3 and 1 were delighted with the playground and the swimming pool. Kiddie Centre is a good place to hang out away from the sun. Crafts are done outdoors under a canopy near the main playground. My babies weren't the friendliest to our Nanny (alicia) but she dealt with it and even showed them alot of patience and understanding. By the time we (my husband and I) left and did our alone stuff, our children were in good hands and they knew it. Alicia was so spectacular. I.E. She watched carefully and listened intently to me and my family. Therefore, she was able to fill in as third best. You know, if not Mom, if not Dad than yeah okay let's have Alicia. Tennis lessons for the preschoolers and also a killer super duper slide. My 1 year old turned 1 in Jamaica and FDR made sure to celebrate this milestone by throwing my daughter a one year birthday party on the beach. What a great place to visit and make friends. We met some really nice families and befriended a family that stayed in the suite next to ours. My husband enjoyed himself so much he wants to return the same week next year. If you have any questions, please e-mail me and I'll answer honestly. The adult games were alot of fun too. Beer drinking contest, scavenger hunt, usually around the pool deck. The entertainers are fun, friendly and easy going. Our stay at FDR, Runaway Bay was a remarkable experience. I truly loved this place.

FDR is Great for Families

from MISnowbird77
As indicated in other reviews, FDR is not at the top of the heap in luxury, or "curb appeal." However, I have been to a lot of all-inclusive resorts, and FDR is hard to beat for friendly, attentive service. I highly recommend it if you have kids.We just returned from FDR after a week's stay. We took our two children, 4 and 7, as well as my wife's parents. FDR has a special deal in January, where grandparents stay free, and you get upgraded to a 2 bedroom suite, so the week turned out to be a pretty good deal. The resort also gave us a ground floor suite, all on one level, right on the beach, to accomodate my in-laws needs. So that was impressive right off the bat. Also, the suites are very large, with lots of room to spread out.Of course, the nannies are probably the biggest draw at this resort. Our nanny, Anthea, was very professional and great with the kids. My four year old daughter loved her. I thought we might not use the nanny services that much, but it gave us a lot of flexibility, not just to have some grown up time, but it also enabled us to do things with one kid while the other was doing something else. Other guests had very positive things to say about their nannies, so I think the management must do a good job hiring and retaining quality people. Just remember to tip well! There are tons of activities for kids -- crafts, sports, snorkeling trips, kayaking, sailing, glass-bottom boat rides, entertainment, etc. The under teen set will love the place (and if they are happy, Mom and Dad are happy). The resort also has a pretty good dive shop, and you get one free dive per day. The reef is overfished, but in pretty good shape compared to some other parts of Jamaica. There are several adults only areas, including a spa on the pier for massages (my wife and father-in-law raved about the masseuses), a hot tub, a very nice piano bar, and an Italian restaurant where you can have a private dining experience while you pay the nanny to watch your kids. The resort has a lot of trips, including a couple that are free with a vacation package -- Dunn's River Falls and shopping in Ocho Rios. In fact, quite a few extra come with a vacation package -- the trips, diving, snorkeling, golf, and two 30 minute massages. As other reviews have mentioned, the beach is no hot shakes, but there is a nice public beach within a 5 minute walk -- so no problem, mon.The food is better than average for an all-inclusive resort. I had no complaints.

FDR - Excellent for pre-schoolers and more!

from srmzoom
My wife and I and our 2 daughters (age 2 & 4) spent 1 week at FDR from Nov 29 to Dec 6 and really enjoyed it. I did a bunch of research before I left and chose FDR because it seemed the best place to go for parents with pre-school age children and we were not disappointed. Lots of places seem to have programs for school age kids, but if anyone knows a better resort for pre-schoolers, I would like to hear about it! Here are some details below.

The rooms are huge and clean and nice with big balconies, but not super luxurious. They had a special on to upgrade to a 2 bedroom suite because it was low season and it was definitely worth it for us so the kids could have their own room. The resort is setup as a bunch of 3 story blocks of suites. Each of the blocks has between 4 and 12 suites with 76 in total. For the most part the 1 bedroom suites are on the ground floor and the 2 bedroom suites are on the 2nd and 3rd floors (see the floor plan on the website for details of the room layout).
Sometimes there are other things (like the shops or kids center) on the ground floor, then the 1 bedroom suites are on the 2nd floor and the 2 bedrooms suites are on the 3rd and 4th floor. While the rooms were fine for me, they were not perfect and if you expect a 5 star resort, you might be disappointed. For example, the hot water didn't work properly in our kitchen sink and in the heavy rain, water would drip on the window seat in our bedroom. For me I valued the fact that we had 2 bedrooms and lots of space over having more luxury.

The nannies and all the staff are all friendly and very nice and helpful. Of course the nannies all have different personalities. Ours was very quiet and our kids would play with her for a couple of hours, but because they were young, they would come back to us after a while.
We managed to get a couple of hours break each day to do what we wanted which was great and more than we get at home. You have to coordinate your schedule a bit around the nannies since they work from 9-12:30 and 1:30-4:40. They also are responsible to clean the rooms so ours would typically do that while our 2 year old napped. We had ours come back twice in the evening so we could go out for dinner which was great!

The beach is very small and you can only get out to about 2.5 feet deep which is great if you have small children like ours, but might be disappointing for older kids. There is a much bigger beach next door (with a small nude section) though if you want to walk on the beach or go swimming.

There are lots of daytime activities for kids and adults to do: crafts, tennis, sailing, kayaking, scuba, golf, biking, etc. Mostly we just relaxed and read a book which is something we don't get to do much at home. My 2 year old loved the little slide pool and my 4 year old loved the big pool and the slide pool (but she had to slide with Dad). There are 3 small playgrounds on the resort with slides and climbers, plus and indoor play area. The resort was apparently full over American Thanksgiving, but within a couple days of us arriving it was very quiet (probably only 20 or so families). There did not appear to be much nightlife, but since we were pretty tired most nights, we just went to bed. Nightlife is probably better when the resort is full, but being a family resort, its probably not the place to go for wild parties.

I thought the food was quite good, but its not 5 star gourmet. My wife and I are vegetarian and my 2 year old has lots of allergies so we were constantly asking the chef for special requests and they were very accomadating which was great. As a vegetarian we did not get alot of variety -- mostly pasta and curries, but all of the food was quite good. There are basically 3 restaurants, 1 for kids, 1 for families and 1 for adults only (just dinner). The adult only restaurant had the best food in my opinion, but all of it was pretty good. The wine was surprisingly good for an all inclusive and the rum fruit drinks were great!

The drive to the resort was a bit slow and windy because they are building a new highway from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios, but both of our drivers drove safely. I was a bit disappointed that the van on the way there did not have seatbelts so we asked for a van with seatbelts on the way home and got one. I think the normal van to the airport has seatbelts, but if you want to be sure, make sure you ask for seatbelts.

One other nice feature was that the resort also had Jamaican families vacationing there as well. This is quite different then some resorts I have heard about where locals are not allowed. I asked the manager about it and he said that they had quite a few Jamaican families, primarily on weekends.

If you want 5 star luxury, gourmet food, 5 mile long white sandy beaches and wild adult parites, this is not the place for you. However, I would highly recommend it to parents looking to have a family vacation and get a break themselves, especially with small children.
The suites are huge, the service is great, the staff is friendly, the nannies are a big help, there is lots to do and the food is good - yah mon!

We spent a week at FDR from 11/29/03 to 12/6/03. My husband and I travelled with our almost 2 and almost 4 year old boys. This place is great for families with young children. The nannies are great although ours was on the quieter side. They have tons of activities for young children and great kiddy pools. The beach is small and protected.
perfect for young kids. Adults can go next door to beaches (be warned they have a nude section). The nannies care for the kids from 9 am to 4:45 pm with a lunch break and time out to clean the room. They are also available at night for $4/hour. We used ours each night to have dinner without the kids. The food was very good especially at the pier restaurant. The only complaint is lack of adult activities. The game room was in poor repair. The piano bar and disco were empty each night.
This may be because it was a slow week for the resort. The service here is great. The staff is very friendly. The drinks and bar service are great.

Franklin knows families

FDR is a wonderful family resort. The staff made our vacation one of the best ever. Every single employee we had contact with was polite and professional. They went out of their way to learn our names and give us one on one attention. We brought our 2 kids (1 and 2.5) with us and they really enjoyed the special treatment they received from the nannies, servers, entertainers and activity staff. We were lucky to be one of only about 25 families there at the time of our vacation in Nov. This was probably a big factor with our positive impression. This also meant that we became close with the other families at the resort. The rooms were spacious and very clean. I was a little disapointed that our "King" bed was two twins pushed together and therefore a little short for me. The nanny (Ann Marie) started at about 9:30 everymorning, took an hour for lunch and finished up by 4:40. During the day they are also responsible for cleaning the room and stocking the fridge with drinks and snacks that you can order. Ann Marie was very nice and was a big help. We thought she could have tried to have more fun with the kids or be more active with them, but overall we were satisfied with her. The food was excellent. The small beach area was OK for the small kids but not really any good for swimming. The "Breezes" beach next door is great for walking and swimming. We would go back to FDR, but not during peak periods, 25 families was nice and relaxing, 75 families would be too many for this small resort.

We had the best vacation ever! My children, aged 8 and 13 loved everything, especially their nanny Simone. The staff are so freindly and helpful. We couldn't have asked for a better vacation, except for it to be longer. We can't wait to go back. Judy

Loved It

I'm fourteen and from NJ. Me&my family (consisting of my mom, dad, 19 y/o sister, 16 y/o brother, 14 y/o sister and me) just got back from FDR Saturday night. We went for seven days, eight nights. Let me tell you, I absolutely loved it there. You can't ask for a more friendly staff. Me&my brother and sisters made some really really great friends that we won't forget. Me and my 14 year old sister got to be best friends with both the teen coordinator Dave and the kiddie coordinator Dale. I have to agree with the other reviews that this is definitely a FAMILY resort, not a couples resort. If you and your boyfriend/girlfriend are looking for somewhere to go and relax and be pampered 24/7, then FDR is not for you. As a family resort, there are many children, ranging from very very young, to around 17. If you do have kids? Definitely consider this a possibility. There are so many activites both on the property and off. Kids will never be bored, and I'm speaking from experience. The teen center offers many trips for only about 10$. They also have a special teens dinner, a movie every night, videogames, TV, and a disco every night. For the younger children, there is a seperate kiddie room with small couches, TV, video games, arts&crafts room where you can make t-shirts, seperate room with ballpit, beds, stuffed animals, books, movies, and other toys. The food isn't outstanding, but it is good. Do I recommend this? Definitely. I will be going back next summer, and probably summers after that.

Me and my boyfriend just got back from Jamica (8/13-8/16) and the trip was horrible. this country is very very 3rd world. the 2 hr roadtrip to the hotel was so scary they roads are very bad. the resort is not your everyday dream resort. we have no kids so this resort is not the best choose for couples. it was run down and old looking for it to be a new resort, the outer perimeter is scary. the staff was polite but they stare. the housekeeper came by ONCE in 4 day to clean the room and to re-stock the frige. we had to ask for clean towals 4x before they were brung and when they did come they were the ones for the beach. the "suite" if that is what you call it was big but yet it smelled like bug stray. only one ac and that was in the bedroom it got really cold. the refrigarater menu sucked. the food was good but not a lot to choose from everything was either curry or jerk chicken, pork or beef. the acholic beverges were watered down and no really good daily activity and no night life. the very best part of the trip was going home. If your are wanting to have a really really good vaction do not choose FDR.

t want to go home!

A diamond in the rough

This is a great place for families that want to bring their kids but also want an adult vacation. I have to say that if it weren't for the nanny service and the kiddie programs, I would have rated this hotel a 2 star, rather than a four. Do not come here with high expectations of glorious suites, with impeccable decor. Nor with the impression that you will be served amazing food, with many different choices each night as it was good food, but just not that many options. The food appeared to be reincarnated with different sauces each night. The kids grille, became just plain boring after the second day. I do have to admit the jerk chicken from the kids grille, is probably the best menu item at the resort.

What you will get is a nice relaxing atmosphere with a break from the usual chaos of caring for a family. I could not imagine a more perfect place to achieve this type of tranquility, especially with a family of very small children. It might appear lackluster at first, but as you begin your vacation you realize that the coziness of the resort is what gives you a sense of freedom from the kids but also the ability to keep a close eye on them. It is a home grown resort, similiar to that of feeling welcome in a grandmother's home. Our nanny needed a little push when it came to keeping our kids occupied, but all in all she was responsible and we felt comfortable leaving our children with her for a few hours at a time. My one complaint about the nanny service is that when they were all around the pool it sometimes apppeared that the nannies were more interested in chatting with one another than keeing a strong eye on the swimming children. I did make sure to remind my nanny that it was imperative that she closley watch the children in the pool b/c they were so young.

All in all, I would say that this resort is perfect for families with kids ages 4-12. It wasn't the food, it wasn't the room and it wasn't the adult activities that made the FDR a great vacation, it was the tranquility of the ocean, the Jamaican welcomeness, the attention to your needs and the feeling that your children were well cared for that made this place a vacation worthwhile of high recommendation!

Don't use skycaps at MoBay There are skycaps at MoBay airport who insist on taking your bags but merely wheel them through the door and a bring you about 50 feet from where you started then insist on a bigger tip than whatever you offer. Carry your own bags.

Use your nanny Ask for Tameka or Desiree (or better yet take both). Read the rest of my review for additional details.
