I think the person who gave a bad review must have stayed in a different hotel....The food was excellent also the service. The staff were wonderful and they made our stay fantastic. We are going back in december 2008 to get married. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to everyone.

We stayed at this resort a few years ago -- absolutely by far the worst place in the world. Started with check-in and went down hill from there. More rude, obnoxious people I've never met, especially in the service industry. Food wasn't even good -- who ever heard of hot pink hotdogs? Service was so horrible, it was about non-existant. We were there for 10 long days -- it was the worst experience of my life -- will NEVER even think of going here again. Would highly recommend you save your money, don't stay at this place.

Just returned from a wonderful week at the sunset Jamaica Grande, Jan. 2-9, 2006. What a nice resort. The pools are the best compared to other resorts we have stayed at. Great value for your money. The buffet food was above average. The location is the best; the town of Ocho Rios is right outside the gates!! Do not hesitate to stay at this resort.........

Changed but not for the better

This is the second time at this hotel and it has changed. the food is not as good and some of the restaurants are now not open lunchtimes as they used to be.
The entertainment is ok but could do with improvement especially for teenagers.

Fun in the Sun

from sballmom
We just returned from week stay at SJG. Weather was great. Hot and sunny every day. The pools were beautiful and very clean. The rooms were newly renovated and also very clean. All the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Food was decent. Nothing great. Particularly liked the Italian restaurant. Not much for kids to do other than swim. No kids club operating. Night life was ok. House band. Disco rocks until 3:00 a.m. Beach party on Tuesday night was fun. Steel drums played. Highly recommend Dunns River boat tour. Cool Runnings. Sail, snorkel, walk the falls and great ride back. It doesn't appear the construction will be done this year. We only saw a few people working the entire week and it is at a very slow pace.

Overall we had alot of fun.

Appalling Management

from steveboroUK
Appaling reception, slow and highly incompetent, building work is very annoying. Can't see them finishing the work untill 2006, but can't see the management getting any better, ever.

has lost it grande

from Havanah
My family and I were regular visitors when the hotel was owned by the Renaissance/Marriott. We visited the hotel in July and were disappointed with a number of aspects. If you are a repeat visitor, things have changed!

There is no 24 hours cafe service; hardly any traditional meals; the staff have changed and replaced by young inexperienced employees; reception is a nightmare and guest services even worse! The friendly, homely atmosphere has gone. The South sidde of the hotel in under construction and closed. The rooms on the north side have been given a lick of paint but no clock, or tea/coffee facilities. The lifts are still as bad as ever. There is only one entrance to the hotel now (via the main lobby). The entertainment is extremely poor.

On a positive - the lobby area has been refurbished and looks good. The swimming pools are good and the Ginger Lilly (formerly Dragons) is nice.

Hopefully over time the Grande will improve, especially in the areas that matter most - front desk and guest services. Not looking to visit this hotel again. Will try Boscobel Beaches.

I Loved It!!!!

from lawdiva98
I stayed from July 17-21 2005. I read the recent reviews and was prepared for the worst. Much to my suprise, this resort was very nice. I don't see what all the bad reviews were about.

The staff was very courteous and always willing to help. They were trained well and very professional. Check-in moved smoothly. The main lobby was open and 4 out of the 5 restaurants were open. The only thing that I could see that was not open was the casino, part of the North tower, and the entertainment complex. I would say that most of the hotel and everything I need was fully operating. The resort was very clean and I could tell that it had been recently renovated. Most things smelled new.

I had a nice oceanview with no construction. The construction was going on mainly on the north side of the resort. The construction was not that noisy. I mainly tuned it out. They did work all day, but it was not intrusive.

The best meal I had was at the Ginger Lily. It's Asian style and superb food and service. The Law Diva Italian Restaurant was decent, the food took a little longer to come out. I did not like the South Pointe Beach Grill. They were understaffed and very slow. My steak was overcooked and the portions were very small. The Palm Beach Buffet was just ok. I ate breakfast there everyday which is generally the same thing daily, once for lunch and once for dinner. I mainly ate lunch at the grill by the beach. They served hamburgers, hot dogs, and jerk chicken. The hamburgers were mediocre. The jerk chicken was good and spicy. The desserts could have been better. They really need an ice cream/sundae station. Night entertaiment consisted of a band, Tuesday Beach party, and a guest/staff talent show. I didn't go to the disco because I rather sit on my balcony at night and stare at the mountains and beach. I went mainly for relaxation and I got just that. I did a city tour and horseback riding. This was my 4th visit to Ocho Rios so I've seen it all before. Overall, I enjoyed my stay and would definitely recommend this resort. I look forward to returning one day.

Not finished yet but still worth the experience!!!

The only reason I did not give this hotel an excellend rating is because yes it was still under construction. My family and I (wife and 4 year old daughter) were there from July 2nd till July 10th. The hotel property is beautiful and the food was wonderful. The only thing I really did enjoy was the varity of food from jamaican to italian to american to BBQ. I don't drink alcohol but my wife sure liked the drinks enough.
The hospitality of the staff was second to none. They made my daughter feel like the queen when they would great her by name (even the staff at the swim up bar). The concierge desk even found us a movie theatre in town to go.
During our time there my father got married at the hotel. He and my new mother were very pleased at the way the hotel handled the wedding (flowers, food, reception, rooms, and ceremony).
The hotel is one of the few located in walking distance of town. My family and felt safe walking into town and getting around.
Now about the construction......yes it is still going on and will be for some time. But when I spoke with one of the managers about what they are planning and building it is going to awesome. Our feelings were that the construction did not take away from the resort one bit. No the casino was not open, the internet was down, and no tennis courts but it did not matter to us. During our stay the waterfall was completed and the full salon was open (according to my sister it was worth every penny).
During hurricane Dennis we were bunked down in doors. The hotel did an outstanding job of keeping us guests informed with meetings 2 times a day and flyers. They moved the bar inside for us and had a schedule of indoor activies (dance lesson, dance contests, board games, kareoke) that lasted throughout the day and evening. In the makeshift dining area that set up a projection TV that monitered CNN and the Weather Channel for us to watch.
Oh yea, each room has a tv that gets HBO, Starz, ABC, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and a bunch of other stations.
I do ask that if you are going to this hotel or Jamaica to remember that you are in a third world country. Jamaica is not the US, Canada, or England. So little things that international phone cards and small bills are what you need.

My family and I stayed there from July 3rd thru the 8th. We found the front desk very friendly and helpful even though we finally arrived 14 hours late and at 12:30am. We were greeted by smiling staff and a tasty rum punch. We asked and were told we could even catch some food until 1:30am. We had a yummy burger and fries and had a restful night sleep. We thought the rooms were very clean and the housekeeping staff helpful. Coffee & tea was available at all hours. The activities was very limited and we were very disappointed with the activities. Our son is 27 so we did not know of the childrens things. Food is available just about anytime you want, just go looking and ask. We tried the three restaurants that were open during our visit. The Italian restaurant was very good and even met the chef on his own as we were leaving. He asked how our meal and service had been. Ours had been great. The waiter there are at your service refilling glasses with out being asked. The food was great and the presentation of the dishes was artistic. The Beach Grill was even better and we enjoyed it many time during our stay. We were lucky enough to be there when the waterfall and smaller pools opened. That was a nice surprise. The beach was very clean and the staff cleaning it each morning at about 6am, so we would have it to ourselfs during the day. the staff at the buffet area were great as well, clearing dishes as needed without being asked. The disco was a little loud for my husband and I but others enjoyed it. Our biggest disappointment in the hotel was that the casino and water sports were not available. We were glad we bought our own snorkeling equipment as we had to hire someone to take us to do this. We had hoped to Kayak and play in the ocean but the area to swim was not really deep and no life guard to be able to make use of watersports was a great disappointment. The casino was not there. Though there were some slots but not working or plugged in, another reason we had chosen this hotel. If you do go there be careful walking home from the local casino down town. Someone yelled threats at us as we walked back to our hotel in the evening, was very scary to hear they wanted to slit our throats. We continued walking and they stopped following us when we entered the hotel driveway. But none the less felt this would have been avoided if they had there slots or casino running. By the end of week Hurricane Dennis was coming and the staff were very good. They kept the food and drink coming even during the long 39 hours we were in lockdown in the other tower. Most of the employees were there since Wednesday and still smiling and seeing to our needs on Friday. The staff made this vacation and hotel bearable. We hope to go back next year when it is complete. We were very disappointed in the management for not telling us that nothing was available to do, when they advertised it as many restaurants, casino, water sports and activities. Someone should tell them that games such as scrabble and dominos is not entertainment especially when the prizes are a free drink, hello its all inclusive. I thought tee shirts and mugs or magnets would have been a better idea and more people would have wanted to do the games they also had at home. The staff gets 5 stars, the activitities a 0, the rooms a 4, the many pools a 5 star and the beach a 3.

Not a care in the word at the Jamaica Grande

from A TripAdvisor Member
Excellent service, great accomodations, wonderful locations
and memorable experiences.
Those would be the soundbites about the experience at the Jamaica Grande in Ocho Rios.
Even with the hotel undergoing renovations during the stay
the guests in our party didn't even know that anything was missing. All of the staff went out of their way to be accomodating and the accomodations themselves left nothing to be desire.
If you are looking for a place to spend your time and money
in Ochie, this is the place to go.

Absolutely Great

The Grande is a great place to stay
I had a wonderful time and my group had an awesome time too. The staff was very kind and courteous when I asked; I received when it was within their ability to do so. Most went of their way to accommodate me and my guests. I felt like staff cared that we had a good time.

The best things at the buffet we're the Jamaican dishes, oxtail, ackee and saltfish, callarloo escovitched fish. The other meals were good but nothing spectacular. The other restaurants also had good tasty choices.

The South Pointe (Tower) is in good condition but needs its finishing touches. I.e. Cable wire secured to the wall better rather than hanging a little messily. In my room the showers had new knobs one of the sinks had old ones which was hard to turn on. The rooms were clean; housekeeping may err on the side of cleaning around papers and half filled cups rather than turning away things the room occupant may want. The rooms and the place in general were quite clean. I would recommend the odd numbered rooms were possible in the South Pointe because those generally do not face the construction

The Beach was nice and clean. The beachfront is manicured and the swimming area is dredged each morning. The pools are equally clean and people were enjoying them all day long.

The bars
The bars were ok you can find Appleton, the Jamaican rum, everywhere. The regular name brands where Smirnoff, Teachers, Jim Beam, Knob Creek, Campari. Other than that it was local brands

The Spa and salon.
The spa is great I had a massage there and it was excellent

Jamaican Me Crazy
The club has everything for a good time: good beats, good drinks. The X factor is the crowd at the resort. The first few days the club was dead but going into the later days of my stay a new group of guest came through and the place was jumping. So it depends on who's there

Nighttime entertainment is lacking. If I weren't there with 50 friends and night time would get boring. The cover band was ok but it gets old. So you're on your own to find others to party with.

I have stayed in every type of hotel from youth hostels to the Waldoff Astoria and everything in between. I had a wonderful experience. I see there is still things the SJG must do to become the 5 star property that it plans to be. I would absolutely go back there and do plan to.

Great Time

from TorriT
I was at the SJG from June 21-26 and yes it was still under renovation. But I think some of the reviews exaggerated the noise. I was really down in the dumps about going there after reading the reviews, but I was really pleased after arriving. Yes, there were jack hammers in the morning, but by 10AM there is loud reggae music playing so you no longer hear the construction noise unless you try to pick it out of all the other noises (i.e. people chatting, kids laughing, bartenders cheering, and music blasting). The rooms were really humid, but hey, it is a tropical climate, what more do you expect. Jamaica is not know for its dry air and heat. Also, the water sports were not available when we left. We spoke with the manager and he apologized and offered us vouchers for some of the private owned snorkeling groups or the Cool Runnings Cruise. The food was ok...different choices for 4-5 days. Anything longer than that you probably will get repeats. But how often does your mention at home vary for 2 weeks without repeating. There is only one Jamaican-style food day which is Thursday. I would have preferred more authentic jamaican cuisine. All in all, I had a great time there with friends and family. The staff was great. We knew each other on first name basis and hugged when it was time to go. I would say this resort is for people looking to have a good time. If you seek peace and quite and tranquility then you should probably go somewhere else. Oh by the way, the manager also gave us complimentary passes to come back and stay for a couple of nights to use within the next 18 months. I will definitely be going back.

Top Local Tips for Ocho Rios

Venture outside for goodness sake! There is SO much to do in Ochie! There are loads of bars and restaurants in the area - just venture outside the resort! Buy your drinks from the supermarkets, not the tourist shops, as you'll get a much better deal!

Fun fun fun You can do as much as you would like and can afford or you can do as little as you would like.

Be prepared to be accosted constantly Safe but people are continuously trying to sell you something from Taxi rides to art to weed
