Paradise found

from LeftMinnesota
My wife and I spent the last week in February, 2003, at Couples Ocho Rios and we loved it! It was everything they advertised. The property was gorgeous, a classic older resort with a beautiful layout (it was the first Carribean all-inclusive resort, and home to many Hollywood celebrities years ago, as you'll note from the pictures in the piano bar.) We were upgraded to an ocean-front room, and left the french double doors to the balcony open all the time, to enjoy the sounds of the surf. The weather was gorgeous, 75 to 85 degrees during each 24 hour period, with a breeze coming up each day at noon. The beach, though small, was nice and the water beautiful. The pool area and bar were the center of a lot of activity, with a beach grill below the bar (great cheeseburgers and jerk chicken there, mon, courtesy of Damion and others.) The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful all over the place, from the bell captains (hey Kirk!) to the management. Throughout the property were large jacuzzis, some in the sun by the pools, others in the shade. The gardens had a number of private hammocks and hot tubs for two, very nice for private moments (the "Occupied" or "vacant" signs at the path to the hot tubs are a thoughtful touch.) The watersports were lots of fun, they even include scuba with training in the pool and a shallow (35 foot) resort dive part of the package (I loved it!) The staff for the watersports were particularly fun, instructive and patient, giving people the opportunity to enjoy snorkelling, sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing, kayaking, and more. They also had tennis courts, basketball courts, deep-sea fishing, and golf, though we didn't indulge in any of these. Excursions to Dunn Rivers Falls, the Prospect Plantation for horseback riding, and shopping in Ocho Rios were ok, but very touristy (and populated by lots of local vendors.) The sunset catamaran cruise was nice too. The private island for nude sunbathing was very nice (though it took we midwesterners a few days to summon the courage to go over there.) The isle had a number of nooks and crannies for private sunning, so that you didn't feel like you were on top of other people. The pool bar was nice, and the local rum drinks delicious, there and throughout the resort. A couple of little things, that might bother some but didn't affect our time there: the wine selection was disappointing, even at the gourmet French restaurant; the resort is undergoing regular updating, so some of the rooms were being worked on while people were there; the entertainment and dancing in the main room only ran from 9:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. (though the piano bar went till 3 a.m. according to our crooning and carousing friends); there didn't seem to be enough beach loungers, and people claimed them very early in the day with there towels, which is one of the benefits of tanning on the island (we were assured by management that more were on order); and the food was good but not great. However, the food quality was more than made up for by the ambiance and romance of the restaurants: the rooms were beautiful (especially the open-air Italian restaurant on stilts over the sea) and they each had tasteful musical entertainment, piano music in one and roving guitar-playing singers in the others. The two nights the restaurants were closed, the resort held fun buffets, Saturday night around the candle-filled pool and Wednesday night a beach buffet. Dining was a very relaxing and enjoyable experience. Finally, the people really made the place nice. The guests were pretty friendly and easy-going, and the staff was incredibly accommodating. We loved our 7 days there, it felt like home (assuming our home had tropical weather, great watersports, unlimited rum drinks and nonstop romance - well, occasionally it does!) We'd recommend Couples Ocho Rios to anyone looking for a great winter getaway.

We had signed up for the "secret rendezvous" which means you don't which of the 3 couples resorts you will be staying at until 7 days before you leave. We were assigned Couples OR and arrived on March 10. We also didn't know what type of room we would have, but we were not disapointed! We were given an ocean view room, close to the beach and all the action. We were able to look out on the Tower Isle (the au natural sunbathing island) and had wonderful views of the sunrise every morning. The room could have used a little updating (this is an older resort), but it was still very nice and we had no complaints. They were in the process of updating some of the rooms while we were there, so I would assume that eventually they will all get a facelift. The grounds are beautiful and very well maintained. There is a "jungle" area that has two, two-person hot tubs, which are very romantic. Although, the jets never worked in them, they were still nice. The beach, although somewhat small, is clean and groomed every day and is more than adequate. We never had a problem finding a lounge chair. The staff is very friendly and helpful. You only have to ask and they are more than happy to accomodate with a smile and a "no problem."If we had one complaint about the resort, it would have to be the food. We found it to be somewhat lacking. Not that we went hungry, but it just wasn't anything special. Well, except the jerk chicken at the Beach Grill. Now THAT was outstanding! The drinks were very inconsistent. Depending on who made them, sometimes they were really weak and other times they were "just right". It didn't really matter - if we got a weak one, we just asked for a shot of rum (or whatever) on the top and they were more than willing to oblige! We took the Dunn's River Falls trip, and that was a blast! We also went horseback riding, snorkeling, shopping and took the catamaran cruise. All the staff for each of the excursions were so nice and friendly.Overall, we had a wonderful trip and would not hesitate to go back to Jamaica and Couples OR. Jamaica is a beautiful island and the people are some of the nicest I've met. Even though we were there during a time of pending war, we never felt unsafe.

Couples Resort

from sunSt_Louis_MO
My husband and I returned from Couples Resort in Ocho Rios, Jamaica yesterday. We went for 4 days/3 nights. This was only our second "all inclusive" vacation. Our first trip was to the Bahamas. We have decided that all inclusive vacations are not for us and the only reason is the food. We like to pick where we want to eat and we dont like to eat the same thing for every meal. Let me just say that Couples property is beautiful (a bit older looking than some of the other properties we passed on the 2 hour bus ride from the airport) and the staff was very friendly and helpful but we were not impressed with the food at all. The food tasted to us mass produced and never very hot (not meaning spicy, but the temperature). Your selection is limited and it was the same food everyday. Our last night, we left the resort and went to Spring Garden Cafe which is a seafood restaurant. We definately recommend eating there and try the grilled lobster. It was the best lobster I think that I have ever eaten. The resort had a great selection of alcohol, but not beer. They had Red Stripe, Miller Lite and one type of non-alcoholic beer. If i were to rate my trip on a scale of 1-10, i would give it a 6.

Not Worth the Money

My husband and I went to Couples Ocho Rios on our honeymoon. The property was gorgeous and there were no children to ruin the romantic atmosphere, but we were very disappointed in other aspects of the trip. We had requested a mountainview room, and were given a room facing the jungle. Our room, compared to others in our hallway, was crappy. We had no carpeting, our furniture was old and scratched up, and there was no CD player. On the second day we were there, one of our patio chairs was stolen, and it took the front desk 4 days (and 3 separate requests from us) to get us a new one. Most of the food was awful. It was very bland, and the meat was dry. They also don't use much sugar in their desserts there. The one thing I did like, though, was the Jamaican food. Try the rice and the Jerk chicken...fabulous! The breakfast sausage was also very good. In fact, breakfast was the only good meal of the day! Even the French restaurant, Le Gourmet, was disappointing. Service, except at the bar, was extremely slow. Night life was pretty lame. They had some "entertainment", but it was just some of the wait staff singing each night. If we had known all this beforehand, we would have paid a bit more and gone to Couples Negril...I've heard it far surpasses Couples Ocho Rios.

This is the first part of three separate reviews. (ref. Paradise on the rocks)Our honeymoon consisted of 2 weeks in Jamaica (23 Jan -6 Feb 2003). The booking was for 1 week at Couples Ocho Rios and 1 week Couples Swept Away Negril. Some tips and advice for Couples Ocho Rios: If there is any way you can, take one of the villa suites. They do not face the ocean but are just amazing. Front garden porch with either a jacuzzi or plunge-pool, living room, breakfast area...Perfect for the spoilt honeymooners! If you are looking for a beautiful spacious beach and crystal clear waters...this won't be for you. Although the beach is charming, it is also very small and the water might not be what you expect to see at the Carribean. Great fresh pool though, so we would just sunbathe at the beach and jump into the pool to cool off. For any one who is into nude sunbathing, you will already know about the private island, did not visit it as it always seemed a bit too crowded but a great little extra. The food is above average but if you are from high culinary cities, you might have a hard time. We are from Belgium and were a little surprised as we had read reviews of people saying that the food was just as good if not better than in their 5* restaurants at home...No. But if you are not used to outstanding food, definitely don't let this get in your way.Service is absolutely impeccable! Barmen are great...Let them make you their special cocktails. Waiters, beach staff, reception, maintenance, guest services...Every one is super friendly, which is something you will not find to this extent at the other Couples resorts! If you are looking for a relaxed, intimate but not intrusive holiday where good vibes are everywhere...Ocho Rios will be great!

Wonderful Resort for Couples Only

from A TripAdvisor Member
For photos and a more detailed trip report visit: [----] Couples Ocho Rios is an All-Inclusive resort that leaves nothing out and they do it all with class and exceptional service. The entire staff is friendly and very accommodating making the service beyond first class. They have a beautiful resort with professionally manicured grounds and practical amenities. The entertainment staff makes sure that there is always something fun and exciting to do during the day and lines up authentic Jamaican talent to perform in the evening. Water sports and off site adventures are available everyday throughout the week. The nude sun bathing facilities are on Couples own private island which provides a very comfortable setting free of gawkers. The food prepared at all of the restaurants is very good. In general the variety of food offered should be broad enough to please most anyone. The rooms are nicely appointed and the water pressure/temperature really didnt vary as greatly as we had heard was common for Jamaican resorts. The wedding services couldnt have been made any easier or more memorable. The weather was beautiful. It only rained 20 minutes during our entire trip and Hurricane Georges was only 90 miles away. We have every intention of going back!

What a wonderful vacation!!

We had the time of our lives. From being welcomed with champagne to the wonderful relaxing jacuzzis, the service, wow.

We had a gorgeous room and kept the doors open all the time. We were in the South wing, so our room overlooked a deserted resort next door with wonderful ocean views. It was very private.

The restaurants were all fun, especially the pasta place and the French restaurant (flaming coffee is fab!). The bars were great, service was good. We actually loved the Beach grill with the jerk chicken- YUM.

We did lots of the activities- the catamaran cruise- sat in the front & saw flying fish, it was like a roller coaster ride! We also went scuba diving twice (our first time), snorkeling, hobie cat. Dunn's River Falls is a blast! We did that in the rain.

Lots of things to do and lots of time for relaxing in the sun. Never rushed, never worried, and so well taken care of it was hard to start thinking for myself again when we got back home.

I want to go back!!!

Heaven on Earth

Perfection. The best word to describe Couples Ocho Rios. The grounds were extremely well maintained, the staff was very friendly, the food was outstanding, and the beach was everything that we could have ever wanted. My only complaint is that the rooms could use a little renovation. The resort celebrated their 25th year in operation this month, and it's easy to see why they have been popular for so many couples over the years. The atmosphere is laid back, the activities are plentiful, and of course there's no problem mon! Tower Isle is a great spot to get in some tan-line-free sunbathing. We talked with many people at the resort, for some it was their first visit (like ours) and for others, it was part of their 20 year tradition of spending a week at Couples Ocho Rios. My wife and I will definately be going back. Great value for your vacation dollar.

Much worse than expected

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at Couples in December 2001--resort definitely turned out to be below what we've expected. Grounds are very old--there are cracks on the walls, paint is chipping off, rooms are old (a lot of things malfunctioning)--definitely needs restauration. There were ants all over the room--I understand this is tropics, but I've extensively traveled to tropics before and never faced this problem to such extent! Staff moderatly friendly/not always helpful. Food was absolutely GREAT--the best we've ever had on vacation. Seaside restaurant (forgot the name now) is great and sooooo romantic! Worst thing--it was a little windy and I guess waters were a little rought (nothing too extraordinary) so we did not get to enjoy ANY water sports/activities. Only after about 10 couples complained they took us on a catamaran cruise which was a lot of fun! Overall entertainment/activity staff at resort is non-existant--huuuuge minus in my oppinion! Never had any sports (beach volleyball, etc) during the day!!!! All-inclusive side trips were great--definitely don't miss Dunn's river falls, horseback riding, etc. Definite advantage--no kids on property--was our first experience at couples-only and it was great. We've met couples from all over the world there who were a lot of fun--we've made some great friends! Overall the fact that you are with your loved one makes it all OK but this is definitely not the place I'll go back to!

Top Local Tips for Ocho Rios

Save your money! Don't get tempted into buying items from venders that visit the hotel (other than crafts guy). Save your money for the shopping excursion where you can really wheel and deal.

Don't bother with the Dunn River Falls trip Unless you like being told what to do, having those things DIRECTLY contradicted when you arrive and have NO recourse (the hotel says: bring camera, sunscreen, hat, money, etc..... the guide wont let you bring ANY of it with you and you have to leave it on the bus!!!) and then having to line up boy/girl and HOLD HANDS while wearing rented shoes to walk up the falls? I don't think so. We went and sat to wait for the bus (which had mysteriously disappeared with all our stuff in it....)

Shopping trips I wouldn't waste my time on shopping trips into town...between the resort duty free shops and the airport's is all you will need and both are priced very competitive
