This hotel looks SO wonderful in the pictures but does not measure up in reality. The hotel was built in the 1970s and has seen little repair since then. The hotel is somewhat like a summercamp. It is not the worst hotel I have ever stayed at but definately not the best either. The beach is beautiful, thank goodness, because you will not want to stay in your room any longer than possible. If you do plan to stay here, bring some lightbulbs along with you - there is no overhead lighting and they use low wattage energy saving bulbs which provide you VERY little to no light.

I've visited White Sands hotel & villa twice in the past four years and I have to say that I've never felt more at home then there. The quality of this family runned hotel is that they are always and completely at the guests service. Like they say in Jamaica "no problem man" also counts for this hotel. When you arrive there as a guest ,you'll feel at home and that is the feeling you need to get .The only thing I can say about this hotel is that ,if you have been here you don't want to go anywhere else and if you should still have any questions, please contact me at 0031(0)629321127, I'll be always at your service when possible. With the best memories from a holiday like I've never had Samie Jusgen , Graafschapstraat 2/127 , 1079PE Amsterdam,The Netherlands or you can also contact me by e-mail at samiejusgen@hotmail.com.Hope you'll all visit White Sands once because i'm sure you will adore it.Greetings Samie.

Authentic Jamaica

Sun, sand, surf and relaxation. That's what White Sands was all about. I stayed eight days during Easter week, and I really enjoyed my stay. White Sands was clean, attractive, and attentive to my needs. Granted, it was not perfect, but I really enjoyed my time at White Sands. Many locals seem to hang out at this hotel for the owners have been there for many years. However, it turns out that most of the people hanging about are working at the place. Everyone was willing to help me out when I needed advice or help. Granted, it was as polished as some of the other resorts, but almost everyone staying there was happy with the place, and many guests seemed to be return visitors. I especially enjoyed it because it was closer to town than many of the other resorts, and it was close to the Catholic church. Moreover, I could see the mountains from my room, and the grounds were nicely kept. Some rooms are nicer than others, so ask to see a few when you get there. The staff is very friendly, and the beachside bar is really laid back and Jamaican. Finally, the prices were very affordable, and I felt safe and secure. I took an old jambox with me because there are no televisions, stereos, or telephones. Take care. Steven King

Our favorite spot in Negril!

Ideally located, friendly small family run establishment, we go back to White Sands time and time again. The rooms are immaculate, the staff helpful, kind and accommodating, I highly recommend White Sands. It's the best bang for the buck. We took our 6 year old daughter there for the first time this past spring break and she loved Negril and we all enjoyed ourselves at White Sands. The 2 for 1 drink specials are also fun and the bartender even made "kiddie" smoothies for our little girl.
Our driver, Patrick (provided by White Sands) picked us up at Montego Bay and drove us into Negril, and was courteous, efficient and an extremely safe driver. We so appreciated it and all White Sands had to offer.

Great Family Hotel

If you want to stay in a moderately priced hotel, check out the White Sands in Negril, Jamaica. I have visited Negril about 11 times in the last 16 years. I have stayed at at least four different properties on Negril beach. I never returned to one except for the White Sands. In the past seven years, our family of four (including 7 year-old twins) has stayed at the White Sands five times. It is a wonderful little property located about midway on the famous Negril beach. It's accomodations range from double bed rooms with small refrigerators to one bedroom apartments with full kitchens. Like many small properties in Jamaica, furnishings are simple platform beds and dressers in the smaller rooms. The one-bedroom apartments include rattan sofas and chairs as well as a dining table. There are no TV's or telephones in your room. The hotel has rooms on both sides of the road and both have their advantages. The gardenside rooms which are newer and a bit larger are close to the pool and office. The beachside rooms are older tend to be a bit smaller (except for the one-bedroom apartments) but are only steps away from the beach. All rooms have air conditioning and some also have ceiling fans. There is a beach bar with a small restaurant which serves breakfast and lunch. The staff at the White Sands are some of the best we have encountered in our world travels. From the managment on down, they work hard to ensure your needs are met. We were extremely fortunate in February 2003 to be staying at the White Sands when the management hosted a cocktail party for all the guests. The Jamaican food was absolutely delicious (cooked by White Sands staff!). It was a great chance to chat with the hotel management as well as all the other guests. I cannot say enough about the staff as they truly do everything in their power to make sure you have a wonderful stay. From manager Francis Williams to Netta, the office manager; to Tony, the bartender; to Peaches, our favorite housekeeper, we love each and everyone on their staff. As far as things I don't like, I'd have to admit that the pillows aren't the greatest and they could use new bath towels. And some of the rooms are showing their age. But in my mind, these are minor issues which do not sour my opinion of the White Sands. We keep returning to the White Sands for it's wonderful staff, wonderful location, and great prices. Since our first stay in 1996, we have had the opportunity to get to know many of the guests that return year after year to the White Sands. Many have told me they have stayed at the White Sands for over 15 years. Many spend 4-6 weeks at the hotel. We have become friendly with many and look forward to seeing them every year. They have watched our children grow and watch out for them as they play on the beach. So why do I give the White Sands an above average rating? Because you cannot beat the combination of price, location, and accomodation. It is a great value for your money. It is not the Westin or Hilton. If you want an American hotel, stay at one. But if you are looking for a property where you can really get to know the Jamaican people, food and customs, then I highly recommend the White Sands.

My Favorite place to stay in Negril

We've stayed on the cliffs and on the beach but once we discovered White Sands that's where we want to stay all the time. We know the staff and some of the guests by name so it's like visiting old friends each time we stay. The rooms are nice, the price is right, the two fors are good, and the staff is wonderful. The deck is a great place to catch the sunset but go early and take a chair up with you. There are bands in both directions so you get the best of the beach by being in the middle.

Most bang for the buck

We love White Sands because it's located on the very best part of Negril Beach. We've stayed in different rooms, from beach side standard (small and dark) to the garden side standard (roomy and bright) to beach side apartment which is really a lot of room if you want to do any cooking or have a lot of moving around room. The rates can't be beat, though there are no washcloths or beach towels furnished. We love walking the beach and there are plenty of beach bars and activities within walking distance, including White Sands own beach bar. The staff is warm and friendly as are the guests, many of whom are returnees. We've been there 5 times, and will be returning. It' simple, simple, simple, but cheap, cheap, cheap!

Perfect Family Getaway

This was the perfect spot for us to spend a week with our two teenage daughters. The accomodations were very clean and safe. WE loved the staff and the location was convenient to everything. The sun deck is what separates White Sands from the other spots! Don't miss the aloe massage!

Top Local Tips for Negril

Water Sports I highly recommend Peter Hill Man-Tours for water sports and also offers an island picnic excursion with motor boat shuttle and jerk chicken roast and drinks. You pay a US$7.00 to $10.00 deposit - and pay the $40 to $50 dollar balance. When you arrive in Negril, ask for him on the beach. He will find you. An honest and real nice gentlemen! And for a low priced and wholesome Jamaican breakfast or lunch, contact Angella's Restaurant at the Craft Market at the far south end of Negril Beach. If you need phone numbers, please e-mail me. Also while your there at Angella's, if you can't find Peter Hill Man, ask for an enterprising young man named Ken - he's a great contact also for water sports. If you need to know more - email me.

taxis Almost all of the hotels in Negril are located at least a mile from the actual town. Arrange taxi transportation with your hotel. As a frequent traveller to Jamaica I would not recommend using any taxis other than those recommended by the hotel. Also, many restaurants in town will send a taxi to pick you up, leaving you to only pay for the return fare. Always negotiate taxi fares in advance to avoid any surprises!

Ace Rent a car Dont worry about driving on the left. MBJ to Negril road is great. Ace Rent a car will rent for about $50 per day. And you do need a car to enjoy Negril as the distances are very large.
