Top Local Tips for Negril
Kuyaba and Margaritaville Kuyaba: it's beautiful, certainly not the 'close to the ground eating' that Frommers suggested - and it's pricey. We went there wearing jeans and tanktops and felt totally out of place, surrounded by people in evening dresses and jewelry. The food was overpriced too - we couldn't wait to finish our meals and get out of there - but it IS pretty, I'd recommend it if you are looking for a quiet romantic dinner by the ocean, surrounded by pretty white lights and beautiful rustic (but ritzy) decor. ;) Margaritaville: We went on a night that was definitely 'blasé' - the guy singing was an old guy that looked like Kenny Rogers, and the music was slow country songs. Zzzzz... The food was amazing, though pricey, but they served GENEROUS portions... The drinks were potent and yummy but cost a fortune.
Go To YS Falls We went to YS Falls because we didn't want to make the 4 hour ride to Ochos Rios to see the Dunns Rivers Falls (which I have never seen, but my friends have). YS Falls was a lot of fun and it looked to be a lot safer also (my friend said that Dunns River Falls was scary because you had to make sure you didn't fall or slip). You MUST bring bug spray though - I got eaten alive because the area is very woodsy. Also they had a pool at YS Falls and lots of grass Be sure to stop on your way back and get some fresh fish from the ladies that cook it on the side of the road near where they fish it from the water- The Red Snapper was awesome! I saw several tour buses, so it must be a poular spot (I travelled with my own private tour guides).
Lots to see and do Jamaica is a beautiful island with a variety of alternatives. I went parasailing, snorkling, swimming, jetsking and jet skiing which were lots of fun. Dunns River Falls, almost 3 hours away but it is worth the trip (get the hotel to arrange for a driver to escort you for the day). Don't want to travel for 3 hours go to the Mayfield Falls about 1 hour from Negril. The YS Falls, Black River Safari, Jamaican Rum factory were great and food was included which was terrific (this is an all day tour from 9:00 am-6:00 pm). A must see is Rick's Cafe go for the sunset, live music and cliff diving. Go to Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville for drinks, not food for at least one night. Wear lots of sunscreen and a hat to protect skin from the sun. The tropical breezes feel wonderful but the sun can burn.
