Rockhouse rocks!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just came back from a 5 day vacation at Rockhouse Hotel and it was one of my RELAXING vacations ever. I have travelled quite extensively (e.g. Caribbean, Europe, Asia) and nothing beats drinking a cocktail by the pool, hearing the waves crash into the rocks and watching the sun set. I felt myself inside a good cheesy postcard and was GLAD to be in it. The experience is almost surreal and I'm sad to be back in NYC... Moreover, the staff service is impeccable and all seem imbued with such genuine eagerness to make your stay as relaxing as possible. I would definitely recommend Rockhouse over any other hotels in Negril (although the resort formerly known as Negril Cabins by Bloody Bay seemed a cool place to stay). I do have one criticism though and if they are able to fix this, it would be one of my favorite vacation spots in this planet. My only criticism is that CLEANLINESS of the rooms could defintely and SHOULD be improved upon. Despite staying at the villa (which does not come cheap at roughly $300 per day, including tax), half of the furniture was covered in dust, which may account for the fact that it remained home to endless army of termites, and the floor was littered with bodily hair of other guests, indicating that the cleaning lady uses the same mop to wipe my and other's floor without thoroughly cleaning the mop in between. Walking in bare foot, I don't like to step on other people's pubic hair in my own villa. In addition, the bath room retained this cheap, dirty smell, the toilet bowl had this brown spots in places (ones you would see in public toilet bowls) and we lacked hot water at times. My other criticism is not that of the hotel, but the taxi/tour service they recommend. My advice - DO NOT USE Kenny Tours as it is both unfriendly and a rip off. On some tours (e.g. roundtrip taxi ride to Mayfield Falls), their rate was double what other local riders were charging. Morover, having had direct experience with Kenny, who seemed to be the owner of the tour, he did not utter a word of thanks nor make any attempt at eye contact for leaving him a $5 tip for a $60 airport to hotel ride (which, by the way, is $10 more than what others were charging). Try using Winston Taxi Service (a one-man taxi service, operated by a very pleasant and cool dude called Winston, who by the way, does not overcharge you or try to sell you ganja, which other Negril cab drivers have attemped to do) - he charges you as low as 40% of what Kenny Tours charges you and his number for those interested is 876-772-9400. Having said all this, if I were to go back to Negril or even the greater Carribean, the Rockhouse Hotel would defintely be my choice - just don't forget the insect sprays for the terimites in your rooms!!

AMAZING-RELAXING-ROMANTIC

We went for our honeymoon, September 2003, and it truly was a magical experience! The beauty, tranquility and energy allows you to relax and really just enjoy it all. You MUST stay at one of the cottages! The sunset from your bed is nothing but amazing. The hotel has a lazy and romantic feel about it. You can easily take a cab into town if you thirst for more action. The food, snorkeling, and cliff dives were more than we were expecting. We were in Jamaica for 2 weeks and went from Montego Bay, Ocho Rios to Negril. The Rockhouse was the best hotel we stayed it. The staff was great and friendly. Small enough to give you all the personal touches you desire.

Beaches or Cliffs? Loved BOTH!!

from sweptaway
Just got back from a fabulous trip to Negril Jamaica. We stayed at two hotels - one on the cliffs - the Rockhouse, which I highly recommend, and a new hotel, For Real Beach Resorts, which is right on the beach with wonderful views of the sand and water. Found the cliffs a great way to start a trip to relax, and enjoy jamaica away from the more lively area of the beaches. After a few days however, the beaches called, with live music, friendly vendors, white sand, and much more water and beach activity. Try both areas, you'll love them!

Our 10th.....

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I just returned from 4days-3nights at the "Rock House." We stayed in the hut-like cottages that overlook the clifs. It was our first time in Jamaica, and they treated us royally. Inise, handled the desk and assisted us with a smile. The whole staff was great. They answered our questions, and were very helpful people. They made us feel like every visit to the restaurant was a great experience, right down to our last "Jamaican style Breakfast." We went in late September, to find beautiful weather! There were scattered thunderstorms, but not enough or frequent enough to ruin our 10th wedding anniversary! Thanks Inise, Bro. V., Kenny of "Kennys Tours," and the whole Rock House Crew!!!

PS: If Kenny locates the camera in Garfield's bus, Please, have Inise mail it to us.

See you next time,

Monica & Kibwe Mudiwa

calm, cool and more

I just returned from my fourth stay at Rockhouse. It is the best because as a single woman, I don't want to be down on the beach with aggressive Rastas trying to maul me and sell me drugs every day. Up in the cliffs at Rockhouse, I can eat lunch by the pool, unmolested, look out on the ocean or go down for swim in the ocean. The rooms are simple and comfortable, the staff is wonderful and the restaurant has great food (can never have too many lobster enchiladas!). I stayed there seven days and never left the property.

romantic wonderland

Rock House in Negril was the most fun and romantic vacation I have ever experienced. It is small, no kids, quiet, peaceful, wonderfully romantic, and the restaurant has the most delicious food imagineable!
You can also receive massages, etc. The bar at the pool is great, the salt water pool is so refreshing. The entire time we were there, no more than 5 or 6 people were at the pool. The outdoor shower was fun, and the huts were great--having the air conditioner was a plus. All members of the staff were wonderful. Being able to dive off of the cliff next to your bungalow when you first wake up in the morning is great. I would love to go back again. While in Negril, we checked out all of the other hotels, and nothing even came close to the perfection of Rock House!

Rock House, Rugged Luxury

from Payne5
After a very stressful winter, I needed to retreat and refuel. Rock House Hotel was ideal. Leaving the airport and driving the 1 1/2 hours to Negril, I could feel my tension slipping away, lush greenery and ocean views on either side. The hotel sits on the cliffs, there is no beach, there are stairs cut out of the rocks that lead directly into the water. The infinity pool hangs over the rocks with a view of the horizon for watching sunsets. The food was amazing; grilled fish salads and mango daquiries or a Red Stripe beer. Our cottage stood alone, with caves full of crashing water underneath us. From my bed, I could open my eyes and see the ocean. The private outdoor shower in the cottage was very liberating, if a bit rugged. The mosqito net and flowers on the bed at turndown were a nice touch. My stress disappeared and romance replaced it. I will definitely go back next year.

Great Fun and Relaxing Too!

The Rockhouse was great fun. The cliff top setting is spectacular and the electric blue water is absolutely enticing. The staff was friendly and the rooms were clean. I definately recommend this place.

Excellent, fabulous, Beautiful!

Not only is it absolutely GORGEOUS there, but the staff is amazing. They did everything for me that you could imagine. MY dress strap broke, a new dress that i just bought. So i asked the front desk if they had a safety pin that I could borrow to hold my strap up. Instead, they had one of their staff sew my strap back on for me!! They did so much more than that. They are the most friendly and hospitable bunch I have ever met. The restaurant is awesome too. I loved the breakfast meals the most. I would reccommend this hotel and restaurant to everyone! I plan on staying there again sometime in my life. It is a very chill environment.

Loved the Villas @ The Rockhouse

from A TripAdvisor Member
Took a chance on the Rockhouse although there were few pictures. It was fantastic. The villas overlook the ocean on a cliff and each offers a bit of rustic privacy. Every morning and every evening you are treated to beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The provided pool is also beautiful and also overlooks the ocean. The restaurant has great food and friendly staff who are willing to improvise the menu if you ask. The only negative is not with the Rockhouse but with its location. Be prepared to stay on the property or take a long taxi ride to get to any other sites. Still, I will be back.

Top Local Tips for Negril

Rick's Cafe Go just to say you went. But don't have any expectations. Priate's Cove is a quieter and less of a tourist trap.

barter The taxi drivers will try to get way more money...so barter, it works!

Getting around We used taxis exclusively. Be sure to ask the price of the fare BEFORE you get in the taxi. Most are very reasonable and the drivers are nice and infomative.
