Historical Traveller Reviews of Negril Tree House Resort Hotel

The room was very nice, despite initial concerns based on the exterior appearance of the property. The service was always very good, rooms were very clean and comfortable. The one complaint we had was the food; it was awful! Paying $14 for 4 conch fritters that tasted like a battered & deep-fried basketball was not what I had in mind - the place next door (go left down the beach facing the ocean) has great food (the coconut shrimp, spicy Havana crab cakes and jerk chicken pasta were all excellent!) and just past that restaurant you can get a great pina colada in a fresh coconut at Georges'. I would definately recommend the hotel, and with the excellent nearby options for food, the bad restaurant on-site isn't really an issue. Don't miss 3 Dives on the cliffs if you want the really good food ;)
What a wonderful surprise

I stayed at the Negril Tree House 2 years ago, but to this day it I talk about & recommend it. It was a surprise to find such a wonderful little Gem amongst all the cookie cutter establishments available. I'll deliver my CON's list first: First of all it is by no means a Resort. Second, I too had some kind of bugs in the bed. I am a mosquito magnet so as soon as I leave home (especially for tropical climes) I'm all about the Skin so Soft the Deet the Off or whatever I have to apply, but at night I had to spray myself AND the sheets too... Never found what it was, much to my husbands annoyance since my fussing kept him up too, both of examining the sheets with the lights on. But it was a persistant problem, which I mentioned to management, who only apologized and suggested that I try some insect repellent. Also I might mention that there were ants in our room at night too. Neither of us got bit nor were we bothered in the slightest once we realized that they minded their own business. Hhhmmm thats all I can think of unless you dont like small children. I saw lots of naked babies. While we were there there were a number of families in the big villas, with a their little ones and these tots stayed naked. I thought it was funny. Hey wet bathing suits chaf! But I think some might be put off by that.
Now for the PRO's list. First we got a complimentary up grade to a beach front where we were able to see a-maz-zing sunsets. The room had gleaming terrazzo floors and a beautiful vaulted exposed-beam ceiling. Features that made the room feel clean and breezy, a bonus for such a small room. We loved the hammock chair in front of our room and spent many hours there just relaxing. There was a Neesberry tree in the grassy area between us and the beach and at dusk I watched delicate little bats (about the size of monarch butterflies) as they dipped lazily among the branches to get at pesky bugs and insects and occasionally picking at the ripe fruit. I thought it was one of the most entrancing displays I've witnessed in a long while. The tree was close enough to our veranda that I had a good front row seat, but far enough so there weren't any too-close-for-comfort moments. The stretch of beach in front of the hotel was literally steps away. There was a huge inflated trampoline anchored not far up the beach from us and we finally swam out to it and had a blast taking turns jumping on it. It made for a great place to practice some cannon bombs from too. Feet first only! The water was no more than 8 ft or so.
The staff was mostly very accommodating and even those who weren't were quite polite. Two exceptional staff members were 1. the woman at the omelette station at breakfast. She started remembering my husbands order and her friendliness opened the way for wonderful conversations and we later discovered, at the end of our trip, that we're related.
2. the femme de chambre was exceptional. She was almost always finished early and she was observant. The first day she noticed that we had folded the comforter up to fashion a sort of bolster pillow to prop up against in the headboard. Later a stack of extra pillows appeared on our bed. One day I used the bath mat from the bathroom as a bedside rug. Next day: Extra mats for the bedside. She went out of her way to make us feel at home.
This hotel is close enough to the other restaurants & hotels to walk safely even at night if you wanted a drink, a little music, some desert or a bite to eat. We saw plenty of lovers enjoying moonlight strolls along the shore like us. And there was also a constant presence of gaurds and even a policeman or two. Sandals and Beaches are nearby and are lots of fun to 'PLAY' at if you happen to know somebody staying there.
In short its a wonderful surprise and a great 'off the beaten path' type of place to sit back and relax.
A great place to stay for all ages!

After a disastrous night at another Negril lodging, we were able to get a room at Negril Tree House. We stayed four nights. The staff was tremendously accommodating to our plight, even giving us extra breakfast coupons for the morning we arrived. The hotel was well maintained, with a great mix of people from everywhere. The beach was beautiful with lots of chairs and shade for those who wanted it as well as a well-appointed pool. We had one bedroom for three of us, but it was spacious with a large, very clean bathroom. My twenty-something daughters found their way to Margaritaville, which was practically next door, and various other hot spots. I was able to read and swim in a very relaxed atmosphere. We were right next to Norma's--a great restaurant. Definitely a place we would come back to!
Tree house has great service
My husband and I stayed here 4/10-4/12. The room that we were in was room 6. It was really tiny inside, but the view for sunsets was pretty good. Rooms G-H (beach side) are the best views. The room was okay. There was some kind of small bugs crawling in the bathroom up the wall into a small hole, but it seems that they were only there at night or after we showered. There is a tub but I would suggest you take a shower if you are a clean freak like me. Plus it is not that alluring anyway. The swing hammocks were the best and the hammock on the grounds is perfect for reading, watching the sunset, or taking an afternoon nap. My husband and I both laid in it comfortably. The complimentary breakfast buffets were perfect. We were there Easter Sunday and they had a live band that was playing top 40 music old and new and you could enjoy while eating your meal. After our meal we sat in our swinging hammocks on our patio and looked at the people on the beach, in the water or just walking and playing about. It was bliss! Taxis are always there to take you about but will try to rip you off, so make sure that you set your price - don't ask them a thing. Tell them what you are willing to pay and if they don't want it - wait about 15 seconds and another taxi will put up. Or do like we did and just rent a scooter for added adventure and fun. Then you don't have to worry about being nickeled and dimed for everything you are worth. You will be asked if you want this or that, but just say no, mon and they will respect you. Oh, it does not hurt to say "respect" as well. The grounds of the tree house is always well maintained and are beautiful with various different types of flowers, trees and shrubs. One other note of honor, we left some shoes and other personal belongings behind in the room (we stayed at the cliffs for the remaining of our stay) and they sent me an e-mail at home to notify me exactly what we left and requested a shipping address to send it back to us. We were still there and discovered the items that were missing so stopped by on the way home to pick it up from them. Also, you will want to walk the beach to find dinner - cheaper this way. THE BEST JERK CHICKEN is a small pit stop right in front of Chances hotel on the beach side. It is about $5US for 1/4 chicken but it is the best that you will eat there. I could not find any better and I had it almost every day. Watch out for the sauce, it is very spicy.....typing this review made my mouth water for that jerk chicken and for the ambiance again. Great place to visit. The sun sets and there is still light out for about 20-30 mins; where will you find that?!
t Ask For Anything Better

We couldn't have asked for anything more perfect. When my boyfriend and I were planning our January vacation, we were concerned that we'd end up at one of those commercialized all-inclusive resorts. I found the Treehouse via the internet, and from that point we knew we had found something special. The Treehouse is completely non-pretensious, barebones, and gave us the freedom to explore the beautiful Seven-Mile Beach. It was great to roll out of bed and have breakfast ready just footsteps away and still have the freedom to explore the beachside restaurants for your other meals. The laid back atmosphere was wonderful. The staff was courteous and eager to please. Even when we lost our room key in the ocean they had a locksmith promptly attend to us. The only negative is that if you become hungry after 11:00 pm, you're really out of luck finding food. Most of the beachside restaurants start serving only alcohol by this time. This is the perfect resort for those who want an authentic Jamaican vacation, not an Americanized experience. We're so glad we stayed at the Treehouse.

My First time in Jamaica and my Partner's second. We had a great time at the Tree House..I highly receommend the ocean front suite, the views were great. One other bonus is the free breakfast, what a treat every day. For price you can't beat it. If you are looking for a over sized swimming pool with fountains in the middle of it, you are not going to find there. The staff at the tree house are super nice even during the spring break mahem. For what we wanted to do, which was eat, drink and sleep, the Negril Tree House is perfect.
Loved the beach and the water was so nice!!!
The good, the bad and the ugly
Visited the Negril Tree House during August 2003. The Good; We had a oceanfront room which was very nice. Great view with lot's of room and it was clean. The hammocks on the front patio are great! The staff here is very friendly and there are plenty of drivers to take you just about anywhere you like to go at a reasonable price. Enjoyed the long walks on the 7 mile beach. The Bad I could have done without the endless "peddlers". They are given free range here and not discouraged off the property like other resorts. The free breakfast was OK but it was the same thing almost every day. No cereal either. Even though we arrived after a red eye flight early in the morning there was no free breakfast on the first day. This seemed odd. The ocean in front of the property was OK but not as pristine as other lcoations in Negril. The Ugly The noise from nearby Margaritaville was very loud and annnoying all day long! Best time at this place is in the morning before the racket starts. If this is your thing however this could be a positive. Also there was a irritating airconditioner at a restaurant right next to our rooms. The pool was so old it looked like pre 1940's. I didn't go in for fear of catching some strange exotic disease. Overall if you are trying to save money and do not want any frills then this could be place for you. The best place in Negril seemed to be Couples Swept Away, the amentities and beach was perfect.
Nice, laid back.

Have been going to Negril 3 -4 times a year for the past 22 years. Was at The Tree House the first time in Nov. 2003. It is a small jewel in the star studded all inclusive surrounding resorts. Affordable, quiet, relaxing, and if you don't want a wild disco, and wild people, you will like it here. I'll be back here again this month, February, 2004. For the price, it's a good deal. Clean room, great breakfast, super staff.
Some guests expect the moon. Do like me. Get a taxi - get a day or night pass at Grand Lido, Hedonism 2, or some other resort, take a catamaran ride for two hours From Hedo for abour $40.00. Walk the beach and stop at shops, small restaurants, and be adventurous. Come back and rest at your home away from home - the Tree House. Cable TV, a fridge for your snacks and liquor stash - what more do you want at this price?

Wanted something different from AI resorts. We got it. If you are looking for something fancy, this is not the place for you. It is a bare bones facility. The restaurant/bar that is built around the mango tree is no longer serving meals with the exception of the breakfast buffet. Service during breakfast was fine as far as pouring coffee and replacing juice glasses w/full ones goes. The food was average, a couple of Jamaican dishes each morning mixed in w/the usual omlets to order, fruit/toast etc. We did not go hungry and have no complaints because we are not fussy eaters and were happy to not to have to fix our own. The beaches are small, one on the east side of the beach bar very small. Apparently, from what we have been able to determine from talking to others, there has been a signficant amount of erosion over the years. From the sound of it, the beach, at one time was beautiful.
The other beach is small but deep. There was really no place to go if you enjoy sunbathing at a distance from others of greater than 12 inches. Gets croweded. The beach bar ambiance was nice but drink prices were inconsistent even though there was a drink menu w/posted prices.
The food we ordered at the beach bar grill was not good (not to my taste) so we did not eat there a second time. No menu either. You had to ask what your choices were. I didn't care for that. The rooms/resort/pool/hottub were clean and kept clean. No problem with the timing of cleaning of our rooms and never a problem w/replacement of linens. Air conditioner worked just fine. Mattress was board hard which is great if you love that type of mattress. My back didn't, my husband's did. The pillows, however, made it difficult for both of us.
They were large, foam filled things that were very, very firm so theydid not conform to our heads. Made for some headaches and stiff necks.
Ended up making pillows out of beach towels to help w/the neck thing.
The location of this resort is good, especially if you like to walk up and down the beach. It is also very close to Margaritiville which provided quite a few meals and some beach sunbathing for us for much of the time. It was a fun place to go. Depending on when you go, there are some wild times to observe. The drinks at the beach were very small and all drinks except for beer were served in paper cups. We did not like that. We got what we were looking for in that there were many opportunities up and down the beach to meet and talk to Jamaicans but the bottom line is they are there because it's their jobs to get you to parasail, jet ski. Every individual we encountered was friendly, warm and "no problem" when we told them "no thanks". Same thing with all the hustlers. We found them to be no problem to turn down and in fact found them to be fascinating to watch up and down the beach, making their rounds. Every one has to eat or make a living so we didn't mind them.
If you stay at Treehouse and wish to do some of the activities such as jet skis or parasailing we suggest that you contact a young man named Mark. He works right between Treehouse and SeaSplash and would appreciate your patronage. He was a very personable individual and looked us up every afternoon just to chat a few minutes. We paid too much for what we got but hey, we were in Jamaica so it was all good. We will not, however, return to this resort because we di scovered we do not like dealing with having to carry cash and we do prefer the structure and nicer surroundings that you typically get w/the AI. But now we know. Our review... neither good nor bad. The previous reviews we read were pretty much accurate. This is not a fancy place but your vacation will be okay if you go there.

Great place to stay. Wonderful breakfast in the morning. Nice soft sand (you won't find that near the all inclusives). Not too many peddlers.
Great location in the middle of the 7 mile stretch of beach. Great price. Clean rooms. Very diverse group of vacationers. I will definitely stay here again. The only negative was the lack of choices in food in the evenings. Half the menu was unavailable....but isn't that how things go in JA?
Top Local Tips for Negril
Glass Bottom Boat
If you want to go for a glass bottom boat ride and snorkeling - go with Gary on the "Red Rose" He is located west of Margarettaville and is very nice, informative and a great value! You will not be sorry you chose Gary!!
You will be a target of the hustlers on the beach, hawking EVERYTHING! A simple no thanks along with saying "respect Mon" will usually end the hustle.
Many restaurants and bars offer free pickup if you call (though you have to pay for a cab for your return home). You can easily spend $10 each way, depending on where you are staying, so it adds up significantly. I wish I had rented a car despite the warnings; the roads in Negril were not that bad.
