Extremely Relaxing

from A TripAdvisor Member
I had to write because this site helped us decide our travel plans. Stayed there 3/9 -3/16/03. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway and some quiet time together, this is a great place. We had looked at Sandals & Grand Lido also but I'm glad we didn't spend the extra $1200. The Grand Lido is actually right next door on a much smaller beach. The Couples beach is about three times the size. We never had a problem getting chairs/float cushions but then again we were usually out on the beach early -- by 9 - 9:30. If you go this time of year make sure to get out there early. The weather was perfect every morning but most days would get overcast in the mid-late afternoon. We were told by one of the locals that this is normal for this time of year. Otherwise, weather was great -- high 80's and the water temp felt about 83. You can and will be happy floating in it all day long. Food was good, occassionally great and very plentiful. The baked goods/desserts were the best part and I'm not a sweet tooth. You will put on weight... the lobster night on Friday was awesome! We each had 3 or 4 tails. The drinks are very good and poured with a very heavy hand. Try the local specialty drinks! Anything you ask for is "no problem mon" An extremely friendly staff, especially Sheldon and Robert at the swim-up bar. Taleka at the front desk knew our names by the second day even though we had only seen her the day we checked in. Definitley take advantage of the included tours. Rick's at sunset is a good time and you can jump off the cliffs if you choose but be forewarned -- you may be a little sore the next day, it's about a 50 ft drop. Also do the Catamaran "booze cruise", it's a fun trip and with luck you get to see the sunset and of course do more cliff diving if you so choose, this time from the old Pickled Parrot location which is a shorter drop -- only about 35 ft. The only negatives about the place is if you're looking for a nightlife, which wasn't why we were there. They do have some bands that play in the main dining room and a piano bar that stays open as long as the last guest stays but that said, we were in bed by 10 usually after a long day in the sun ( and the requisite cocktails). We would definitely go again but next time would do it with a few other couples we know. People tend to stick to themselves and do things exclusively with each other, which is great for a little while but it would have been nice to have others to hang out with too.

Paradise found.

First trip, October 2001. Loved it - perfect beach, fabulous pool area, good food, pleasant people. Second trip, October 2002. Even better - food quality better and far more choices. The staff remembered us and were even friendlier. We have already booked for October, 2003 and bringing a third couple. Resort is large enough to have activities, but small enough to be friendly. Best beach and water in all Jamaica.

Oh My God!

The only thing negative about this place is you have to come home. From the time we got there Teleka and Franklyn treated great. Teleka even gave me our choice of three rooms. Service is fantastic, Robert , Sheldon, and Micheal at the Beach grill bar really serve you like royalty. Good stuff and lots of it fast. Andrew does know how to take care of you at dinner. The second day I swear everyone knew us by name. Maybe we gat a bit tipsy but they really took care of us. Beach was 5 stars. Camelle fixes great bloody marys and brought them to us on the beach. Food - listen we had Steak and Lobster. Rib eye - and pasta , buffet we ate all kinds of sea food scallops, shrimp oysters. There are too many good memories to talk about . Will be making our return plnas soon. Do 7 days atleast........ LOVE THIS PLACE!

In love with Couples Negril

Stayed at Couples Negril from 3/8/03 - 3/15/03. Loved, loved, loved this all inclusive. We live in Chicago, so we're used to great service and wonderful food: we weren't disappointed! The food (even buffet style) was an 8 out of 10. Great quality, wonderful variety, different themes for dinner. The reservation-only restaurant can only be eaten at every third day - it's great too! Nightly entertainment was fun, above average in quality. Never made it to the piano bar - but it stays open til the last person leaves. The beach was gorgeous, clean, soft white sand. If you want a beach chair, you have to reserve one fairly early, as they run out. Plus there is only a small number of chaise cushions which double as floaters to use in the pool/sea - they're worth grabbing early in the a.m. Make sure you get a red flag to get beach-side service - it's not real quick, but it's friendly and pleasant. Definitely visit Rick's cafe - the hotel provides free shuttle at sunset - we have beautiful pix to prove it. Also, my boyfriend jumped from the higher cliff, so if you're adventurous, go for it. Just land straight, otherwise you'll be bruised, like he was. Found the YS Falls/Black River Excursion worth the $65. Book it thru Apple vs the hotel, otherwise, you'll spend more. We found the ocean front suite well worth the $. Jacuzzi tub and rain forest shower in bathroom (nearly as big as room). Plus double balcony space with hammock, table and 2 chairs. Bring CDs to play in the CD player. Our maid was adorable! Snorkeling was a bit disappointing - free thru Resort but not much to see. Get scuba certified like my boyfriend did and you'll see lots more. ($350 add'l fee). Can do resort dive for free after instruction thru Resort at lower depths.Loved staying on Bloody Bay vs 7-mile beach - less congested with plenty of beach to walk. Can't wait to return!!! Thank you, Couples Negril.

Our vacation at Couples, Negril was everything we wished for and more! This was our first all-inclusive, couples only, adult only trip - and believe me, it is the only way to go! Our oceanview room was large, neat and comfortable. We had a terrific view of the ocean, a beautiful Koi pond and gardens. The property is very lush and well taken care of. The restaurants are nice, especially Otaheiti - the fine dining restaurant. I recommend making reservations at least two nights there. The vegetarian choices are plentiful and very tasty, and the Jerk Chicken at the Bar and Grill is a must! The swim up bar is wonderful - spent most of the vacation there or on the beach. The drinks are excellent and plentiful - they use premium brand liquor. I recommend The Miami Vice and of course - The Bob Marley! The staff at Couples is exceptional - they cater to your every need. They are extremely polite and very accommodating. I can't say enough good things about this resort. Try it out for yourself!

Going back ASAP!

My husband and I just returned from a 5day/4 night stay at Couples, Negril, and we have already been on the computer trying to plan our next trip! I cannot say enough about this vacation. It was, without a doubt, the best time we have had on a trip. I am dumbfounded with regards to the few poor reviews. The resort is beautiful! Upon arrival, your first view is through the open air lobby, over the pool and out to the gorgeous Carribean Sea. A sight that we never got used to. Just to the left of the lobby are a few porch swings...very relaxing. Be prepared for a "slow" check-in process. The staff does their best to make it a nice experience with cold towels and champagne. If your coming from a cold climant you may want to have shorts readily available! Also take this opportunity to make your reservation to eat at the Otahiette Restaurant. They only allow you to eat there once every three days if they are fully booked. You do NOT want to miss out on this dinning experience!! It was one of the best we have ever had. The reservation desk is directly accross form thr main desk. The rooms are nice and decorated with Jamaican flair. We actually preferred the garden view rooms, as the grounds are simply lush and beautiful. We also recomend ordering atleast some coffee or juice for the morning. They deliver it right to your room at your appointed time. The mornings are just increadible at Couples. The food is terrific. The Otahiette and the beach grill were the best dinners, though the buffets are good too. The staff is awesome at every level. We found the water sports guys to be especially nice.If you desire to use one of the resorts water floats, you'll have to rise early. We were unable to find an available one our entire visit. They only have enough for 1/3 of the guests, so during full capacity you may not get one. (Funny how the same people always seemed to have them!!)As for entertainment, we were not too impressed with the stuff going on at the resort. As reggae and roots-rock enthusiasts we wish they had had more authentic LIVE music. This is however a resort focused on relaxation, so this is to be expected. One night we left the resort on foot, grabbed a taxi (for just $5 US) to Alfred's and heard some great live music. There were locals and tourists alike...very fun and a change of pace form the resort . (Rick's has great music too, but the resort bus leaves as the music is starting). We loved it and will go back over and over again. Though, we will never stay for less than a is very difficult to leave!-Mike and Sharon Sullivan

Great time!

Just returned from a week at Couples, Negril. It was super. The beach is great. The water is extremely calm and clear. The all-inclusive hotel includes water sports, kayaking, snorkeling, even a shopping trip by boat to town, glass bottom boats to view the reef, and much more. Drinks were plentiful and very available. Food was a little less to our liking, since we are vegetarians, and there wasn't quite the selection that we've had in other places. However, if you eat meat and shellfish, you'd have a ball. The hotel was very well kept, beautiful grounds, towels galore, and extremely nice and pleasant staff. Enjoy!

t wait to go back!!!

as i was reading some of the reviews above, most people felt the way I do. I think the people who gave bad reviews must have stayed somewhere else! we loved it! The service, the atmosphere, the food, the weather, the people, ...I could go on and on! we got married there, and it could not have been more perfect! we are goin back in May, it can not get here to soon. I visit the web site every day! I give couples TEN stars!

Very Nice, but Service Needs Some Work

from A TripAdvisor Member
We just returned from a four night stay. The resort has a very relaxed atmosphere about it. We were very content to lay on the beautiful beach and float in the crystal clear sea. Every once in a while we would get vertical and partake in a water based activity, like water skiing or sailing. All were well run. The Rick's Cafe trip was fun and well worth the time. The cliff divers are amazing. Watch out for the "bird man", who jumps from the top of one of the trees. We enjoyed the sunset/booze cruise. There is not much to it, but it was a nice change of pace. Rasta Ralphie is a trip. You'll just have to see for yourself. The food was very good. I was a little leery about what we would get at an all inclusive. It turned out that we were impressed with the quality of almost all of our meals, whether in the formal restaurant or in the beach grill (hot dogs, grilled cheese, etc.). Breakfasts were particularly good, with made to order omelets and waffles. Our room had an ocean view and was nicely appointed. It certainly wasn't plush, but the bed was very comfortable. As stated by others, the bathroom was small, but who cares? As for service, it was quite hit-or-miss. Most of the employees are very friendly and helpful. The service at meals was particularly good, especially in the Otaheite Restaurant. The server (Rudolph), asked our names. From then on any "thank you" was greeted by a "your welcome, Ray". Very charming. On the downside, we had too many service "misses" to ignore. They didn't ruin our trip, but started to get on our nerves a little. On one day, our room was never cleaned, despite the fact that we had our "Please make up room now" card on our door handle from 8:30AM on (and yes, it was facing the right way). When I called housekeeping at 6:30PM, upon return from the Rick's Cafe trip, I informed them of the oversight (nicely) and asked if we could have some towels right away so that we could shower for dinner. None arrived. Forty minutes later, I called again and repeated the request for the room to be cleaned (we had already showered and used our wet/sandy beach towels). The room was clean when we returned from dinner. We requested a wake-up call so that we could attend Mass on Sunday morning. The wake-up call never arrived. One day at lunch I ordered an iced tea as I sat down with my food from the buffet. My drink arrived a full 25 minutes later. I know Island time and all that, but I had already finished my meal, including dessert. On many occasions we ordered drinks while at the beach from the roaming servers. They would only return with a drink for us about half the time. The red flag you place in the sand rarely attracted someone to take our order. I know it's not a big deal to walk up to the bar and get a drink, but if someone takes your drink order they should fill it. And if they advertise "red flag" service, they should provide it. Here's a little hint - when ordering a drink from the beach or pool bar, make sure you stand in front of where the bartenders are mixing drinks. If you wait at a different section of the bar, you will have a nice view of people walking up, getting their drinks, and walking away while you patiently wait to get noticed. This isn't a big deal, especially once we figured out the flow of things. Generally, the bartenders are very friendly and responsive. The just don't look around. This one is not "resort based" but company based. We booked a package online using Orbitz. The next day, I called Couples' reservations to ask that they add a "no smoking" request to my room reservation. I was told that they cannot see my reservation in their system since I did not book directly with them. I find that hard to believe, but I wasn't going to argue. I then asked how I could go about getting my "no smoking" request communicated to the resort. I was told that all the rooms at Couples Negril are non-smoking. Based on their website and the resort itself, this is simply not true. I believe I was fed a lie so that I would just go away. We don't demand or expect perfection, but consistency of service is something that a nice resort should be able to provide. Couples Negril needs to improve some in this regard. Overall, we had a great trip and a nice stay. The resort is well maintained, offers a great setting, and is a good value. It seemed that most people were enjoying themselves and liking the resort. I would recommend this resort to others, with a forewarning about the spotty service.
