I thought the resort was wonderful. The rooms were nice, clean & comfortable. The food at the restaurants and buffet was wonderful. There are lots of things to do at the resort. You can also go on excursions. There is entertainment at the resort or you can go to Margaritaville. We had a fun time there. I don't know why there are complaints. If you want 5 star accommodation, go to a 5 star resort. This resort is well worth it.

Nowhere near as luxurious as the brochure and website makes out, but nice enough. food was good, beach is small and not as lush as I expected on my first Caribbean holiday! Entertainment in the evenings was diabolical so unless u go to bed early or want to go to margeritaville in the evenings u will get bored. good thing the rooms have US sky!! Staff were very friendly and helpful, only complaint is I was with my mum and the young guys were too friendly trying to chat me up all the time, even asking my mum if I was interested! I wasnt! it was embarassing and annoying that I couldnt even eat my breakfast in peace! had a good time, but wouldn't go back.

Dirty and Terrible Food

The hotel was filthy, food was terrible, and room was very small. To get a towel for the beach you need a voucher and 50% of the towels have holes and stains on them. This is the worst resort I have ever stayed in.

We are going again this year (our 4th visit from UK) to celebrate our Ruby Wedding & retake our vows. We don't bother looking to go elsewhere now,this Hotel, it's staff and facilities are just too good to miss. It suits us perfectly.

We went on our honeymoon in 2000 and it was fantastic. hope it hasn't changed although it does look like it has had a makeover

Bad Reviews are a Joke - it was great!

We just returned from Sunset Beach and Spa in Montego Bay. Everything was amazing! I had to write a review especially after reading some before going.

The bad reviews I read about SB&spa were a joke...and obvious testiment to North Americans being spoiled. Each review I read said "bring large cups", This tip is really ridiculous. Sure the cups were smallish, but most of the world does not adhere to the Denny size portions Americans are used to. Is this how spolied we are, that this is actually an issue? God forbid we have to wait a minute extra for another drink.

The rooms were older, but who cares, they were clean, the food excellent (jamaican fare which is nice, instead of the cheeseburger and fries) and the people very courteous. This resort is great for those of you looking for something between "Club Party" and Sandals. The staff really tries to cater to everyone, there is always something going on.

Go into the English Pub and say hello to Ricardo -a great guy...tell him the Canadians say hi.

One tip I will give is bring some "OFF" in this season(expensive in gift shop) there are monsqitos at night....

Mediocre Vacation at Best

My mother and I wanted to take a Carribean trip and chose Sunset Beach. We were more disappointed in the service than anything. Very few of the staff ever smiled. It almost seemed troublesome at times for them to make a drink for you...of course you have to go to the bar to get anything-no one will come around and ask you if you want something. Food was edible but certainly not what one would expect from a nice resort. Aside from the 2 restaurants where you can only eat once during your stay, there was only a southern-style buffet and a burger joint. Rooms were old & somewhat dilapidated. If you get up early and want a coke or coffee, too bad-you have to wait until 7am to even get something to drink. All in all, it was a boring vacation and I was not impressed with Jamaican hospitality. Also, the music in the atrium was entirely too loud at night & there was really no other place to go unless you wanted to go sit on the beach in the dark. There are not enough public areas to spend your evening hours-you've got a smoky pub, a loud disco or a loud atrium and that's it. Sunset Beach will get no recommendations from me!

My husband and I honeymooned at Sunset Beach resort, Montego Bay, Jamaica in 2002. We hated it. We were stuck in a room over the disco room and had the bass vibrating into our room every night, so we were unable to sleep. There was mold and mildew everywhere. The food was blah, and to get into one of the decent resturants we had to wait three nights because they were so booked. Our first meal on the island was a hamburger because nothing else was open. We got stuck in the elevator, and the maintenence was just dispicable. I would never in a million years tell someone to vist this resort. For the money that we paid, we should have gone to Sandals.

Sunset Beach...no fun in the sun

I have just returned from six days and five nights at Sunset Beach and after three days I prayed to return home. Beach towel "rental" is an extra fifteen dollars, the food is "HORRIBLE", after two days you will not want another hotdog or hamburger. The staff was rude and the service was poor. You will only hear two Jamaican songs.."Get up,stand up" and "Red, Red Wine"(?)...during the day the drinks were weak and at night too strong...they are served in dixie cups....My advise, stay home and look out your front door.

My friend and I just returned from a 5 day stay (5/25/02-5/29/02) at the Sunset Beach Resort & Spa in Montego Bay, and I must say that we were very disappointed. The service at this hotel is mediocre. Some of the service reps. at the front desk are very snubbish and unfriendly. The food is lousy. If you want to get your "party-on" and have a great time, do not stay at this resort. I certainly would not be returning to this resort!

What a bust!!!

I just arrived back home today and I must say I am so glad. Last time I went to Jamaica I went to Negril with the superclubs resorts and next time I will go back to them, they cost a little more but their well worth it. At check in to Sunset Beach they sent us to three different rooms before they got it right. The first room was completely trashed, the second room the ceiling tiles were falling down and on the third, well lets just say we had a place to sleep and leave it at that. The entertainment wes VERY limited and the food was ???Kidneys anyone??? The chinese and Italian restaurants were very good. If it weren't for the tour of Dunns River our trip would of been a bust. Sunset beach WON"T see me again.

Sunset Beach was a delightful place to stay. Although the sunsets were not much to write home about the water was crystal clear and the accomodations were very nice. The hotel rooms could use some updating but they don't have any effect on your stay in Jamaica. The staff is helpful and courteous. Remeber Jamaicans are slow. When it came to fixing something or meeting special needs however, they were very prompt. The food was good and gave everyone a taste of Jamaica. I would reccomend Sunset Beach to anyone, Couples or families, Singles or otherwise!

My sister and I went in late August 2001 and had a wonderful time. Our parents are from Jamaica and we used to stay at this hotel back when it was called "Seawind." The renovations are amazing! We loved the pools and the beach (although it was a bit rocky) and we ate well every day. (The dessert table was very nice too...) The nightly entertainment was ok, and the on-site club had good music, but Margueritaville downtown was way more fun. I'm 23 and she's 18 and we didn't see a ton of people our age at the hotel, but there was a good mix of ages... not too many kids.
I would definitely return to Sunset Beach on any special out of Chicago. It was well worth it!

you get what you pay for

I had a wonderful time at Sunset. The beaches were very cozy. There weren't many single people, but not alot of kids either. The food was less than good, but for the price we got our trip for I didn't mind. The room was decent in our bayview. But the beds were hard. The drinks were a little weak, but hey you have all day and night to get drunk. The staff was nice, but not overly accomadating like at some of the other more expensive resorts. Overall I got what I came for, fun in the sun and plenty of rest and relaxation.

My boyfriend and I recently stayed at this resort and the only bad thing I have to say about this resort is that the pictures on the website and pamphlet do not do it any justice. I frequented this site full of reviews before our vacation only to be terrified to stay at Sunset Beach. The reviews that people wrote, criticizing this resort really scared me so I didn't tell my boyfriend about them. I thought, "this is what I get for paying so little."
I can not stress how perfect the whole vacation was. I even tried to find something to complain about and I came up dry. As soon as we came home, I started telling all my friends and family how they should go because everyone deserves a wonderful vacation like Sunset Beach Resort.
This just made me realize that there are some people that are impossible to please and I desperately hope that anyone planning to stay at this resort doesn't let the negative reviews sway their opinion. I would definately visit again.

Top Local Tips for Montego Bay

Great Website We booked our hotel with hotel-caribbean.com and saved HUNDREDS of dollars. I found the hotel I wanted, and googled "Sunset Beach best price," and got this site. Expedia.ca quotes around $340/night for this hotel. I paid $187 per night.

Taxi Arrive by taxi from airport as 6 dollars/ 5 mins away from airport, dont go on coach transters wastes around 2 hours of holiday.

Say "no" to guided tours! If you want to get out and see things bargain with the taxi drivers for a good price. If you have them take you somewhere and give them a time to pick you up you can make your own timeline. We took two guided tours, never again, and felt rushed everywhere we went. If you want to see Negril or Ocho Rios I recommend taking another trip or make a mini vacation package, staying several nights in each major area you want to tour.
