Not like it used to be
from rasrichard
My wife and I stayed here our 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th trips to Jamaica 2001 and 2002. When they closed in Sept. last year, we were totally bummed as we had reservations for a Nov trip. They reopened this year, but things there are much different. They are a family resort now. We always liked the idea of it being an adult only resort. We have nothing against kids (we have 4 of our own), but lets face it, when you are on vacation, who wants a screaming baby next door to you crying all night, or running around the dining hall, etc. We did not stay there when we went in August due to the advisment of several Jamaican friends who work in the hospitality industry in Montego Bay. Staff and management have changed also as well as the cooking and dining staff. We went there to check it out during dinner and I must say the it wasn't the same. Sorry
Excellent! Will return next year

We just return from a stay at this hotel. It was one of the best experiences we have ever had! The staff treated us like royalty. Jenna, Kurk. Janice, Nadine, Paul all the folks in food services made our stay worthwhile . Please keep up the good work and see u all next year.

My Wife and I stayed there in March of 2002.Or should I say,,, My future wife. It was perfect, it was magical, it was what we needed. I asked her to marry me on the pier at sunset. She said yes, and we have been wanting to go back there since. The food, the staff, the room...(OK, the room was plain, but oh boy was it perfect then), all of it was perfect. What happened, where is it, what is going on? We would go there in a heartbeat if we knew it was still there and the same.....Sigh.
Jack Tar - 4 Time Visitor, LOVED IT
from A TripAdvisor Member
I agree completely with "My heart is at Jack Tar". My husband and I had stayed at Jack Tar 4 times in the last 8 years and absolutely loved it.
We tried staying at other hotels in Montego Bay and were very disappointed. Absolutely nothing compares!! We too have taken friends and got them hooked on Jack Tar. All I want for Christmas is for Jack Tar Montego Bay to be waiting for me.
Penny.

Jack Tar The way To go!

My husband and I stayed at Jack Tar in May 2002 for 4 days and we loved it. The hotel was beautiful and clean, the rooms were standard but in good shape. Our balcony faced the ocean and gave us a great view. The staff was absolutely fabulous!!!!! The food was a little bit disappointing - not many selections and a bit bland but still worth the money. The resort offered many activites from volleyball to various non-motorized sports and snorkeling. They also offered jet skiing at very reasonable prices. There are no words to describe the ocean - just breath taking - calm seas - crystal blue ! Amazing! The pool was small but then again you dont go to the caribbean for the pools! Jack Tar is adults only which is great for a peaceful, romantic, fun vacation away from it all. The resort is a short walk from Margaritaville - we didnt actually make it there but heard wonderful things. I recommend this Resort to everyone out there. You get more than your moneys worth!

ADULTS ONLY, NO KIDS !!!!

I'm very happy with my stay at the hotel. Me and my sister go every year in August, and stay at the same place, Jack Tar!!! i wouldn't want to stay no where else but there. We've been there four times and loved every minute of our stay at the hotel. The staff is wonderful, from the front desk to the bell's men to the event staff, an to the cooks too. Everyone their is like our extended family. When me and my sister arrive to the hotel, they know exactly who we are with no question ask. The year 2000, we went in August and six weeks later went again. 2001 & 2002 we went in August, and we always stay 7-12 days. I truly hate to see the hotel not reopening when I go back in August this year, it's going to be really hard finding a hotel to replace Jack Tar Village. If anyone is searching for the best adult only hotel on the strip, remember this hotel!!!

just so-so

I can't rave about Jack Tar Montego Bay. Everything was just so mediocre. The beach is very small. I would have loved to walk for miles along the beach but it is about 50 metres. There is only a small section of that space that is actually swimable as the sea urchins are everywhere. The bedrooms are average and the bathrooms are old and gross. The food, however, was pretty good and there was plenty of it. The selection could have been better though as they served the same thing every day. The hotel staff and the bartenders were very friendly. The activity directors, however, were quite the opposite. I found most of them quite snotty and high on themselves. They spent most of their time huddled around each other rather than mingling with the people. the male directors would find the few select young girls to hang out with and you just knew what it was all leading to. The nightly entertainment was filled with these same young people trying to get the audience to come up and join in crude scripts and games.(I'm no prude, but it got to be a little much) All in all, an o.k. vacation, but would choose somewhere else next time.
The Best Inexpensive Place Around

I visited Jamaica for second time and brought my mother and 2 other people along. The Jack Tar is a couples only hotel with mostly ocean view rooms. The food is pretty good and the ambiance was excellent. Each day you eat in a dining room with an open ocean view. The rooms are large with two beds (similar to a holiday inn). The ocean view and beach are lovely and you're only about 10 minutes from the airport. I would recommend going in the off season (July).
Forget the tour packages if you have a party of four or more. Rent a taxi driver for the day and pay your own entry fees to places all over the island. We spent a day in ocho rios and negril. We rented the driver for several days for about 20-25 per person and went to three to four places in a day. Entry fees to sites are dirt cheap 5 to 15 american dollars. This was great compared to 30-60 dollars per excursion for four people that can add up. We saved about $150 per person on the 5 day trip. Also, instead of going on nature excursions enjoy the scenary in rides to Negril which take you into the mountains and alongside the ocean. Also,You can bargain with the tax drivers on the fair. Never pay full price for anything. I bought one of those big wicker baskets for $15 dollars, that's a big difference from the 100 dollar asking price.
My mom had the time of her life and each day was filled completely. She can't wait to go back.
