Historical Traveller Reviews of El Greco Resort Hotel

Overall, good experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
Overall, El Greco was a nice resort on a limited budget. Rooms were clean and most of the staff was very nice/helpful (except, however, the employees at the front desk - do not rely on them for a wake-up call, as they don't call on time or never call at all). The food was OK (breakfast free of charge, but don't bother paying for lunch or dinner - too overpriced for the quality of food).

I've been going to Mobay at least 3 times a year for the past three years and I must say... it has been an experience. I stayed in El Greco one time and I thought the view from the pool was awesome as well as the view from the footbridge to the elevator. The room was pretty good for the price but if you are looking to be catered to... try an all inclusive resort. For people traveling to Mobay its best to convert all your American money to Jamaican or you will be BROKE. They love for you to pay in U.S. currency because its almost twice as much in Jamaican. Furthermore, the locals look for foreigners with foreign currency. Not just white people!!!! The best restaurants are downtown and even though the walk isn't far, its all uphill on the way back. If you are adventurous... I mean NEW YORK adventurous, try Smokey Joe's Cafe downtown. Its a little hole in the wall restaurant but the food is good, plentiful and cheap!

you get what you pay for

If youre looking for an inexpensive place to stay, this is your place, but youll get what you pay for. I went with my girlfriend for four days about a month ago and our room (like all of the rooms at the resort) faced the parking lot/street. there are no ocean view rooms here, only the dinning area faces the beach. The included breakfast was cold all three mornings, and there wasnt much to it. The "hipstrip" wasnt too hip either. There were only a few restaurants and bars, most of which we didnt feel safe either walking to or hanging out it. Everytime we left the property the entire trip we got hassled in one form or another by the locals. The rooms were clean, although the refrigerator didnt work very well and we had to keep things in the freezer to keep them cool. Luckily the freezer didnt work too well either or everything would have been frozen. One last bit of advice, be very careful when you go on a tour. The property staff wasn't upfront with costs etc, and even the posted written materials they had were conflicting. Be prepared to pay for any entrance fees as well as taxi style transportation fees (which were outrageous) should you take any tours. Bottom line, youre better off spending the extra money and going to one of the nicer resorts.

Awesome Vacation

from MSTEE
Just returned from Montego Bay on 4/28/04. This was my third trip to Jamaica and my second time staying at El Greco. This is a very relaxed resort with excellent services. Bellhop, housekeeping staff, check-in staff and security staff were all excellent. Since this was my second visit I was lucky enough to get the same housekeeping person. Special thanks to Selita in Section D. The resort is in a convenient location, hip strip is just an elavator ride away and you do not get all of the noise from the strip. This really felt like home away from home. Rooms were clean and comfortable. So if you're looking for a nice clean place to relax and rest, this is the place. I plan to go back to Jamaica in November and will definitely say here again.

Loved It!

I had the time of my life at El Greco. The staff were courteous and the rooms were nice and clean. For those who rate this hotel under 4 stars...Go to sandals. It is not All-Inclusive, however as guests we received free passess to Doctor's Cave Beach everyday, free breakfast (American or Jamaican...basic) which was delicious, towels to take to the beach and complementary Rum punch and/or water upon checking in and out of the hotel. It has a beautiful view of Doctor's Cave Beach as well most of Montego Bay's Hip Strip. It is about a 10 minute walk from Margaritaville in Mo Bay. There is a mini convenience store on site where snacks, etc., are available. The rooms are more like mini apartments with a dining room (bar and stools), and a front room (living room) with a color television. The kitchen area is equipped with ice trays, sink, silver ware, glass cups and plates which are washed by room service on a daily basis. The patios are nice too. If you want to make your own fun or have your own plans and excursions in mind once arriving to Jamaica, then El Greco is definitely the place to go and much more.

A Nice, Clean, Functional Place To Stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
We just got back from a 4 night stay at El Greco, which I booked primarily based on the reviews here  so I thought I would add my own. If you are looking for a safe, clean, well-kept and well-attended place to stay, look no further than El Greco. If you are looking for a place where you want to be pampered and catered to (and there is nothing wrong with that!), you should keep looking. So let s review each of these points.1) SAFE. The  hip strip on Gloucester Ave is full of people who want to get you into their markets, want to give you a taxi ride, want to sell you drugs, or want to take you on a tour of Jamaica. In short, if you re white, it s difficult to walk around without getting bugged by somebody. It was a relief to return to El Greco s grounds and always feel safe and secure, knowing that nobody was going to bother me, other than to greet me hello. The security truly is around the clock  from the elevator from Gloucester Ave to the front gate to the parking lot to the entrance to our section of rooms. Although the actual security of the room is a bit lax (the door has one simple key and doesn t self-lock behind you), we were never concerned for our safety.2) CLEAN  we had a one-bedroom which was very nice. It had a nice bedroom (although only a full size bed) and bathroom, and a comfortable kitchenette (with fridge and stove) and living room area. Off of the living room are two windowed French doors that open up onto a patio, bringing a nice cool breeze into the room. We were bummed that our patio overlooked the parking lot (most do), but still, it was nice to have the open air come in. Our only complaint about the room was that we didn t have hot water on our last day there, which made for frustrating showers. We probably could have called the front desk for a fix, but it was our last day so we didn t bother.3) WELL-KEPT/ATTENDED: The housekeeping staff did a very good job, always replacing our towels and remaking the bed (not sure if they replaced the sheets). After checking in, my spouse remarked there were no washcloths. Less than 5 minutes later, there was a knock on the door from the housekeeper, who was there with our washcloths  and we hadn t even asked for them. Speaking of the bathroom, one thing: the only thing the hotel supplies is bar soap, so bring your own shampoo! There is a small commissary on the grounds and a supermarket near Gloucester Ave as you exit the elevators. The grounds of El Greco are kept clean as well, although the breakfast area was a touch messy  although they don t seem to supply napkins with breakfast unless you request it, which may explain the problem! Additionally, the bellhop staff are extremely friendly, although they do push a little bit for you to do a tour (we didn t).Additional thoughts: as others have mentioned, breakfast is included in your room rates, and you can choose from a traditional Jamaican breakfast (ackee and codfish, I think?), two different kinds of American breakfasts, a fruit plate, or a continental breakfast. So there are plenty of choices. When you stay at El Greco you have access to Doctor s Cave Beach, which otherwise charges $5 to get in (so it s not public, which is a good thing). The front desk supplies you with passes and beach towels, and then all you have to do is take an elevator down about 14 floors, walk down a set of stairs, and cross the street. For us, that was close enough to the beach, which was really all we wanted to do on vacation, and for that reason, El Greco was a perfect, well-priced solution.External note #1: we went to a number of restaurants on Gloucester Ave, and our favorite by far was  The Native which is located by taking a left on Gloucester when you come down the stairs, and walking about 10 minutes. It s on the left. The food and service are both fantastic.External note #2: If you're looking for a taxi or some ganja, Jamaica is the best place to vacation EVER. This wasn't on our agenda, but gosh darn it, those Jamaicans really tried hard to convince us to fit it into our schedule. Oh well, nice try.

Hotel suites rated 5*

from A TripAdvisor Member
I was toatlly suprised when I reached El Greco.I know that the star rating was low so was not expecting much more than basic. The suite was very clean and the standard was exellent. I am used to going to Rui Tropical Bay which is a 5* hotel. And must say that the suite at El Greco rates higher than that of Rui Trpical. Your room is cleaned without fail every day and the accomodation is spacious, of high quality and safe.I would definately reconmend this hotel to anyone who is on a budget but used to 5* condition.Excellent! Excellent!

Loved it!

Excellent hotel asnd staff. We enjoyed the whole trip. Located just an elevator ride away from the beach and nightlife. Well worth it.

nice home away from home

from A TripAdvisor Member
Beautiful apartment, large, spacious, separate bedroom, full appliances, Large balcony, furniture very low, and uncomfortable.
Poor/no view, no sunsets visible, limited gardens, long walk to the elevator and action. Very secure many guards at elevator and stairwells. I felt like i was in prison. Too many rules for a vacation It's a nice place but not for me. I will seek other accomodations net visit.

Great, would definitely go back

from A TripAdvisor Member
We spent my wife's birthday there, February 16-20th. Had a wonderful time. The room was comfortable and homey. Quiet which I like. We walked to the beach and restaurants, The Pelican, The Pork Pit and Maugerittes'. We took several tours, Kingston, Martha Brae rafting and the Croydon Plantation. The workers are very friendly, and the Brown Stew fish was the 'bomb'. Would definitely stay there again.

Top Local Tips for Montego Bay

Doctors Cave Beach When you visit Doctor's cave beach - which you absolutely must because it is amazing - make sure that you get there early - it starts to get busy at about 10:00 - 10:30 especially if there is a cruise ship in. The nearby Margarittaville is over-rated and over-priced.

Dunns River Falls If you're looking for day excursions, Dunns River Falls is really nice. My boyfriend and I climbed the falls, had a great time, and took some nice pics. Its about 1.5 hours away from Montego Bay. Make sure you bring a disposible water camera and some water shoes (both can be purchased in any of the tourist shops).

Ritz Carlton Stay there and you won't be disappointed!!!
