Al Fresco dining in the middle of history/ The Las Atrzanas Square in the Zona Colonial is full of open air restaurants with strolling musicians and is a delightful way to end the day. For lunch try the "first tavern in the Americas" located in the middle - especially try the rum punch. After the third one I acutally saw a pirate come through the front door. (Didn't I?)

Drinking the water I've read different opinions on whether or not to drink the water from the tap. Santo Domingo is a very large city and one would THINK the water supply would be up to western standards, but it's just not risking it. Drink bottled water.

A few recommendations I would not recommending attempting to drive yourself from the airport - or anywhere for that matter. There are NO road signs and very few local street signs once you get into town. I recommend getting a good map and a good guide book or two. We used Frommers and it was COMPLETELY INCORRECT about a lot of stuff. Even with a street map we still got lost a few times walking around. Keep your eyes open - vendors are VERYpushy and panhandlers are everywhere. Hold on to your purse or bag or whatever you are carrying. Someone attempted to pull off my husband's backpack. Also - negotiate price for anything you buy - cigars, jewelry, etc.
