Top Local Tips for Santo Domingo

Get out of the tours! My wife and I didn't take any tours, but we saw lots of tourists marching away in groups. We had a lot more fun striking out on our own and seeing things from our own perspective. Plus we could avoid touristy shops and traps. The locals were great and we never felt insecure.

Plaza Cultura - National Disgrace This block containing 3 museums plus the Museum of Modern Art was not good. Badly lit ,poor exhibits, Broken air conditioning. No guides or information. Any signs were in Spanish only. Disappointing. Beware of the price cabbies try to charge. Company cabs are cheaper than a loose one cruising the streets.
