Great Vacation

from A TripAdvisor Member
We just returned from vacationing at the Sunscape Grand and were very impressed. From greeting to departure the staff made every effort to provide a welcome and enjoyable stay. The facility was large enough to afford a variety of activities but small enough that everything was convenient. Beach was wonderful, clean and provided plenty of lounges. The rooms were clean and well supplied. The dining facilities were varied and no reservations were needed. Our vacation was the last week of February and we plan to return the same time next year.

I Highly recommend Sunscape

My husband and I visited Sunscape Feb.19-26, 2003. This was our first vacation w/o our children and the first time I felt completely and totally catered to. It was one of the more affordable, all-inclusive packages we could find (Apple Vacations) and although the room was not fancy, it was clean, cool and really did suit our needs. The staff there was wonderful and strived to make us comfortable. The grounds and beach were beautiful and well taken care of also. One day while on the beach we were approached by several people from the neighboring resorts (Occidental Allegro Resort Bavaro, Barcelo Bavaro Palace) who were just dying to talk to someone who spoke English, which was not a problem at Sunscape. It seemed that most of the quests (80-90%) Were American and Canadian, so there was never a lack of people to talk to. AND very few topless sun bathers. (I saw three (only on the beach) altogether and some could have past for men! LOL)The food was very different(some alittle bland) and sometimes inconsistent. We did have good luck at The American Grill(Tex Mex) getting some decent cuts of beef. We definitely didn't go hungry, for there was always something somewhere to eat. I honestly believe that if there is a problem with people getting sick, it would probably be the combination of the heat, sun and alcohol, rather then the food. I talked to a couple who have visited punta cana 5 times, each at a different resort. They told me that Although rooms at sunscape aren't quite as nice, the food was the best by far! Be sure to take anything you may need as far as medications and toiletries. A bottle of 24 Tylenol could cost ya up to ten American bucks. So be prepared! The snorkeling on the resort was much better then on the excursion we took and much cheaper. Make sure you find out when you get there what all is included, so you don't miss out on things like a free message, horseback riding, etc.I was very impressed with the staff and their work ethic! They work very hard and make very little money. Your all-inclusive covers tips for servers but not your maid, so she/he will dance and sing if you leave them a tip. We were so impressed with our maid the we ended up tipping her close to $40 for the week and have no regrets! Would be nice if more American's were as dedicated and had as great of attitudes as these people. I wish I could have brought alot of them home with me! All in all, we really have no real complaints! Give Sunscape Punta Cana a try!

Excellent vacation

Feb 15 - 22 four of us stayed at Sunscape resort in Punta Cana. What a beautiful resort. Clean, friendly staff (they don't expect or wait for tips), great drinks, good food specially the Italian restaurant and also the one night we had an outdoor buffet dinner by the pool. There is disco and the piano lounge bar was great if you want to relax and participate in Karaoke. The drinks are amazing if I can remember them all; miami vice (excellent drink); bahama mama; poco loco; strawberry daquiri; pina colada; and of course each bartender has a specialty, no name to it but if I tell him to make me a special that would not make me bloath, they make it for you with a smile - excellent specialty drinks!!! One waiter even called the drink after him, which is funny specially when you ordered it from another bartender - it's called "Poppy Make Me Happy"!!! The other bartenders doesn't know Poppy's concoction, so you have to remember Poppy's face! It rained on Wednesday which is the day that we supposed to have dinner right on the beach, it would have been perfect and time. The bedroom is clean, regardless of whether I leave a tip or not, the maid still cleaned the room, with flowers too! We tipped her at the end of the week. We would definitely go back again to this resort, fantastic shows and Ron Gahr staff are excellent, very friendly specially one waitress that gave us her sweet smile and jokes as she cleaned our table. The beach is wonderful, soft to touch and we walked daily for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. The beach is endless, we tried walking to the Bavaro resort area and it would have taken us 1 1/2hr one way to get there so we turned back after walking for 45 minutes on the beach, it was a good excercise after eating all the good meals. My husband and our friends truly enjoyed this holiday, I would definitely go back. The day we got back in Toronto, it was snowing - we definitely wanted to go back!!!!

beautiful beach, below average service

from A TripAdvisor Member
We found Sunscape to be an average resort. Food- Good. Beaches- awesome. Cleanliness- above average. Service - POOR. When a domincan says 10 minutes- that actually means 1 hour. You must have alot of patience to get what you want. My husband and I were married here and the judge was an hour and 45 minutes late. Our room was never cleaned on our wedding night and we were out of toilet paper. At our rehearsal dinner, at THe American Grill we waited 2 hours for our food- this is no exaggeration. The last annoying thing was the beach chairs. People would lay their towels and reserve them at like 6:00 in the morning and then never even lay on them. Too petty for us and too many obnoxious drunks. If you go to punta cana, stay at the Iberostar Bavaro. Elegant, food is awesome, service unbelievabe, beaches clean and tons of chairs!!! To some it the surroundings of the Iberostar there are beautiful pink flamingos that parade around. At Sunscape, a live chicken waddles around the adult pool. You make the decision.

We had a great time at Sunscape. The staff, food, drinks, rooms, pool, beach, entertainment were excellent. The food was the best I've had thus far at an all-inclusive resort, and I'm a picky person. The rooms were very clean, the maid service was great, no complaints. I recommend leaving a small tip daily. The hotel does everything they can to keep it's guests happy. The beach was kept very clean. The nightly entertainment was great . The staff is very friendly and entertaining, they kept us busy by the pool all day long, from aqua aerobics to tequila volley ball! SPECIAL THANKS TO RIFIEAL AND CHEWKY.I was very happy with this resort and will definitly visit Sunscape again

Best vacation ever!

We stayed at Sunscape January 18-25, 2003. We had a wonderful stay and would return in a minute. The resort is beautiful, well kept and clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. The beach is wonderful, and you are not crowded in like sardines like at other resorts we have stayed - there are lots of chairs/loungers and palm trees to lay under. The resort does a good job at keeping the beach clean (seaweed floats in but the staff rakes it up and takes it away). The food is what impressed us the most. The American Grill served wings, ribs, steak, chicken, and shrimp - all were very good! And the buffet restaurant Windows was great too - lots of variety and it all tasted good. My favourite was Da Mario's - the italian restaurant, but they serve more than just italian. We had a wonderful chicken dish with garlic mashed potatos and steamed veggies, I also had shrimp primavera on another night. For dessert, the tiramisu was incredible! The guests at the resort were mostly American(65%), Canadians (30%) and the odd handful of Europeans(5%). We enjoyed this very much because everyone spoke English & it was very easy to meet people. Also, because the majority of guests are from North America, the resort tailors their menu to this type of food. The shows/entertainment at night were great to watch. One night they set up the beach for a dinner on the beach. This was wonderful - hundreds of tables with white linen table cloths and candles and a warm ocean breeze while eating dinner. Overall, it was an absolutely wonderful trip and we would go back again. Kim & Steve Tucker, Waterloo, ON Canada

Awesome Time!

We stayed at the Sunscape 2/9/03 for 4nts. And had a GREAT time. I'm a travel agent and get around to lots of other resorts & palces and I have to say the Sunscape was AWESOME. We also toured many other resorts in Punta Cana and some were so large there just wasn't that personal one on one staff to client ratio, You always felt like just another number. Here everyone treated you like family. It was very clean, they were always cleaning some thing. My friend and I went back to our room after breakfast one morning to change into our swimsuits and the maid was cleaning everything in our room from top to bottom. You have to take in to consideration it is very humid there and things are going to smell a bit damp! But that's par for the course in most resort areas that have humidity! The food was very good lots of variety on the buffet and the sit down resturants were good also we loved the American Grill and the best part was there was no reservations required like at other resorts I have been to. They always seem to have something going on around the pool and the staff tried very hard to get everyone involved. Even for children!! They sun is very hot so take caution and use lots of high SPF sunscreen and when need be find shade like in the beach bar and grill where you can order off the menu anything from cheese steaks, burgers, hotdogs, salads and pizza. The night life is so so the shows were a bit corny but we still had a few good laughs. We love JULIO our favorite GreenBay Packer Fan in the Piano & Cigar Bar, which they light the bar on fire a few times later at night. And Julio of course is always on fire and ready to greet you with a HUGE smile! The disco was also a very fun place lots of dancing. The staff at the Sunscape trys really hard to go out of there way to make your trip very special. Rod & Caren really try there best to make this resort WONDERFUL! It's as laid back as you want it to be or as busy as you want it to be. You can take the tours like the outback safari, or 4x4 or just walk the beach which is very natural, so if your looking for a very clean prestine beach I haven't seen one in DR yet! Also there is not alot of shopping just your basic t-shirts and island souvenirs. Yes some times there was the smell of sewer, but I have encountered that in many places as well, like Mexico and Cruises. The water pressure for the toilets and shower could be improved and that was just about my only complaint. I won't hesitate to send my clients to this resort and I myself will return. I'm confident they will have a wonderful time and come back smiling and ready to book a return trip to the Sunscape Punta Cana Grand. Carmin Markwardt ...

We stayed at Sunscape from 2/1-2/8/03!!!! It was fabulous!! The resort was very nice, better than I could have ever dreamed!! The people that work there are superb!! Everyone was very pleasant, and willing to do whatever they could for you to make your trip the best. I loved every minute of it...the only way it could have been any better, would have been if I could have stayed another 2 weeks or 2 months!! The GM, Rod was very nice, and seems to really have the resort in top running condition. We did have to wait a little while for our room to be ready when we arrived, but it was worth the wait. The rooms are huge, and we were on ground floor in building 5, about 10 feet from the beach. The BBQ on the beach was awesome as well. The food was very good, every restaurant was great. The disco was nice and very fun. The people that work for Sunscape were great about getting people to join in the fun on the dance floor!!! They are such great dancers as well!!! The nightly entertainment shows were great as well....I would come back to stay at Sunscape in a heart beat. Actually wish that I didn't have to leave!!!!! It was just a wonderfully fabulous time!!!!!! Thanks again for everything..............if you are considering going to Punta Cana this is the place to stay!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel that this hotel is wonderful. My family and I havve been to the D.r four times now. we have stayed at the Sunscape twice. The beach is beautiful, white sand, clean water and a nice loong strip to walk or run. the water is also an excellent temp. nice and refreshing. there is a countless amunt of things you can do during the day. You can use the beautiful huge pool, with the very nice swim up bbar, particapte in the games may it be beach volley ball, soccer, aerobics, or other games the animation team has plannedd for that day. go shopping in the very tiny shop directly beside the hotel. or just lay in the sun. The animation team is wonderful putting on excellent shows at night that gets the croowd invovled as well as planning games and activities for the day. You always get asked to play but never forced. The food is the best I have tasted while staying in the D.R they have three very god resturants, windows the buffet excellent a little different every day, the tex mex or american grill which has excellent very hot wings and the best ribs I have ever tasted. The Italian restuarant was good not my favorite but thats just a personal thing. The hotel is very clean, while we where there (Jan 2-7 2003) the hotel won the award for cleanest hotel in the Punta Cana. the room are the standard hotel room, but the maid always add a special touch may it be fressh flowers, choclate, etc. The one thing i really enjoyed this year was the casion it was free to play, and you won pretend money to by things at the auction they had and youo could win things like rum, t-shirts and hats. I really enjoyed my stay here both years and would highly reccommened it to any one, looking forward to going back next year. If you havee any questions e-mail me. Diane

Top Local Tips for Punta Cana

Room choice Ask for a room with a view or don`t go !!

Monster Truck Safari & Caribbean Festival These two adventures were soo much fun. The Monster truck was an all day event our guide was "Josalito" aka "little joe" (sorry if I spelt it wrong). You travel the country side stop at 5 different locations, beautiful! The Caribbean Festival is a big party on the boat and you get to swim in a designated area to view tropical fish at the Coral Reef then you get to go swim with sharks and stingrays!!! completely harmless, was an amazing experience.

Mosquitos Be sure to take bug repellant (WITH DEET) for the mosquitos at night. We had this and we were only bit about 3 times. Others had horrible experiences with some of the bugs. Obviously bring lots of sunscreen because it is $20 per bottle to buy it.
