Historical Traveller Reviews of Viva Wyndham Playa Dorada Hotel

Amazing vacation

from A TripAdvisor Member
We were two girls on vacation at the Viva Wyndham Playa Dorada from April 9 to April 23 2005. We usually travel once or twice a year. Let me tell you, this was one of the best resort I've ever went to and this was my 12 th vacation in the South. First, the service was very good. Our air conditionner was defectuous, but it was repared in no time. The service at the reception was efficient. There was a lot of security on the property so we felt safe all of the time.
The food was wonderfull. The a la carte restaurant were very good, but I prefered the Oriental restaurant. The mediteranean was good also and was nice because you can dine on the beach. The buffet restaurant had a good selection of food, main course, fruits, veggies, bread, desserts, etc. There was also a good variety at the beach restaurant. The service was very good at all restaurant.
We had been upgraded to a Junior Suite. It was faboulous. It was spacious, very nice and very clean. This hotel gets some points on the cleanliness aspect. Every one is working hard and the maintenance was continous.
The animation was good. They do their best to make our vacation, the one to remember. The hotel does not have dancing entertainment group. They sometimes had people from other hotels to give a show. It was fine.
Franklin, Elizabeth, Martin, Luis and Edwin were very nice.
There is a walk to the beach, but it is short and enjoyable. There is a nice seenery to the beach, there is a nice lagoon on our way to the beach.
There is a disco on the resort, the drinks are included. There is also good nightclubs nearby, the mangu disco, the hemingway, the crazy moon, the roadway's, etc.
We had gone to paradise island. It is something to see. Do not miss it. We had a better price on the beach. We paid 42$ US instead of 70$ US.
It was wonderfull and I recommand this hotel to everyone.
PS, we did not get harrassed by the orange shirts as it was mentionned on other reviews. No one of the share employees bothered our vacation. We had told one of them we were not interested before getting to the subject and it was respected. So don't worry about them.

Fantastic staff!! So-so food

from rsenior
I just stayed here with my wife and two kids along with another family (all our kids are teenagers). Before I review this resort you should know that we have done about 8 Club Meds and a handfull of others (Iberostar and Gala).

The Good: The animations staff was excellent and made our week. If not for them the week would have been a disaster (It rained every day). Franklin, Annie, Chocolate, Lois etc were great with us and the kids. The rooms were spacious and clean. All other amenities were as expected. They were great at organizing games/voleyball etc.

The Bad: All beverages were served in tiny plastic cups. The resort is not on the beach per se. You actually have to walk down a narrow path for mybe 200 yards to get to a small section of beach that "belongs" to the resort. Quite crowded. Quite a few vendors keep hassling you at the beach. I don't know where the others who reviewed this resort have eaten but the food was anything but great. It was not bad but not notable. Even the two "A la carte" restaurants were only passable but much better than the buffet. I recommend that you eat there (you will need reservations two days ahead of time) as much as possible. Food at the beach restaurant during the day was much better but less of a choice. The excursions, like at all resorts are way overpriced! They wanted $25 per head to bring us into Puerto Plata for some sight seeing and shopping. I asked them what was on the tour and then hired a cab for the day for 8 of us for $35 total!! And we saw exactly the same thing but on our schedule.

The ugly. Some of the staff kept after our 15 and 18 year old daughters. They wanted to "walk" them down the beach or take them off property to another disco. I hate that crap especially coming from their paid staff. It's enough to deal with the street vendors etc that now I have to watch our for these horny guys. Itls like having the wolf in the henhouse. I was very dissapointed that Wyndham either does not have a policy or does not enforce it.

t knock the Vacation Club!

from nutfairy
Just returned from a 2week stay at viva ( VIVA VIVA!)
Yes we are from ENGLAND! the only ones at the resort so far, thanks to the brilliant Vaction Club ( the guys in the orange t-shirts that you are warned away the tour operators........why's that do you suppose?)

we joined vacation Club last year and decided to go to the new wyndham this time around.....what a result, we got a fantastic suite, have to point out it IS only decorated better than the other suites, still the same size. Can't speak for the canadian population as they seem to be able to get ridiculously cheap flights to the dominican, unlike flights from the U.K. but by leaving it till the month before we saved £1000 on the brochure price for a family of 4 ( tell that to your tour rep!)

We have 2 girls 3 & 5, they adored it as they were adored in turn.the locals all love kids, all the staff from maids to chefs to the on site photographer were so kind to them, and i never feared for their safety.
The pool is the cleanest I have ever seen, they even wash the sun-beds! the main pool area has sort of a sloping entrance though it does get deep, watch out for the pebble-dashed bottom! The kids club (brilliant!) has a lovely little pool, even though my youngest is 3, (they take them from 4) I was still welcome to go in and let her play with her older sister. Reyna the kids club supervisor is the sweetest girl you could ever meet, she and all the animation staff work so hard the whole day through, and with so much energy and enthusiasm its astounding!!
needless to say we are returning at xmas! Vacation Club is not like timeshare we can use our weeks whenever we like!
fantastic food, and the first time we haven't had to take immodium!!
brilliant resort, brilliant staff, the best hotel in playa dorada!

Thanks for taking the time to read this review. My wife and i travel alot and this was a very intresting vacation for these reasons:
The two weeks we were at theWyndham were amazing.....the staff especially the support staff were as i said amazing....nothing was to big or two small for them to handle...the activities were plentiful with everone getting in on all of them...and if you win they give you bottles of rum.

The Hotel is great very clean in two weeks i seen one spider and 2 skeeters and a whole bunch of dragonflies...but they are harmless.

Sorry...I am 30 and my wife is 28 so you can base my comments on the age perhaps. I used the trip advisor a lot prior to going to the Dominican and I was expecting a bad vacation based on what i advice...even about this find out for yourself... the plkace is great.

The advice I will offer to you and you can take it or leave it is...if you like the sound of Merange Musice you will love this only bad thing i have to say about the hotel...and really the only bad thing...was the music was repetitive...really repetitive.

When your out looking around...never pay more then 1/2 of what the vendors are asking and stilll even then they're making money...Talking the dominican people down in price is a game...they play it better than if you think your paying too much and they wont leave you alone...walk away and trust me ...they will come after you if they are intrested in your price. Even the excursions and tours them from outside the resort...because you can talk the price down quite a is an person paid 50 USD to go scuba diving with a place in the plaza,...I paid 25 USD for the same dive through the same place because i talked him works for everything outside the resort.

Some tours are longer than other...and when they say dont drink the water they mean it..I drank some by mistake while off on a tour and now for a while I have had some liqudfied poo and am stuck takign som antibiotics for the next 10 carefull.

Never pay the taxi price from the resort...walk outside the complex and wave down a street cab....sure they pack them full but it will cast you 25 pasoes that is less than 1 $ usd to get to is the most beautiful beach in the dominican...(in my mind).

Dont be afraid to leave the wife is pregnent and she did everything I did except for drink and scuba dive...the dominican is beautiful, the people are amazing ...the women take such pride in the way they look.....but beware, the Dominican is a third world country with third world problems...but be carefull where you go and ask around.

Oh and other people were tipping the bar staff with money...what they like are any items with a canadian flag on it...key chains, hats, pens..anyhting canadian...when you think of how much you make think of the fact that most of them dont make more that 750 usd a month and that is after tips...

My name is Jim..if you have any question before you travel to peurto plata and the playa dorada me, ill send you some pictures and answer your question.

Way to go Viva Wyndham!

from A TripAdvisor Member
What can I say? Just came back from spending a week at Viva Wyndham. We were there from Mar 23-Mar 30 and we have a terrific time. I researched other hotels before choosing Viva and I read other reviews on Viva as well. We were glad we went with Viva and didn't find any of the problems other people had reported in earlier reports. The staff were extrememly helpful and we did not find any language barriers (seeing how we don't speak Spanish). The grounds and all areas of the hotel to be spotless - these people never stop working! The drinks were plentiful and definately not watered-down - just ask my husband! I recommend the grasshoppers for a nice drink. I should have listened to another reviewer's comments about taking a big cup or coffee mug with me for the drinks - we ended up buying one there to save on trips for beer.

The short walk to the beach was pleasant and short. Once you were on the beach, it was great to spend the whole day there laying around, playing in the water or eating and drinking. The vendors on the beach were easy to deal with - you either say no thanks or just pretend you are asleep - but in no way are they a nuisance. We would get a lounge chair each morning around 9am for either the pool or the beach and would place our towel on it, then return later for our spot in the sun.

The food was great. The Oriental and Meditteranean restaurants were delicious and 5-star presentation. The food at the buffet was great too. Always plenty and tasteful.

Our standard room was clean, bright and came with a hair dryer, clothes iron and ironing board, TV, phone, desk with a stool, bedside tables, dresser and closet for clothes. The air conditioner was not working the first day, but by the second day it was cool in our room. The only problem was that the air conditioner was not controlled in our room (as it was supposed to have been) and was cool all the time (or for me, cold). At nights we would sleep with the window open to warm up the room. This was not worth complaining over, we would rather have cool during the day and evening than none at all!

I would love to go there again and was really sad to be going home. I loved the service, quality and feeling like royalty. I appreciated the fact that this hotel is only 15 min from the airport, unlike some others I heard about being over an hour long. I wanted to leave you with some great pictures of what Viva really looks like rather than a brochure. I know for me, I wanted 'real' pictures before I decided. I would rate this as a 4.5 - 5 star rating hotel, not a 3.5. I think you will enjoy your time at Viva - we did!

Great Time!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Myself and my husband and two other couples returned from Viva Wyndham Playa Dorada on March 19. We all had a great time. The staff was awesome. Especially the entertainment staff. Franklin, Chocolate, Christine, Vinnie and Edwardo were the ones we hung out with most. Language seems to be a bit of a barrier but for the most part we understood each other. We partied late into the night and soaked up the sun during the day.

If you are looking for souveniers check out the huts down the beach. There are also many vendors on the beach. The same items can be found at the plaza but the you will get a better deal on the beach. Don't forget to barter.

The only thing we were a little disappointed in was the food at the al la carte restaurants. The selection was limited and not very tastey. We all enjoyed the buffet.

The pool is beautiful and if you like to boogie board on the ocean this is just the place for you. We caught some decent waves and had a lot of fun.

We had to agree about the lack of furniture in the rooms but we made due. We could have used a clock radio in the room.

We went on the Paradise Island tour which was excellent. We bought it from Felix on the beach and our tour guide was Emilio. He was very good and spoke 4 languages.

We had an excellent time and would go back in a second. My only complaint was that it didn't last longer.

First Class Treatment for 7 days

from Italgaltravels
It was atrip that will be in my mind forever. It was the first time
travelling alone, as a single woman; but I never felt alone for the
entire 7 days. The staff was so pleasant..always including me in the many daily activities such as water aerobics, bingo, salsa lessons,
snorkling, kayaking and so much more. Security on the resort was high, I felt very safe always, even while suntanning alone on the beach.

THE FOOD WAS UNBELIEVABLE! 3 restaurants on the resort to choose from...a BUFFET THAT WAS THE BEST THAT I'VE EVER EXPERIENCED including fresh foods such as fruit, breads, and such a variety! There was a different theme offered daily alongside of everyday Northamerican foods. The SERVICE WAS OUTSTANDING, with such friendly staff and such cleanliness! No one got sick at our resort but there were many problems at the Riu, which was a 5 star hotel 2 doors down. There was always clean water available at our hotel for drinking.

There was also a Mediterranean outdoor restaurant at the beach side for evening dining that was so personnal and very classy. The staff again was professional, and always well mannered. The last restaurant was an Asian restaurant with limited seating but open to all people at the resort. The Asian atmosphere was subtle but elegant, again with
outstanding food and incredible wait staff.

If you like to drink, there was such a variety of mixed drinks offered,
nothing ever "watered down". There were 3 great bars-one at pool side and another at beach front as well as one at the evening disco and
entertainment lounge.

If you are worried about gaining a few with all this incredible
food-don't! I lost 5 pounds because there is so much to do...there is even a great on site gym with nautilus and free wts to take advantage of. And ladies-take advantage of the body massage-so professional and cheap-$35-40 USD will get you a full hour of peaceful bliss!

This was also a place where couples, and families of all ages could
enjoy their time as well-again so much to do if you wanted to get
involved. This place made you feel very welcomed no matter your age, culture, physique, etc.
If you like somewhere peaceful and quiet, Viva Wyndham was also the
place to be.

All in all, it was simply heaven on earth!

lovely place

hi all

went to this resort on Feb/14/2005 for a week, before i went some of the reveiws on this place was scarey but after i arrived i don`t know why anyone would say it was bad . The food was great, the room was what i ordered junior suit ,it was clean the people was great the beach was a little walk on a nice didn`t have to stand in line for anything.maybe not a 4 star but was not far from it.The only thing i can say if people complains about this resort they should rent a jeep for only $65.00 US and go 10 mintues down the road and see how the real people live in that country, believe me you will complain .so if you are lucky enough to go down south for how ever long, don`t complain there`s a lot worst off people than we are. ENJOY what you have life is too SHORT

Viva Value top shelf !!!!

Hello M, C, and G,

It is the ambassador for Nova Scotia Volleyball/Horseshoes/Darts!!!!! We agree with every point you have made here. My wife and daughters had a terrific time and the staff were terrific but so too were all the guests. We met some great folks and really enjoyed the wonderful folks from Quebec! Can't remember everyone but Mario (Work on the Darts Mario!!) Chantel (Professional Volleyball player), Madeline (Pro dancer), Helene (Professional catamaran sailor et al were great folks and certainly added to the trip. Hi to SMU and his great serve!!!!

Only a two minute walk to beach along a spotless patio stone walkway that is framed by the 7th hole of the Playa Dorado Golf Course. Beach is fantastic and plenty of room for all. Loungers are ample, water is fantastic and amenities at the beach are so good that you never have to leave during the day. Pool is beautiful and clean. Resort is well appointed and pleasing to the eye where ever you look. Great use of wall mirrors and rock formations to give a more expansive look.

The site is extremely clean and well maintained and the food was great. Great selection and always fresh. Service all over the resort was great and Eduard, Christine and all the rest of the animation team really do try to make everyone feel part of the family. Highly recommend this resort and it is great value...... The constant improvements will take this site to new heights. Lets hope Viva keeps it a 3.5 star with 5 star value!!!

Congrats Viva!!!!

Viva! Viva! Viva!

from Bobwinnipeg
We took this vacation feeling somewhat "out on a limb", because we understood that the hotel was a work in progress...We gambled and won BIG!

The trip was also a gamble, via Skyservices (I only have two good knees). Lo and behold, there was significantly increased knee room, not exactly roomy, but civilized. Sky service attendants were efficient, polite, friendly, and professional, but they always have been. The only problem with their flights in the past was unbearable it's reasonable. I would have to say that the flight was much better than expected.

A minor point, but the only blemish on the trip started at the Peurta Plata airport. It started with tipping a porter who glommed on to my luggage at the airport (I knew better, having successfully fending these guys off in the past), tipping him 100 pesos in view of the guy handling baggage for the bus, who then wanted a 100 peso tip of his own, then at Viva, two bellmen toting our luggage to our room, and each pressing hard for their own tip (my fault for overtipping...I only had 100 peso notes). That was pretty much the last tipping extortion for the next two weeks, so I found it a humourous learning experience. Perhaps bring appropriate tipping change...US $1s if you're as cheap as me. $20 to get to the room was a little steep, but my fault...

Check in was lightning quick even with a fairly large arrival, and the room was really flawless: large, clean, attractive, with an inviting balcony, a mini fridge with pop and water, iron and ironing board, a hair dryer, and an apparantly brand new king size bed. With prices like this, why can't I just retire out here?

The hotel is under constant improvement. Blink, and you may think you're at a new hotel. Our travel rep told us that when they initially openned, it was nothing but complaints, but now nothing but positive raves! The grounds are constantly tended and are adding numerous plantings and landscaping. The lagoon is cleaned and tended daily. That's worth knowing, because that keeps the lagoon pristine and exotic, a very pleasant accompaniment on your daily stroll to the beach. It's short and lovely enough to make the walk an absolute treat.

The beach is clean, sometimes with moderate waves rolling in. Some of the activities that are very worthwhile are boogieboarding, sailing the catamaran, learning to sailboard, or just playing in the waves. The water when we were there was very warm and very clean. Beyond the rolling waves at shore, the water was also fairly clear for snorkeling, but I didn't have any luck finding any reefs, so there are likely better snorkeling spots elsewhere. I notice that Gran Ventana, a short walk down the beach has some man made walls constructed around their hotel, and they may serve to bring fish in to their shelter, and make the water calmer. It might be worth checking out the snorkeling there.

The watersports area of Viva was the one area at the resort where it was clear that crossing the employees palms with silver resulted in a much different level of service. It's a bit of a shame, but, what can you do?

In any other area of service at the hotel, the service was in the range of good to fantastic! Staff clearly was doing their level best for everyone, and I found that the same high level of enthusiastic and professional service came both with and without tipping...absolutely no difference...service and fun flowed day after day. Special kudos to Victor, Mariana, Ramone, (the night snack waiter) and the hostess in the buffet restaurant (my appologies for forgetting her name)

The food was good, especially the mahi-mahi at the Ibiza, and I liked that you can keep your own hours and snack all night if you like, because we tend to be night owls. The pizza is always good, but it would be nice if it could remain as good as it is when it is fresh, and if the older slices were removed, as the heat can make them hard as dog biscuits. Desserts are abundant and varied, including ice cream every day, delicious fresh fruit is also available in variety. Let's face it...there's a variety of everything. Breakfast includes omlettes made to order, sausage, toast, a variety of cereals, yogurt...with all that, why did I miss my side bacon?

The entertainment was ok, and served mainly to bring the hotel clients together. With the small hotel, the intimacy really does invite enhanced freindship between the guests, if that's something you seek. One event they had the first week we were there was karaoke, and to tell you the truth, as corny as it sounds, it was the best fun of all!

Insect repellent wouldn't be a bad idea to bring along. Between the two of us, we got about a half a dozen bites in the evenings, over the two weeks.

The hotel is making improvements so fast that I'm sure that I won't be able to afford the experience again. I would have happilly added another month onto the end of the holiday, but I was dragged away, kicking and screaming..."Mommy! Why do we have to go! Waaaahhh! the way, don't try to avoid the departure tax. They don't clearly explain how to pay it, but if you don't, they'll march right on to the plane to get it from you. That happened to two ladies on our plane.

p.s. you may want to bring your own beer cup if you're more than a sipper.
