We had an absolutely wonderful time last year and will be going back again. Normally, we explore a new resort or Caribbean island each winter, but we are actually returning to Puerto Plata and Sosua by the Sea this year. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, the food and drinks plentiful, varied and delicious, and the grounds and room immaculately clean. We enjoyed the quiet atmosphere at the hotel and went for walks to the neighboring resort or into town when we wanted more “action.” It's a wonderful value and a fabulous place to vacation.

Top Local Tips for Puerto Plata

arriving/departing We flew into Santiago airport which was 11/2- 2hours away from Sosua. Scenic ride but real bad road! The taxi ride cost $100.00 US.There is an airport in Puerto Plata which is only 20 minutes from Sosua.

Horseback Riding with Chiquito Chiquito trolls the beach talking up his 6-hour round trip guided horseback riding tour into the mountains of the island. It was $70US and worth every penny. Definitely a highlight. But if you haven't riden before or are not in the best shape, your thighs will be screaming the next day, so bring the ibuprofen and tiger's balm. Still worth it!

scuba dive company One of the main reasons we went to the D.R. was to scuba dive. Even though the diving isn't fabulous, the dive company in Sosua we used was. We highly recommend Northern Coast Diving in Sosua. The staff is great, very helpful. Though it's a bit of a pain to have to walk from their shop, through town to get to the beach to catch a boat. But other than that, our experience with them was great.
