My family and I had an amazing Christmas with the marien coral. Thank-you for everything.

I do have one personal request I hope you may help me with. There was an incredible banana pudding dessert we had one night during our stay, my mom loved it and has always talked about finding a recipe for it. Could you possibly send me the recipe so we can enjoy it again before we return for this years Christmas?"

excellent all inclusive except

from A TripAdvisor Member
Excellent vacation "except", all inclusive should be all inclusive. Very disappointed with the Caribbean Grill, 15.00 u.s. extra and then 25.00 u.s. extra for lobster - what they don't tell you is 25.00 u.s. per lb. and although the restaurant is above the pool bar (free any other time) you must pay for drinks while dining in this restaurant. Otherwise, excellent, first rate accomondations, buffets were unbelievable, variety, quality and amounts. Something different every meal every day. Would absolutely return. 5 star +. Staff could not do enough for you, remember to insist on mini fridge, they will say they don't have them, but keep asking the front desk till you hit on the right employee. Would highly recommend this resort.

Coral Marien - Most Excellent!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just got back from a week (Mar 29 - Apr 5, 2003)at the Coral Marien and had a great vacation, except for the weather - 3 full days of rain :( Highly unusual for them to see any rain this time of year, yet alone 3 days. Can't fault the resort though! At the risk of sounding like a broken record (based on other reviews here), here are our observations: Arrival: Upon arrival at the airport we gathered our bags and quickly passed though customs. Once outside we were met by our tour representative (Air Canada Vacations), where we were directed to the large air conditioned tour bus that would take us to the Coral Marien. The trip took about 30 minutes as we had to stop at three other hotels along the way to drop people off. Check-in: When we got to the hotel we were greeted with a cold welcome drink! We went to the front desk and checked in without any hassles at all. The front desk employees are all professional and friendly. Our bags were delivered to our room within a few minutes. Room: We stayed in building number 5, room 5104. This was a "garden view" room with a king size bed. We faced the back of the complex, so there wasn't any view to speak of; but we didn't come for the room view! The room was spacious and clean, with lots of storage (large closet, small chest of drawers, large amoir with drawers, cabinet and TV, and two night tables), air conditioning and a ceiling fan, and ceramic tile floors. Our only complaint about the room is that it was an ajoining room - the door the room next door offered ZERO sound insulation. We could hear every word spoken - not yelled - next door. We rectified the problem by running the (rather noisy) AC all night - that drowned out any noise and let us sleep! The other thing to note is that everything echoes big time in the hallways; this is common to all buildings, all floors.Grounds: The resort is absolutely beautiful! The pool is huge and shaped like a giant 3-leafed clover. The grounds are very clean and well maintained. The only cod the pool. They need more "Palapas" (giant grass-roofed umbrellas). We found that you have to get up real early (before 7am) and put your towels on the lounges to secure them for the day. That was nice - once you had your towel out everyone (for the most part) respected that and you had your spot for the day.Bars: There are a number of bars - The pool bar, which has an "indoor" area where you can get a table out of the sun. The snack bar, where you can get drinks and food all day long - it is located at the beach. The sports bar/disco, where you can play some slots, and billiards, and watch some sports - at night it is the disco. There is also a bar at the theatre that is open in the evenings during the performances. All bar staff were friendly and efficient, and of course they never measure anything, so you usually get a good drink!!! On that note, it is a good idea to bring insulated drink mugs as many others have mentioned - the sun makes short work of any ice/slush in your cup! Plus you won't have to reill as often. There is no waiter service - you must go the bar and get your own drinks, but who cares!! Food: I can only say the food here was fantastic! I am a very picky eater, and I was very happy with the food choices. The buffet (breakfast, lunch and supper) was huge and unbelievable! They have fruits, vegetables, deserts, breads, meats, fish and pasta. Each supper has a theme, and there is absolutely no shortage of things to try. The breads and baking are awesome! The snack bar (11am to 5pm / 11pm to 6am - it's the Mexican restaurant at night) offers burgers, hot dogs, chicken wings, pizza, salads, cold cuts, buns, deserts and some other hot food choices, all good! The Mexican restaurant (aka the snack bar) requires reservations (made in the lobby at Guest Services the morning you wish to go) and offers, of course, Mexican fare. I wasn't overly impressed with the food here, but it was OK. The good news is that you can always run to the buffet and grab something if you'he snack bar! There is also a "Creperie", which again requires reservations. We didn't eat there, but some people we met did and they said it was very good. The last restaurant is the Carribean Grill. This is not included in the all-inclusive package and they charge $15USD+tax and drinks. Again, we didn't eat there - I just couldn't see spending that much money when there was so much excellent "free" food available! Enertainment: There is certainly no shortage of things to do - there is a nice gym, tennis courts, badminton, basketball, mini-golf, beach volleyball, beach soccer, water polo, water volleyball, darts, ping pong, and who knows what else I am missing! The local animation team, the Chocolate Friends, are awesome! They always make sure that something is going on, and they work hard to get people involved in games, dance lessons, spanish lessons, water aroebics, etc. They are an amazing group, who are very talented and multi-lingual; they speak 5 languages fluently - spanish, english, german, french and italian!! They love to have fun!At night, they put on a show at the large theater. Each show is different and they have great costumes and professional dancers. I would highly recommend going to this each night! After the show, everyone moves over to the disco! It is a pretty small place so it gets pretty cramped.Beach: The beach is not huge, and has been mentioned many times, does not offer the white sand, or even the crystal water, that many Carribean destinations do. The water is warm, and despite the constant wind, the waves aren't huge because there is a reef that breaks the waves up. It is windy enough though to make the water murky with sand. Sadly, there is seaweed constantly washing on shore. The staff goes out early in the morning and clears it completely away, but it comes back all day.Staff: The Dominican people are all very friendly and the staff here is no exception! Everyone smiles and says "Ola" every time you see them! They work their butts offrofessional! Other: The hotel was offering exchange rates of $1 CAN = $11 pesos (RD), $1 USD = $22.50 RD. You can get a much better rate in town. All activities and tours are priced in USD, so you are better off taking American cash rather than Canadian; if you pay in CAN they will first convert to pesos at the USD rate, so you get killed. For example, $65USD = $1430 RD (65x22) = $130CAN (1430/11). Since you can get $65USD for about $100CAN in Canada, well, you can see...Because of the bad weather many tours were cancelled, but we heard lots of people who did get to go on the Outback Safari tour say that it was amazing. We took a tour into Puerto Plata and that was good. Overall I would say this is the best resort of have ever stayed at, and would recommend it in an instant!!!If anyone wants more info feel free to email me!

when can I go back

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just got back from 2 beautifull weeks at the coral marien .........it was awesome ( except for a week of rain) the food was good , the pool just wonderfull, the staff were so nice , the bahama mamas with vodka to die for . To bad the cleaning ladies couldn't get there act togheter . Don't get me wrong but seeing an other maid at 9:55 pm wanting to clean the room ( had been done that morning allready) got a little annoying . but you learn how to use that "do not disturb sign". Also I hope "Hitlon" does something about those travel club reps, the're way to pushy . But besides that everything was just awesome would recommend it to anybody young and old . The chocolate friends do a great job.......where do they find all that energy , 12 to 14 hour days and man can they move those hips!

Fantastic Resort

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just got back from Coral Marien yesterday. I want to go back! This resort was amazing. The buffet was great. A large selection. The rooms were imaculate! The only trouble was that it rained for 3 1/2 days. But when the sun came out it was hot. I went with three other friends and we had requested side by side rooms but didnt get them. One of my hats went missing from my room but I didnt make a fuss. I loved the beach even though it got alittle windy in the afternoon. The Chocolate friends were very friendly especially Gracie. She was the best. All the waiters and waitresses were very nice always refilling your drinks. My friends thought they were alittle strong. The pool was huge. I didnt get to go on many excursions but I heard the snorkeling in Sousa was awesome! It gets cool at night so take some long sleeved shirts or pants. And if it rains request for a umbrella at the front lobby. Overall I would recommend this resort to anyone. From what we seen of other resorts this one was the best!! Next time though I would like to try Punta Cana because I heard they have the white beaches but this is the place to go in Puerto Plata!!

T WAIT TO GO BACK

from A TripAdvisor Member
Amazing trip overall! The people there are very friendly always smiling and saying hi. The food at the buffet was very good every day, the people that work in the restaurant are very nice and they are always there to fill you glass with water or wine or anything else you want. The resort itself was very nice and clean, there were people out cleaning every minute of the day! Bathrooms are clean too. The Chocolate Friends are very funny and friendly! The shows at night were good and entertaining. The drinks and the bars are excellent, we didn't find that the drinks were watered down at all, many times they were even too strong. The pool was HUGE and the ocean was nice and warm. It was a bit windy down by the ocean but it was so hot alot of the times you needed the wind to cool you down a bit. The best trip we went on while there was a safari to the cascade waterfalls. A little physical demanding because you have to climb up the waterfalls but there are leaders to help you. It was beautiful and well worth the money $45 american/person for a full day including lunch and a tour. The disco was fun but small. The shopping was OK a lot of the same things everywhere but cheaper in the town than at the hotel. If you want to go to a very nice beach Sosua is recommended the beach is white sand and aqua colored water. There are also alot of shops there and ladies that will braid your hair for alot cheaper than at the hotel. There was alot to do I wish we had stayed for two weeks but we are definatly going back and I totally recommend Coral Marien to everyone!!!

This was my best Vacation ever:)

Wow........from the moment we got to the hotel. The staff was great alway ready to assist with a smile. They were great. The entertainment (chocolate friends) was fabulous and the food spectacular. I mean, never a dull moment. I mean we were 7 ladies and trust us it takes a lot to entertain 7 of us and they did a wonderful job. The cleanliness of the place is remarkable. There is always an activity to do. Our stay here was soooooo great that we are going back in the winter. I would like to thank the resort for such a wonderful stay. See you soon.Sabrina

Watch out Teens

from A TripAdvisor Member
Dont get me wrong I have a great time, I would go back there in a second but with some pepper spray because Im a Young female. There were some problems when i went there.I was 18 when me and my best friend went to this resort last April (2002). I guess I'm writing this just to let Parents and Teen girls know what to expect when your there. The "young men" who work at the resort are pervs, they would try to come on to us and we would tell them time and time again to screw off. At night time(at the disco) they would try to get us off the resort and come with them to a "so called" party. (YEAH RIGHT) They hiss at you and say gross stuff to you in their lanauge that most of us don't understand. You tell them to get lost because you have a boyfriend and they try to be cool and say smart ass lines like "your beautiful, come live with me, your boyfriends not here...bla bla.. bla.. I guess the thing that pissed me off the most is that they are the ones that work their so their there 24/7 its not like when you walk to the beach and when you have had enough you just go on the resort and they cant follow you ... My last night there I didn't go out to the Disco and party it up because I didnt feel like dealing with them..

A very nice week at Coral Marien

from A TripAdvisor Member
We just returned from a week at the Coral Marien and had a great time. Positives: The people. The Dominicans love children and were wonderful to ours. They were also warm and kind to guests of all ages. The property is also excellent; clean, well kept and expansive. We never felt crowded. We saw nice touches throughout, such as spotless public restrooms with flower bouquets and tasteful furnishings and decorations in the common areas. The room was large and spotless. The pool beautiful (and also spotless). Buffet food was average to above average with a reasonable selection. A few items were excellent (breakfast was ALWAYS good). The specialty restaurants were very good. We had one dinner at the Carribean Grill which was fantastic. The service was as good as nearly any top line restaurant. There is a charge for this restaurant, however, but we found it well worth the price -- around $100US with a bottle of wine and tip, for 2 adults and 2 children. I would highly recommend this. Another very nice feature was crepes and finger sandwiches by the pool in the afternoon. Finally, the resort is convenient to the airport -- 20 mins., as are all in Puerta Plata I believe.Negatives: The beach is OK but we did see some trash and broken glass. Not much, however. The sand is brown (not white) and the water a bit cloudy. I think this is due to wind, currents and location on the island. I participated in a "resort" scuba dive at a bay about 40 mins. away and the water was pristine. The fish and coral were marginal, however, and we saw better of both snorkeling in the Virgin Islands. The drinks were so-so, with watered down booze. I have found this to be the case at nearly all "all inclusive" hotels though and it's probably not a bad idea. "Presidente" beer was good but also weak. Wine was poor at dinner but they did have a store in which one could buy good wine at a fair price. Overall, we felt these negatives to be a minor factor in the overall trip.A few additional points: The entertainment was wonderful. The troop worked very hard to get people involved and the games by the pool and shows at night were GREAT. Joyce the "horseback riding lady" was fun to talk to and orchestrated a fantastic trip. The area around the resorts is not very pretty -- poverty, trash and unfinished construction. In summary, we would definately recommend Coral Marien to friends, with the above notes in mind. Also keep in mind that this is an "all inclusive" vacation and that a high quality "AI" will not be as luxurious as a high quality traditional hotel. But if VALUE is even a small factor in your decision, you will not be disappointed at Coral Marien.

Lovely resort

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at the Coral Marien for a week and i can tell you that it is the best vacation i ever had. The staff go out of their way to help you and everyone is so friendly. Food was great even if you're a picky eater like myself. There are 3 restaurants to pick from but the Carribean Grill isn't included in your package. The beach is nice but nothing amazing. My only complaint about this resort is: be CAREFUL when walking around the pool area it is EXTREMELY slippery and someone in our group fell and hurt themselves. If you have any questions please email me as i have more info on this beautiful resort.

The BEST resort vacation!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I absolutely loved our stay at the Coral Marien ( February 2003). We have travelled to places such as the mayan riviera, varadero, and acapulco, and we have to admit that this is our favourite resort to date. WE like to choose 4 star or better resorts - which are not too crowded, but have many facilities offered to you. Here is our review, hope it helps . HOTEL ROOM: we stayed in building #5, which overlooked the pool, facing north. The room was huge, clean, modern, and water pressure was great. NO complaints of noise, building #7 - is close to the disco though. FOOD: we ate at the main buffet and at the snack bar. we were sooo satisfied with the buffet that we did not bother to try the mexican. The buffet had many international foods, breads, pastries, salads, and fruits to enjoy. The 24 hour snack bar had a mini buffet, plus pizza, hamburg's, dogs, fries and drinks. The food was great! You can go for a late night snack at any time!!ACTIVITIES: Chocolate Friends - are fun and great. They start at 10am and go til 1130pm. Throughout the day the perform activites as; aerobics, merengue lessons, v-ball, ping-pong, water polo etc... they also do fun games with guest participation (POOLSIDE). They also perform at night at the SHOWS! Which are fun. We were in a couple contests and won several fun prizes (dominican gasoline). Lots of dancing.....So if you are an active person, there is a lot to do ..or if you like to relax, there is plenty of that too..DISCO: great music for everyone. open til 3am. drinks are free. BEACH: the beach is nice. we were hoping to do some snorkeling but the the water was too turbulent. we walked along the coastline, which is open to the public. There are several markets nearby, just a short walk on beach. In the a.m. the beach was calm, and then around noon, the wind would pick up so we would go to the poolside. There were NO dominicans trying to sell things to you at the beach. BAthrooms near beach are clean. Snack bar and drinks are few steps away. Other activities at beach - wind surfing, etc. POOL:The pool is gigantic. It was never crowded, even when activities inside the pool were going on. The pool is clean. There are many lounge chairs, enough for eveyone to enjoy. there are tree umbrellas too, for shade. there is a bar and bathrooms by pool. a walk in pool. ideal for kids, and non swimmers. They have towel service for beach and pool. MONEY: They accept canadian and american money. they also accept dominican pesos. 1 can dollar = 10 pesos. 1 us dollar = 23 pesos. This is what the currency exchange was at that time. STAFF & SERVICE: the staff is really friendly. the chocolate friends really try to get people involved in a comfortable way, and they have fun - not serious. Front desk is courteous and made sure we were happy. waiters, bartenders, and waittresses are very friendly as well. If you have kids, there are activites for them too. EXCURSIONS: shopping in pop is ok. you will find same items on beach market. unless you are looking for something specific - authentic amber. be sure to ask your travel guide about this - there is some fake items that they try to sell you. Go to Sosua - we didn't. wish we did. we heard they have great snorkeling and shopping. We heard that the four wheeler tour was not the good. I guess the equipment is old and does not function well. Paradise Island we heard was beautiful -snorkeling. several more outings to choose $$$We went with a group of people to Playa Dorado Casino. It was small. SLots were old and no fun (NO ONE WON). But they did have about 20 tables. SAFETY: we felt safe on our trip. we did not have any problems or feel unsafe when we were in pop, or on the beach. OVERALL: this is a great resort. the lay out is great. there is something for everyone, young or mature, to do. the food is the best we have ever had! the people were the friendliest. food and drinks are 24 hour! the complex is clean, well lanscaped, and beautiful. I only wish that they had bar service for the pool and beach. That was alsways a nice touch at the other resort that we stayed at. WE are definitely going back. Many other tourists said the same.

Top Local Tips for Puerto Plata

tours save money by booking through the hotel concierge - he knows the good local tours rather than the airline tour packages Hire your own taxi and guide rather than do the organized tours so you get to do only what you want. Ask for no extra stops when you do this . Every driver has his own 'favorite' shops he will take you to.

catamaran trip we took this excursion. Had a great time. The guys at the sports hut on the beach set it up for us. 60 dollars each, but well worth the money. went snorkelling , buffet lunch and lots of cold drinks. Good way to meet other people from other countries.

getting around see the head porter or the concierge if you are planning any trips, they will steer you in the right direction. I don't reccomend driving ( I tried it and would not do it again) the insurance laws are a lot different and if you had an accident it would probably end up being your fault regardless of the circumstances.
