Top Local Tips for Havana

Changing money When you change your money at the bank, try and get as low denomination notes as you can. In some places handing over a 20 cuc peso for a beer can cause them problems as they dont usually have much change in the till.

Be Careful If you are a US Citizen or don't speak Spanish they are people all over the place from prostitutes to guys who will try to scam you of your pesos and anything (just like anywhere else in the world) which are of no use after you leave. Declare your trip and travel on a tourist visa unless you are a journalist or academic. There is a $500 000 fine for non declarartion at US Customs, better to tell the truth then go to jail but do not let this deter you from going. Do not bring in contraband back in, and also buy your cigars from reputable places and smoke there, they are also scams there. Do not return them to the US. Accomodation in Havana Viejo is not good except for one location. Stay outside and visit for historical ambience and some good food. I did not find the food outside hotels so fantatstic at all. Look for private restaurants in homes. Again, be careful.
