No water and rude staff

Intended to spend 5 nights at the Ambos Mundos. We checked out on the 2nd day. There was no tap water, hot or cold, for the complete duration of our stay. We had to walk about 1/4 mile to the Parque Central hotel to use their toilet facilities in the lobby The staff were extremely rude and unhelpful. Breakfast was rubbish and I dread to think about the hygiene in the absence of Fresh water. The rooms had a damp/musky smell. The exchange rates they use are a rip off.

The hotel is a disgrace. However, as Virgin Holidays highlight, the location is ideal for the Old Town, Hemmingway loved it and the view from the roof top restaurant is great.

The hotel is grand and in good repair. The lobby is very nice, though the white leather seating could use a good scrubbing or replacement. Piano player was a nice touch. Bar is open 24 hours and the drinks are good.

There are some rooms with no windows. We stayed in a room with a street view. You could hear the sounds of the city but the great thing is there is no motorized vehicle traffic allowed in the streets around this hotel. Music plays at a couple of nearby locations during the day and evening. All music stopped by 11:30 pm every night. We did not find the noise to be really loud or overwhelming at all and there wasn't any disturbing noise in the morning to wake us, either. If you're expecting to stay in a place that is very quiet, I wouldn't advise staying anyplace in the centre of a city.

We only ate breakfast at this hotel and it was ok. We found that any food in Havana is mediocre at best and there are often shortages resulting in some items not being available on the menu. No one goes to Cuba for the food.

This is a great location for exploring old Havana and one of the nicest hotels in the area.

I found the Ambos Mundos very noisey. Some of the rooms do not have any windows. The lobby is nice, although hord's of tourist's wander through taking pictures. Not relaxing at all. Food was average. Mojito's were very good though. Piano player in Lobby drove me crazy, droping notes. I wouldn't stay there again.

This hotel has plenty of character however not all rooms have windows ! Those without are musty and damp. However those with windows are fine, although be prepared for some flooding if there is a hurricane! But that all adds to the character.

Top Local Tips for Havana

Plaza Vieja Head for the Plaza Veija area if you want a great selection of good restaurants. Everything from the beer pub to coffee shops; from spanish to the paeilla. Just take time to preview the menus. La Mena, for instance (on Obispo--next to Ambus Mundos) has a set menu that includes a drink, the main course, coffee and desert--for a reasonable price--even if you order the lobster. Avoid La Floridita at all costs. (even though it is not in this area--but is one of those 'myth' restaurants). Bad unfriendly service, very expensive and mediocre food--waste of time and money.

Don't come here for the food!! Cuba is interesting. Havana is a must see destination as soon as possible before everything changes when Castro dies. There is enough to see you through three to four days in the city itself and then a trip to the National Park is worth a visit and takes about 5 hours by road. If beaches are what you are looking for Varadero is probably where you will think to head. This soul-less place has a good beach with Disneyesque hotels serving all inclusive fare of unimaginative rubbish. The food in Cuba is TERRIBLE, menues look interesting but always disappoint when served at the table. Paticulares (homestays) may do better in this category but they cannot advertise so you have to find one through an agent or word of mouth.
