Do not stay here!

This resort is well past its prime and do not be fooled by the excellent web site – this is the only thing they can do well. The web site states this "is a unique 5-star resort" no kidding it is unique in its poor service.

Our trip started badly when our pre-arranged transfer simply did not appear. As we had arrived from Lima at around 2 in the morning this did not go down well and had it not been for the kindness of the bus driver who was transporting the flight crew to their hotel taking pity on us I swear we would still be at the airport. On arrival the skeleton night staff seemed to think it was funny that they had not picked us up – as you can imagine this was not a good start to the trip.

The next morning we found that we had to sign for the $15 dollar per person breakfast on entering the restaurant. Having signed we then found that the hotel had no milk for tea or coffee. The breakfast itself was one of the poorest displays I have ever seen and the “cold” food was not chilled, the bread and pastries selection was almost non-existent.

The manager received a visit at this point and we were eventually refunded the breakfast money but did not receive an apology for the lack of transfer – all we were told was that things would improve during the course of our stay.

Sadly they did not. The beach bar ran out of bottled water and coca cola – surely staples for a beach resort. The restaurant in the evening, The Banana Tree, had many things missing off the menu – these seemed to be fish or chicken based dishes, maybe they had a problem with their refrigeration unit because having had a meal there I was taken ill for several days. The service was appalling – 30 minutes before our order was even taken and then when the food finally appeared about another 30 minutes later it was not what we had ordered indeed they had come up with some concoction that was not even on the menu.

The hotel makes the excuse that it is on an island and cannot always get supplies – may we suggest that they visit the supermarket a mere 15 minutes walk up the road which is well stocked and indeed even had a large fish and chicken selection the day after the hotel had removed these from their menu.

The suites are not suites but large rooms. The one thing I would concur with on their website is that the rooms are large – the bathrooms are not luxurious and are in need of a facelift. The hotel smells of sewage in many areas and the standard accommodation block area felt depressing – we were thankful to be staying in a Grand Ocean View Suite – but beware some of these are on the ground floor and you will not see the ocean at all. On the plus side it is convenient for the airport and you get the pleasure of watching the flights arrive across the beach. You also get the pleasure of hearing them take off in the middle of the night.

You will pay extra for everything at this hotel and honestly, it is not worth it – go to the local supermarkets, go out to eat or just come to your senses and do not stay here at all. The safe (a necessity based on former reviews) is $2.25 per day. The Internet connection is $3 for 15 minutes and they block java so don't think about using this for any sites that use java applets i.e. flights, hotels, etc. In addition the lobby where the Internet access is located is full of bugs – I got 19 bites in just 15 minutes.

There is nothing luxurious about the resort, the staff or the food and I would concur with one of the previous reviewers that I would rather camp than stay here again.

Fantastic Place

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Plaza Resort from Jan. 26, 2005 for 10 days. We loved the resort and we did not have any problems at all with the service. People were friendly and helpful...The food at the Tipsy Seagull was great and the other pool side restaurant was good for lunch but not great for dinner. The breakfast buffet was good and they had every thing you could want for breakfast. There are great restaurants within walking distance of the Plaza or you can take a cab. Our room was the Grand Suite Ocean View- it was large, the air conditioning working well, we had a very large bathroom and there was ample hot water and a beautiful ocean view on the beach with a balcony- they only thing they could improve on in the rooms could be the bed spreads- but the sheets were very nice- the room was just beautiful. There were 2 coral reefs in front of the resort with fantastic diving right there. The resort was quite and peaceful and Parrots, Peregrine Falcons and Ospreys were there at the resort almost every day. The snorkeling was great too- so much to see and the water was warm. Toucan Divinig was fantastic and Ebby was the best dive master we have ever had- try to get him if you can- Denny was good too! We can't wait to return this beautiful resort and the friendly people.

Fawlty Towers has a new location

from nigelbrighton
My family and I stayed at the Plaza December 2004 for 17 days from 16th December. We arrived at 4am at the Airport but the hotel did not meet us (after an email advising the arrival time) we had to wake up the night front desk person, then we carried our luggage to our room, junior suite (J006) stank of damp, lock removed on patio door, mosquito net broken..went to reception at 10am and was advised they would "spray air freshener" to cure the damp ! and would repair lock..3 visits to reception later and a public slanging match they finally agreed that I was not going to give up and agreed with me that you can't spray damp away, my room was changed..

The swimming pool was under repair until the 23rd December with the beach that requires sandals to walk over the stones.

On New Years Eve we were told and advertised that it was not needed to book the "Gala Dinner" however we arrived at eight o'clock to be told it was sold out....and ended the night at kentucky fried chicken as all other eating places were closed or fully booked.

The food in the hotel was mediocre, the decor is most shappy, and staff had a "what the heck" attitude to the customers. It is never a 4 Star hotel--and I regret that I was a humble customer of yours.

Wet time in Bonaire

from A TripAdvisor Member
We arrived in Bonaire on November 17th to pouring rain, and it didn't get much better over our 7 day stay. When it wasn't raining, it was so humid we were wet all the time anyway. We stayed at the Plaza hotel, where most of the restaurants and bars were closed most of the time due to the rain. We were on an all-inclusive plan and found the food to be very disappointing, and a great many things on the menus were unavailable. When we asked to change to a room-only plan, our request was denied, as was our request to be relocated to an ocean-view room, even though the hotel had vacancies there. We found the front desk employees to be unfriendly and impatient and it took us over an hour to check out due to our having to sort out with them a number of incorrect charges to our bill. Although one certainly can't blame the bad weather on the hotel or its employees, I thought that they could have been more accommodating to their guests considering the circumstances. I doubt that I will stay there again.

Wet stay at the Plaza

from lbc54
We stayed at the Plaza the week of Nov 13-20.
Pick up and transfer to the hotel was quick and effecient. Our room was very spacious and had a beautiful view of the ocean. The bathroom was huge but had seen better days. While we were there it rained every day! Flooding was everywhere! This caused the bar and 2 resturants to close until further notice. I felt that they did the best they could in the circumstances. My husband used Toucan divers and enjoyed it very much.
Breakfast was excellant! Served buffet style with an omlet station. Should we return to Bonaire we would stay here again.

Great Stay, excellent diving

from A TripAdvisor Member
My fiance and I spent 9 days at the Plaza Resort for a meeting and for diving. We were impressed with the efficiency of the hotel transfers from the airport and the baggage handling. Everything was thought of ahead of time. All diving had already been coordinated with the meeting planners. The dive staff were excellent and knowledgable and provided safe dives and excellent dives. The conditions of the hotel were good depending on what you were there for. The casino was closed but we would not have used it. The beaches and the food at the restaurants was good and very inexpensive compared to other islands we have visited. The room we stayed in was a lower priced room but was very nice. It is obvious the resort is slightly older and some things show their age but the staff was very nice. For someone accustomed to hotels like the Atlantis is the Bahamas, go elsewhere. For someone looking for a nice relaxed resort which is focused on diving of a very good quality...two thumbs up.

Beware at the Plaza Resort

from dddd2004
On our third dive trip to Bonaire we stayed for the second time at The Plaza Resort.
We were very disappointed to see how it had deteriorated.
Security is nonexistant as well as management. Friends next door were broken into.
Security and management could care less. Plumbing problems that were reported the first day weren't fixed until the day before we left. They still advertise a Casino but it's been closed for some time. They still are using a temporary filter for the pool. The filtering system's been having problems for a year or so. We had to ask for pillows that weren't moldy. So sad to see a lovely property neglected.
The dive operation Toucan Divers is one of the best anywhere and they have a wonderful beach. Next time we'll stay elsewhere.

Plush Accommodations, World Class Diving

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I just returned from 9 days at the Plaza Resort Bonaire. Our package included 12 boat dives with the on-site dive shop, as well as unlimited shore dives. In the past, we have stayed at some very "upscale" resorts on various islands. Overall, we have not had great experiences with the dive shops at these resorts. We have also stayed at some dedicated "dive" resorts. While the dive shops have been excellent, the resorts have often left a lot to be desired, in terms of food, amenities, etc. The Plaza provided the best of both worlds: A+ diving, in a luxury resort setting. I can't say enough about the dive shop. Excellent boats and facilities. Highly experienced staff. Some friends of ours who live on the island and are professional dive instructors (no, they do not work at/for the Plaza) consider it the best shop on the island. I do not know if that is true. However, I rate the shop as high as any we have dived with. The resort makes full tanks of air available at various locations to facilitate shore diving. We made two shore dives, one day and one night, on the reef right in front of hotel. Although it was certainly not the best site we visited, the reef was very nice, especially at night. We had breakfast and lunch at the resort every day. Breakfast was buffet style, with ample hot and cold selections. We at lunch at the restaurant by the pool (can't remember the name). Nothing fancy. However, the food was fine. I notice that some of the other reviewers have commented negatively on the service at the Plaza. The only place we really noticed poor service was at the beach bar during Happy Hour. It tended to get a bit hectic. Otherwise, the service was fine. Keep in mind, service on almost any Caribbean island is slower than your average service in the States. The concept of "island time" definitely applies. If you can't live with that, don't go. We ate out every night for dinner. The resort was about a 15 minute walk from town. I was surprised by the large number and variety of restaurants to choose from. Our room at the Plaza was not particularly fancy. However, it was nice and big. The air conditioner worked well. We had a balcony that looked out on the beach and the ocean. The maids did a nice job of keeping the room clean. The hotel had a nice beach and beautiful grounds. The pool was average; but who cares with the ocean only a few steps away. The grounds were very well kept. Some fellow divers, who were frequent visitors to Bonaire, commented that the Plaza has the best security of any resort on the island. Once again, I do not know if that is true. However, the grounds were regularly patrolled, and the entrances monitored. The casino was still closed, with no indication of when it will open. In conclusion, we really enjoyed our stay at the Plaza. We will return (hopefully sooner rather than later). I recommend it to hardcore divers, and non-divers alike.

Our Favorite Dive Place

from ScubaNurse1990
This was our third visit to Bonaire, and the Plaza Resort. It remains one of favorite diving destinations and hotel. The resort is beautiful, clean, and the staff is friendly. The reef off the resort beach has much sea life and makes a great night dive. The frog fish remains in his ususal spot off the Tipsy Seagull Bar. Make sure to dive 1000 Steps, it is well worth the walk up and down the steps (only 60 steps in reality). Don't miss the variety of restuarants in town; the Mona Lisa is a must ! We will definitely be coming back.

Beautiful island/love Bonaire

My Wife and I loved the Plaza. Although I have stayed throughout the Island I would have to say that the Plaza offer's the most accom. than the other places. They all are great as long as you stay on the water. Diving is the best of all the CarribeanIslands by far.I've been there 4 time's now and each time it get's better, between the beautiful surrounding's the unbelievable reef'sthe pleasant people and the relaxing atmosphere it is one of the best. And is very safe.

OK resort, terrible service!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We were "first-timers" in Bonaire on October of 2002. Plaza is, in physical terms, a better-than-average place to stay, but the service was some of the worst we've encountered anywhere. For example, I was in need of a bottle opener for my nice, cold Amstel. The kitchen in our suite had many utensils, but alas, no bottle opener of any kind. The resulting hour-long trek involved no less than four rude, unhelpful staff members, and a tiresome escapade through town, finally locating one at a thrift store. (You can bet I will bring that opener with me next time around!) The concierge was downright hostile when we asked for some information concerning a boat-rental advertisment posted in the lobby. Um, isn't the concierge supposed to be a customer service, go-to-type person when one is in need of information? Hmmm.... Then, after arriving home, the Plaza billed us for two of their bathrobes that we left in our rooms, after we purposely told them they were there! We are coming back to Bonaire in April of '04. We love the island, the people, but not the Plaza! If you like being talked down to, being ignored, and enjoy rude service, then the Plaza is the place for you!

Top Local Tips for Kralendijk

Get a basic truck if you are diving If you are diving, more than 70 shore sites to see, rent an entry level truck preferably white as you will beat it up going to the dive sites or inland.

Don't waste time anywhere else - dive South side only. South side is the best diving.
