A Good Place To Relax...

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I just returned from a 5-day/4-night stay at Southern Palms Beach Club. The hotel was pretty much as pictured on their website. I was a little disappointed in our room as it was on the first floor of one of the main buildings (although it did have an Ocean View), I was hoping for a second floor room and when I asked them for another room they said that it "wasn't possible." Also initially, we had a problem with our toilet leaking, but the maintenance people rectified it pretty quick.
Other than that, the room fit our needs and came complete with a livingroom/dining area and functional kitchen.
The best part about the hotel is the beach and their location to town. One restaurant in particular that we frequented that is worth mentioning is "Casa Sol." Like alot of places there, you have your pick of happy hours, theirs was 6-7pm and 10-11pm. But the best part was their Nacho platter, which was made with a secret mixture of ingredients that kept us coming back for more! Highly recommended!
As far as food at the hotel, we only ate breakfast there, which was buffet style and a little pricey ($30 for two). The drinks at the Khus Khus bar were pretty good and just what we needed to cool us off.
If (literally) being steps from the Caribbean Ocean and walking distance from town is what you look for in a vacation, then look no further than Southern Palms Beach Club.

I just returned from Barbados- stayed at Southern Palms Beach Club. I highly recommend this property. The staff was friendly, helpful, they would go out of their way to make sure you are well taken care of. The food is excellent, service - outstanding. From the moment you arrive you will be treated with respect and have nothing to worry about. Thanks to Mrs. Polland and all the staffers at Southern Palms for making our stay an "awesome experience". We will be back!!! The property is clean - grounds are well taken care of, rooms are spacious. This property comes with many amenities that you will not get at other properties - including high tea at 4:00 p.m., and the price is right! My recommendation is for you to check it out! This property is suitable for singles, couples, families and retired. There are activities for everyone! While I was there Southern Palms hosted a local Jazz evening. Awesome! Great property! Thanks!

a manager that could ruin any vacation!!!!!

I was so looking forward to my first trip to the Caribbean and spent a lot of time trying to figure out which islands to go to and which hotels to stay at. If you are a single person, or a couple of single friends choosing Barbados as a destination you will have an amazing holiday just find yourself other accomodation cause this place is for families and older people only. The manager will make it her business to get into your business when you stay there, don't plan to make friends with any locals as I guarantee you she'll have something to say about it. I've done a fair amount of travelling but have NEVER experienced anything like the behaviour that was displayed by the manager of this hotel and as a result checked out early. I'll never go back there and would suggest that you consider your options carfully before choosing this hotel.

It's a shame she puts such a negative vibe on things, if she wasn't there the hotel would be the perfect destination.

Just left paradise......

We booked online with Virgin holidays for about £1,000 for 8 days.POSITIVES:- - The Hotel. Clean rooms, friendly staff, reasonable price, great location, and it's pink...very pink. - The Beaches. The hotel is on Dover beach which is long, wide, clean, uncrowded, and had turtles swimming just 10m from the shore when we were there! Sandy beach is walkable and is great for swimming due to the natural lagoon there. The beaches on the south coast around the hotel were as good as any we found on the island. - The Island. Small enough to drive around in a day (car rental c.a. £50 per day). Would recommend you take a couple of days if you don't want to rush & spend some time on some of the island's other lovely beaches such as Crane beach or Bottom Bay. - Restaurants & Pubs. There are plenty of places to eat and drink just behind the hotel on St Lawrence's Gap or down behind Sandy beach on the road to Bridgetown. A simple meal costs about £10 with a drink. Be careful though, as nowhere will serve food after 9:30.NEGATIVES (none serious enough to make this place anything other than perfect):- - Peddlers on the beach and the Gap. They normally take no for an answer the 2nd or 3rd time, but some can be very hard to get rid of on the Gap at night. - Some mosquitos in the room. Take your favourite way to keep them away with you, as there's not much on offer in the shops. - The vast majority of people we met were very friendly, however I would say that 99% of the time that people randomly chatted to us they wanted something. - Bridgetown didn't strike us as being worth more than half a day's visiting.CONCLUSION:- Great.

Great little hotel - glorious beach

from A TripAdvisor Member
Moved here from another hotel in Barbados which was ghastly. How refreshing! The beach is glorious, meals surprisingly decent, staff helpful (other than one very grumpy barman one evening), rooms clean and perfectly adequate (mine had a lovely seaview). I was there for work which is always the best way to "sample" a new place. This is not a resort full of activities (and the demographics reflect that somewhat) ... but you are in the midst of St. Lawrence Gap with all its restaurants and nightlife should you need a drink after 10:30 pm.All in all, excellent value, would return if I were paying the bill ...!

Nice Hotel Best of Both Worlds

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is a nice hotel. I just returned Feb 2004. The room I stayed in was a ocean view suite that was perfect. It had a balcony where I would sit and enjoy my meals as I watched the beautiful beach and Caribean waters. The rooms were fairly large with a kitchenette and walk in closet. The staff was friendly and helpful from the time I arrived to the time I left. The free use of snorkels and boogie boards was a plus.
You can even get free snorkling and wind surfing lessons from their beach staff. While I was there most of the guests at the hotel were older adults which was great for peace and quiet. When I wanted action the clubs and restaurants were just a short walk from the hotel. It was the best of both worlds. I'm going back!

excellent going again this year to get married

from A TripAdvisor Member
If you want the best of both worlds go to this hotel. Relaxation if you want or hustle and bustle of the gap. Stayed in July 03, and going back again in 04 to get married. The property is right on the empty beach where we watched turtles lay their eggs. The staff were helpful and friendly and the rooms were very good. We stayed in a seaview room which i highly recomend.

paradise!

paradise! it was a holiday to remember and we have already booked to go back next year! every part of the holiday was exellent and the funny and friendly staff made the holiday a dream come true! a bargain for the cost!

Glad I stayed there

Staff - Helpful, friendly, genuine and not fake Location - In the gap.
A reasonable amount of exterior things to do if you decide to leave the resort and do your own thing. Also 20 seconds to the beach. Under 10 seconds if you race someone. Room - Well kept, tidy, simple nothing fancy. Beds were cozy. We had a kitchenette which was definately a bonus for those afternoons/evenings when you want to save some $$ and not dine out. Food - Never actually had their room service or hotel food. I was told it's pricey as for the quality not sure. I would assume it's pretty good nevertheless.

We met up with some other people from other hotels nearby and they all have their plusses and minuses. I personally think it's well rounded location, comfort, service and quality wise.

I would return there if I was planning to return to Barbados

Top Local Tips for Dover

Tiami Catamaran Cruises A fantastic day out - snorkelling and swimming with sea turtles! The crew were fab and friendly. Service was great and lunch was very fine.

Moke Rent one! They will fit four at a pinch. They are fun to drive and cope with the narrow poor roads out in the sticks. You ought to try to get out and around the island, it is a lovely friendly place.

Respect St Lawrence Gap is quite unique as locals and tourists have a special relationship, so my tip is give the locals the respect they deserve and it will be reciprocated.
