Take a TIME OUT and think before you stay here

from A TripAdvisor Member
Location- There was NO mention of the construction in front of the hotel. Dover Beach is disgusting- very rocky and murky (with seaweed). The "Locals" try and get over and "charge" you 5 Bajan dollars for sitting in the lounge chairs!

The proximity to restaurants was decent- Time out is located on the lower end of the restaurant strip. Lots of overpriced restaurants. One of the best deals would be to get the flying fish, rice and peas and macaroni salad dinner from one of the vendors on the street for $8 Bajan dollars. (The one directly across the street from the Ship Inn was my favorite). Cafe Sol Mexican Restaurant was pretty good. If you really want a good restaurant experience- either go further south on the strip (towards Walkers World) and go to Asiagos or better yet, get a taxi and go to the St. James area.

BE ADVISED-Going north on the strip, there is a small part that is rather dark and there are two local homeless men that are clearly short a few marbles. They can be quite scary. DEFINITELY walk in groups when possible.

The upside to this location, there are lots of little gift shops, a mini-mart going towards the Ship Inn restaurant. (There is also a mini-mart south of the Ship Inn called the Dover Market-this one has a better selection of "everything")

Heading south from the Time Out (towards Walkers World store) there is a great little cafe called the Bean and Bagel Cafe. The food, atmosphere and staff are great. Plus, since the food at the time out is not worth eating, plus you have to pay for eggs, meat etc., it makes since to go there in the morning for a good HOT cup of coffee (unlike the lukewarm coffee that is served as part of the continental breakfast) and good fresh bagel/muffin.

If you continue walking south you will see the entrance to the beach. Turtle Beach will have lounge chairs with blue awnings (walk past this beach) just past the sailboat, is Causarina Beach. This beach is very nice! If it were not for the fact that I pre-paid to stay at Time Out- I would have transferred to this hotel in a heartbeat! The beach was wonderful. Good sun, nice clean water and relatively non-crowded.

Rooms- The room was not clean- tidy, but NOT clean. The tub was disgusting- it did not have proper drainage- by the time I finished my shower, the water was half way up my calf!

There were lots of little gnats everywhere. They were all over the desk in the main room and on the vanity in the bathroom. (YUCK!)

I found two small dead leaping frogs under my bed-yes it was disgusting and I left it there to see if the cleaning staff would get to it and on the 6th day of a 7 day stay, it was removed so this explains how "well" they clean. Also found a dead bug inside of my pillow case-GROSS!

Upside to the room- the air DEFINITELY WORKS.

Staff- the staff was rude beyond belief. Of all the rude staffers we conversed with, there were only two staffers that were very nice.

Overall would DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. Just remember, you get what you pay for!

For a nicer Bajan experience stay on the west coast (St. James area).

Nice place to stay.

Well I had mixed feelings about staying here after reading the up and down reviews on this place. It was a nice place to stay, we got an excellent deal on Teletext so decided to give it a go. Time Out is in St.Lawrence Gap, which has a few bars souvenir shops, supermarket, restaurants etc. The closest beach was Dover Beach, which is just across the road from Time Out at The Gap. It seemed nice enough but we only walked around there. For relaxing and a nice day at the beach I recommend both Worthing Beach and Rockley Beach. Worthing Beach is a 10-minute walk from Time Out, turn right out of the hotel walk to the end of The Gap turn left and it is a little further on the left. Rockley is a five-minute bus ride away.

The room we stayed in was spacious clean and tidy with air conditioning and a fridge.
The staff were friendly and helpful. The pool area is small but nice enough we used it on a few occasions. There were a few stereotype Brits who would put there towel down on a sunbed and go out for hours, but it wasn’t a major problem.

Eating out can be expensive but doesn’t have to be. After dark outside The Ships Inn Pub there are food stalls that serve lovely Fish with rice and peas really cheap and good quality. The Ships Inn does a nice meal too. Look out for the Cheffette chain as you can get a filling Roti meal very reasonably priced. Just Stop Café serves a good meal which is a 2-3 minute walk to the left of Time Out. Breakfast was included in our stay and Sugar Dee who serves the fried stuff is very friendly. You do get approached by people to buy things or ask for money but if you are polite and firm with a no thank you they leave you alone. I would stay here again if I went back to Barbados.

Excellent for the price!

I think everyone else's review has been a bit harsh on this hotel.... Considering it is officially a 2* hotel what do these people expect? Personally I was pleasantly suprised!

The rooms are well equiped with TV, mini fridge, safe, hairdryer....

I have stayed in 5 different resorts in Barbados, this had the lowest star and was probably the best one out of them all, the staff were friendly and relaxed, the pool was always clean as were the rooms, Dover beach isnt fantastic but the characters who control the watersports kept me very entertained, and what with the gap being a 10 minute walk down the road it was wonderful.

I understand if you are 50+ and looking for a quiet luxury holiday but if that is the case then why are you staying in a 2* hotel in St. Lawrence Gap???

This isnt the Sandy Lane, you cant expect it to be anywhere near as wonderful, the cheap rates at this hotel are worth every penny though!

I only have to wait a month before i'm there again and I cannot wait!

JUST OK

My FEB. 2004 Stay was ok... AT IT'S BEST...It was my second venture at this hotel..The best thing about this hotel is locality, It's close to the beach, resturants, minimarket, and it's at the bottom of ST. LAWRENCE GAP...The staff is a little snobbish for a 2-1/2 star hotel...Your treated like a tourist and not a guest...The free continental breakfast was good, I guess because it was free...lunch and dinner were ok, but the amount on the plates were skimmish, leaving you hungry a hour later...Although the resturant staff was freindly...The Bar...EXCELLENT...They have a *5* Star BARTENDER, Very nice gentleman, and friendly to everyone he met. There's a swimming pool, but the beach is nearby and EXCELLENT...The whole idea of a vacation is the beach...I'll stay there again, because of the beach and locality of everything...But the hotel itself is just a place to drop your bags and lay your head at the end of the day...I felt safe though...like a comfort inn.

Take the Time Out to find another hotel

This hotel is OK. It has a good location (across from Dover Beach) and is somewhat clean. However, the attitude of some of the staff--at the bar and restaurant in particular, leaves much to be desired. Trying to get friendly service from the bartender was like pulling teeth. Next time I will consider South Beach Hotel, which had rates coparable to Time Out (on -------), but looked a lot classier. P.S. If you want to schedule tours or anything like that, I suggest you do it yourself--the front desk staff completely bungled my snorkeling trip and didn't seem to be very concerned.

Ideal for young people

I stayed at this hotel with a friend of mine in April 2003. The hotel itself is standard being a 3 star but I found the hotel staff very friendly and helpful. The location is ideal for young people who like clubbing etc as its right on St Lawrences Gap where you'll find loads of restaurants and clubs. The only downfall on this holiday was the men of Dover Beach. Although the beach was lovely, the men like to harass single women too much as well as try to push drugs!

Time out at the gap is a very moderate hotel. It's a place to go if you are not planning on spending much time in your room. It's a clean place to take a shower and sleep at night. None thel ess, the staff is unbelievable and the location is amazing. It's in walking distance to almost everything. I would go back.......... with my own beach towels next time!!!

The best part about Time Out was the location--just a stone's throw away from Dover Beach, and right down the road from the nightlife, where you can easily walk home after a night of drinking and dancing.

The facilities were decent--nothing special. I felt like it was an upscale hostel. Given the price, and the fact I just needed a room to crash at night, it was fine.

However, I was expecting a younger, singles crowd given the description of Time Out in its ads. It seemed to be more couples and young families with little nightlife at the lounge.

I guess the important thing to note is that I would stay there again.

3rd Jan 2004: Travelling alone, I've just spent Christmas at Time Out (my first trip to Barbados). Away from the noise but ideally situated for local nightlife, restaurants and days out, I couldn't have found a better spot to "live" for a week. Staff are unobtrusive but will give back friendliness four fold in true Bajan style. Reception staff are notable for their helpfulness. If you pay 20 BD$ supp, it's the biggest & best breakfast in the Gap!!; otherwise the food is comparable local value. Please bear in mind this is a "middle of the road hotel"; if you're looking for a 'stay in the hotel' vacation, it's not for you.
But if you seek a place to hang your hat, rest, sleep and refresh and still be a stones' throw away from the party and spend your days out and about, don't hesitate..... book it!!! PS I recommend the 'Jetty' bar to watch the sundown, 'Pisces' to eat at the best seafood, the 'Reggae Lounge' to live like a true Bajan on the weekend (don't be deterred by its appearance!) are all within easy walking distance and well worth a visit. Also 'Tiami' for snorkelling. In all, I'd go again, right now if I could!Worth every penny!

Looking Forward to visit no 4!!!

I started going to Barbados in 2000 and the last 3 trips have been to the Time Out. The staff and location of the hotel are superb; the swimming pool area is great for pool 'parties'. As with any hotel there are some drawbacks - lack of variety of breakfast, non working showers and the lack of beach towels/room towels (which has been turned into a plus by saying it's to help care for the environment) - but the atmosphere of the whole place makes it a good base to travel round the island, walk to the beach, stroll up the gap and get a taxi into Bridgetown. There is always someone in reception no matter what time you may stagger back!! I have stayed there with a small group of female friends and this year with my kids. It is great value for money and a fun place to be.

Hikng Barbados If you like hiking, see Barbados National trust for their free guided hikes. We went down into ravines we would never have expected were there and saw huge bamboo, stranger figs, huge trees, limestone cliffs and stalagtites. We went onto three ravines, trekking through the sugar cane fields between them.

Hire a cab for a half day or full day Read up about the island and things you'd like to see, Then hire a cab, listen to his ideas, and go on a lovely cruise around the island. It's beautiful and varied, and you'll have a great time!

sunscreen even if it looks cloudy my advice is to wear at least a factor of 15spf+ honestly that carribbean sun can be sly even in a cloudy day :)
