Really good value. Beautiful view

from A TripAdvisor Member
For the price we paid, I loved this hotel. It was basic, but clean. There was a nice quiet restaurant, bar and pool. The local amenities were also good - plenty of other restaurants and local shop.

The balcony had a non interrupted view of the turquoise sea and I loved to watch the daily fisherman swim out with his spear. The hotel had no access to the sea but we went 50yards to the next hotel and their beach and swam to the very-close coral reef to snorkel with colourful fishes.

We went a just out of season so everywhere was nicely quiet. I'm not sure how busy that street would get in season. There was one night the bar/club across the street kept us awake with karaoke. The self catering in eth room looked a little dangerous as the portable 2 ring hob could only sit next to the sink and sparked a bit. But between that and the microwave, we managed fine.

If you can get it at a bargain, I thoroughly recommend it.

pack your ear plugs !

We stayed at the hotel march 2004.
Having waited a good couple of hours for our bags to arrive we settled into our room, which was a good size for the price of the holiday with a great ocean view. The room was very clean and typical of caribbean hotel interior decor.however...the noise from the club accross the road was really intollerable. We did venture out to the mobile police hut outside the hotel (yes a bit odd !) who agreed it was loud at 2 in the morning but there was nothing they could do about it.The staff in the hotel aslo seemed non plused about the terrible music/singing... did i mention it was also a karaoke bar.The noise finally wound up at 3 in the morning this re occured at least 3 times a week...which to be honest really p****d me off.The hotel is distinctly average and proves you do get what you pay for.
Otherwise the holiday was great, barbados is a really beautiful island so do visit and if you're staying at the South Gap Ocean Hotel take ear plugs.

Great comfortable base

Having just come back from a fantastic holiday in Barbados, I thought it would be worthwhile letting you all know my thoughts on the hotel.

Having stayed a couple of hotels down the road four years ago, I knew of the hotel but not whether it was any good or not so decided to give it a go.

My partner and I were very, very pleased with the hotel. It's in a great location, although it is true you do need the old earplugs for a good night's sleep, but after a few nights you get used to the noise (which is not that bad) and are able to have a good nights sleep - unless you want to go out and contribute to the noise!

Maids came everyday, so cleanliness was definately a priority for them which was great. The bar and pool area were okay as well, although did get a little crowded at times, but not overly so as there are so many other places to go anyway so I wouldn't expect, or want to stay round the pool every day.

The only down side to the hotel was the size of the rooms. The studios are fairly small and compact, but if you're just using it as a place to lay your head on an evening then it's fine.

Overall, a good hotel, great location and a great island. This was the 3rd visit for me, and it was a great as it had been previously. For my partner, it was his first visit and he loved it!

Friendliest Hotel on the Gap!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at this hotel during the early part of December 2004 whilst I was visiting a number of local Lodges.

The South Gap Hotel is ideally situated for exploring the South and West coast of this beautiful island. Just a short taxi ride from the Airport and Bridgetown, St Lawrence Gap is a lively and vibrant hotspot that should appeal to diners and clubbers alike.

The hotel itself is small and well run. The staff are very helpful and friendly and the rooms are clean and comfortable. All of the rooms have a balcony with an ocean-view and are well equipped with air-conditioning, fridge, kettle and toaster.

The lower deck area features a good-size swimming pool, restaurant and bar. The barman is a mine of local information, and you must try the cocktails!

There is no direct access to the beach from here, but there is an excellent clean and safe beach just a short walk away, via the hotel next-door.

I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel (or it's sister, the Yellowbird) and I will never forget the wonderful people who made my first visit to Barbados so enjoyable.

t wait to go back

from LettiP
My husband and I spent our honeymoon there in October. We arrived at night time and pulled back the curtains of our hotel room in the morning only to be welcomed by the clear tropical waters and hot sun. The hotel was very clean and the food was nice. Lovely to sit by the pool bar and watch the sun go down while sipping a cocktail or two.
We tried most of the restaurants in St Lawrences Gap and they were delicious. It's a very lively place and can be at times, very loud. But the people are lovely and the beaches are just paradise. Who would want to go anywhere else? We will be back soon.

Loved Barbados

from cazular
My boyfriend and I stayed at the South Gap Ocean Hotel from 26 September 2004 for two weeks. We flew with My Travel and the flight was a bit delayed, which meant we arrived at the hotel in the dark. We woke at 5.30 am the next morning to the most spectacular views of the most beautiful sea. The views from our balcony were second to none. We even saw flying fish one morning! Our room was nice and spacious, nice bathroom, nice and clean. Beach and Bath towels were provided every day. However, the location of the hotel meant that it was quite noisy late at night, with disco music etc going on in the pub/club over the road till the small hours. Ear plugs are a must! Food in St Lawrence was great, the Ship in does a great burger and chips for about a fiver. We also liked the mexican on the corner - cafe sol. In each of the rooms in the hotel there was a great menu guide so you could get an idea of prices of places before you went, but on the whole the restaurants were very affordable. Beaches were lovely, we took a liking to Sandy Beach, as it has a reef some way out which stops the waves and is so calm and crystal clear, we found this beach much better than any we had seen up the west coast! Would definately go back to St Lawrence Gap again, but not the SGOH, would probably stay a bit away from all the action. The Southern Palms hotel was great, we went up to use their pool on a few occasions when ours got a bit crowded. Mossies were a problem for the first couple of days, only got a few bites and after we got a bit of a tan we were ok. Only one convenience store in the Gap, but it has everything you need. A great gift shop also called "Best of Barbados" in the Southern Palms Hotel. Dover Beach was lovely also. Barbados has the best beaches I have seen in a long time! Our highlight was the Catermeran cruise up the west coast. Only 39 pounds, you get picked up, drinks all day, alcoholic too, you just lay there sun bathing and the guys on the boat come round and serve you, its great! Then you stop off, do some swimming with turtles and fish, have a lovely lunch, what more could you ask for! Cant wait to go back to Barbados in the future, we will remember it for a long time to come!

unbelievable view

from cruinne
i stayed in the south ocean gap on july 2004, i thought the hotel was lovely in a brilliant location right in heart of the night life in st lawrance gap litteraly walk out the door and all restaurants and pubs are there, there is also a small 24 bar and arcade in the hotel very small but handy if you feel like a few extra drinks when everything closes...

if you are booking make sure you ask for superior studio as you can walk out the door onto the pool and sunbathing area and also the views are unreal, the rooms are a nice size for the price. also if you can take b&b, as there was loadsa choice from fruit pancakes to a fry... i also had lunch in the hotel which was also really nice also... as for food there are alot of restaurants on the doorstep i would reccommend pieces the most expensive place we ate but i was really nice, but also very reasonable places like the ship inn or mcbrides but to be honest everywhere we ate was fabulous.

but i would highly reccommend the south ocean gap

one of the best

The South Ocean Gap Dump

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have never been to such a disgusting hotel in my life. It was a complete nightmare, which resulted in me leaving the island within 24hrs of getting there.
The room which my baby, wife and myself were staying in had damp down the wall. The celing in the bathroom was coming apart. There was water leeking from the celing onto the television. You could smell the damp before you entered the studio. The cot was placed next to a damp wall and underneath a dripping A/C machine
What was the most upsetting about this torrid affair was the fact that the staff was not bothered to help us. At no time did any of the staff asked if we wanted to move rooms. When we showed the duty manager she said she knew about the problems already. When we asked why did they but us in this room, she simple shrugged her shoulders.
When we were leaving, the manager told us to call reception and they would get someone to help us with our luggage. My wife called them and the receptionist told her no one can help us because it is raining!!!
It was disgusting. It would advise you not to go to such a dump as that. I have never been so glad to be stuck in london traffic!!
