our second time to Discovery bay...

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our second trip to Discovery bay was fantastic! the main reason me and my family ended up going back to disco bay was because of the fantastic staff, they are all so friendly. The food was great although there was a limited choice at lunchtime. On the beach the watersports guys were all a great laugh, i got on really well with all of them. The rooms are quite basic but very clean and your never in them anyway! The grounds of the hotel are immaculate and the monkeys are great! if you want a fab holiday... I definately recommend Discovery bay!

Ummm... we had to move hotels.......

from A TripAdvisor Member
My girlfriend and I arrived in Barbados and we fell in love with the place. It was my first time and my girlfriends third. The exterior of the hotel was attractive and the staff were very friendly and managed to cheer us up even with the rain!!! We went out to the beach to grab a tiny bit of the sun being English as we are, and were struck by a sewage smell and numerous biting sand flies. We thought we were being paranoid and thought nothing of it, however, we went for a walk later on to find a sewage swamp just the other side of the hotel. The smell was over powering, so we decided to move to another hotel and the Virgin rep was very pleased to move us straight away. On arriving to our other hotel, we found a few other couples that had moved from Discovery Bay as well. We will not be returning to the hotel again, but not because of the accommodation, staff or food (which was all great), just because of the smell.

Great Vacation

I just got back from Barbados, and it was the best vacation ever. The hotel was nice and the staff was friendly. The key to an enjoyable hotel experience is, the staff will be as kind and friendly to you as you are to them! Discovery Bay is not a 5 star hotel so do not go there expecting that kind of service or ammenities. We stayed in a room on the 2nd floor with an ocean front view. When we first saw our view of the ocean it brought a tear to my girlfriends eye. We were literally 10 feet away from the beach and ocean. Also, if you are American you can expect to be one of very few, if not the only one's, at the hotel, most guests are British or European, but I don't see that as a negative thing. Discovery Bay is an above average hotel at a great location. If you have the opportunity to visit Barbados you should consider yourself lucky to be surrounded by such beauty. Have fun on your trip, and have a Bank's beer for me!

Great holiday

I returned from a week at the Discovery Bay last Thusday, having been there with my husband, son and his girlfriend. I too was a little apprehensive having read some pretty bad reviews. I can only say that we had a great time and I would like to thank all the staff for their service and their friendly manner. We had some really pleasant "cocktail hours" at the pool bar, and although the food at times (dinner) was not great it was not a problem. We would certainly return to Discovery Bay.

Thank you to ALL the staff at Discovey Bay.We were a party of 4 with an infant & picked the two rainiest weeks to go to Barbados.Everyone did their best to lift spirits and mixed the best rum coolers! Their manner was always pleasant dispite often working double shifts and often made time to entertain the baby.A special thanks to Charles Maynard the resident manager who treated us 2 champagne on our anniversary and was very understanding when we had a problem within our party. My fiance and i will be retuning to The Bay when next in Barbados.

lovely hotel but horrible management

from A TripAdvisor Member
Had a wonderful time at the hotel, however our stay was ruined by the General manager who was quite rude and obnoxious to us while we were there. As a result,I have no intention of returning to the hotelor the island. i think it's a shame thatsuch a lovely hotel should be striken with such horrible mangement.

A recent update

Arriving at the Discovery Bay hotel, I was a little apprehensive after reading previous comments on this website. We were welcomed by a very potent Rum Punch - and a great room with fabulous sea views. First impressions were that although the room was basic, it was large, clean and had all that we needed, fridge, hairdryer, and plenty of storage etc. The evening meal was served in the restaurant, and they alternated between the Table d'hote menu and themed buffet nights. The barbeque night in particular was excellent! Breakfast was buffet style and had all that you would need to set you up for the day, and lunch was served by the pool. The menus did change, both for the evening meals and lunchtime snacks, and the service was spot on, fast and efficient. The staff - were absolutely fantastic. Friendly, polite, and couldn't do enough to help. They got to know my son very well, and really looked after him (he's only 9), making it feel safe for him to wander to the beach and around the gardens without constant supervision. I met the Manager at the Cocktail party, serving more potent rum punches! I found him to be a genuine person, keen to improve the service wherever possible, and look after his guests. I didn't find him false in any way, and could not see any rift between the staff and management. The only thing that did spoil things a little is the small river that runs next to the hotel. Though mainly dry, we had heavy rain one night, and it overflows into the sea, causing the hotel to put red flags up on the beach to stop people swimming in the sea. It took several tides to clear, but after speaking to the Manager, he is working with the environment department on the island to find a solution to the problem. However, with temperatures into the 30's, we found the pool area a lot cooler than the beach, and if we felt the need to swim, we would wander down to Cocomos, a great stop for a cocktail on the beach and a dip in the sea. For those who like snorkling, but don't want to join the crowds on the organised trips, try negotiating a deal with the guys on the beach with the speed boats. We hooked up with another couple and he took us to swim with the turtles, then to see the shipwreck with fabulous fish, for far less than you would pay a tour operator - and he knew who's house on the coast belonged to who. Okay the time out on the boat was less, but we wanted to enjoy the experience and head back to the hotel for happy hour (4.30-6.30).!
Overall, this is a good hotel. If you want 5 star luxury, its not for you, but if you want down-to-earth staff, good service and a taste of what Barbados has to offer, then don't be put off by previous reports. This hotel is aware of the problems, and has overcome many of them.

Staying at the Discovery Bay Hotel

from Travelman023
I stayed in the Discovery Bay Hotel in Holetown, Barbados early November. The hotel was average and in some places very slightly shabby but the service and staff were quite exceptional.Nothing was too much trouble for them and on one occasion (because it was the weekend and I couldn't get laundy done) supplied my room with an iron and board at no cost. Also as a single person you very often get given less than satisfactory rooms - this was not the case, in fact I had a room in prime position. The hotel, was literally five minutes walk to several bars/restaurants (mostly quite casual) with a good choice. The hotel was opposite the bus stop which took you either way. A trip on the yellow and blue bus (sometimes known as the Rasta bus) is a must. Great laugh, lots of loud music and corners on two wheels - definately an experience! The island has lot to do and see. Definately worth a look.

Elegant Discovery Bay

from A TripAdvisor Member
After readind an upsetting and petty review on Discovery Bay I myself have just returned and all I can say is I have been to much worse hotels and destinations worldwide. The hotel and staff were excellent! The beach was beautiful and also the weather no matter what country you visit you will always be hasseled by hawkers etc. that is part of the ambience of going abroad. Deal with it. or if you can't, stay at home. I wish to thank Mr Ramsey the reataurant manager for his curtious and thoughtful attention to detail. I would also like to thank Glynn for his winning smile and hospitality and also Miss Doran Morris. PS the Rum Punch and Coco Loco's were FANTASTIC! Enjoy... Live life to the full.

great vacation best of my life

from Amanda-Steven
Stayed in this fabulous hotel in may 2003, myself and my family took the all inclusive package and having stayed in barbados prior on numerous occasions largely in Saint Lawrence's gap which i would never visit again! this hotel was a dream situated on a golden beach overlooking the carribean it could nopt have been more perfect, howver you do get locals trying to sell you items of jewellery etc the entire island over, however if you treat them with the respect they deserve and remember you are on THEIR island no matter how much you payed for your holiday it is their home relations will be fine. Inside the gorunds of the hotel the gardens are massive and beautiful all kept perfect as you see the employees out in the morning maintaning them, the food at the hotel was rather similar on a nightly basis with 1 or 2 meal changes a night along with a set menu consisting of a few dishes to try. The bar was ecxellent and all inclusive really meant all inclusive with none of this is not included and that is not included fiasco! We were in a seafront ocean view room which is massive with amazing views, the room was rather basic but spotless with a seperate bathroom and dressing room in conjunction with the main sleeping/sitting area. The staff are mostly extremely friendly in particular the chef's, Well worth visiting overall great vacation made greater by the lovely bajans, complete value for money

Top Local Tips for Bridgetown

Jeep Safari This was a great day out. A good chance to see the east coast of the island as well as the west. Fun for kids when they are doing the off-roading. The waves that you see at one of the stops are spectacular!

GO on the reggae buses. Go on the reggae buses but thats only if u like loud music and the bus travels at high speeds. So cool to mix with some local people how go on the bus a lot. If thats not your thing then theres public buses which are yellow and blue and most hotels have bus stops all buses go to and from bridgetown.

Lots of qaulity places to eat out Try local resturants they are really good
