Quite a Nice Hotel

from Citylaw
We enjoyed our two day stay at the Accra Beach Hotel.
We arrived from our ship at 10:00 A.M. and were allowed into our room in 15 minutes; which gave us almost an entire extra day. This was greatly appreciated as we had luggage from the 14 day cruise with us. Our room overlooked the pool and faced directly out to the Caribbean. The beach is immediately beyond the pool area, and although a public beach by law; it is supplied by the hotel with umbellas and lounge chairs. The facilities show some wear and tear, and we had problems getting beach towels. There is a small strip shopping center across the street with an ATM as pointed out by our very helpful bell captain. The staff was generally quite pleasant. The beach is very nice, and even had some wave action for body surfing. We did not try the restaurant, although we noticed a package price for 7 breakfasts and three dinners which seemed reasonable given the high food prices in Barbados. The hotel is a few miles from Bridgetown, and is served by an erratic and crowded bus service. By all means visit the Graeme Hall Botanic Garden one mile south. It is very new, well designed by its Canadian benefactor, and an overall delight. We relied on this website to choose this hotel and were pleased with the result. Two days cost US$552.00; pretty reasonable for Barbados.

Accra - pool closed/construction noise all day!

from Edith1955
We arrived at the Accra on Nov. 8 to discover the pool drained and under construction. The entire pool is being dug up due to electical problems and the noise of pneumatic drills etc was non-stop from 8:30 to 5:00. The hotel is offering to bus guests to another hotel pool, but it's just not the same - it's nice to be able to go back to your room when you want to. And the noise was unreal! Forget about sleeping in, and the restaurant that overlooks the pool serves breakfast - accompanied by deafening construction noise. We couldn't talk during breakfast, it was too noisy. The hotel estimates the pool will be under construction for three weeks, but staff members told me the reality will probably be four or even five weeks. My advice? Do not make reservations at the Accra without verifying that the contruction will be over by the time you arrive.

Terrible Experience

Comments to the actual hotel are as follows...

My girlfriend and I checked in after being evacuated from Grenada after Hurricane Ivan. Her apartment there was destroyed and we were traveling with her small chihuahua (which travels in the in a soft bag in the airplane cabin under the seat in front of us on most commercial flights). When we arrived we explained our situation and though their policy was not to accept pets they would make an exception. We later went out to dinner and upon our return found that they had removed the dog from our room (this dog is not a barker at all) and tied a frayed rope around its neck. They then told us (at around 10:30 after a long day tryiung to get out of Grenada) that we had to leave. The night manager objected to the dog under any circumstances. Not only that, but they were charging me US$50 for the time we spent there. They didn't offer to help us find a hotel or assistance of any kind, perhaps calling a taxi, no, just that we had to leave. Already drained from a long day/week we left and went to the Fairmont Glitter Bay (much nicer and about US$50 more per night.

I just returned to New York to find that they are charging me US$136 dollars which I intend to dispute, but just the thought of it makes me sick.

Anyway, the hotel for the money was really pretty weak. Three channels on the television (including the tourist channel...was hoping to see cnn or bbc news but none of that). The water would not drain from the tub. It was very resort-like (i.e. large and impersonal). There was a terrible band playing in the evening (we thought at first it was karaoke but found out subsequently that it was not.) Didn't get to see the beach, but the surrounding area was not great shakes. Trying to look at it objectively, I think there are some better hotel deals around.

Obviously from my subjective point of view, I'd like to see a hurricane destroy this hotel.

Great stay at Accra Beach

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our stay in Barbados, at the Accra Beach Hotel could not have been better. Great views, great staff and the beach was the best!! We also sailed on the Silver Moon, it was wonderful, so we went twice! Even our taxi driver was the best, telling us all about his island and were to experience the best in food and beach. You could not ask for anything more, we will be back.

Accra Beach Wonderful Holiday

from jamaicajoyce
Can't say enough about Barbados and the Accra Beach Hotel and Resort. We spent six days in late July, 2004.

We took our 18 year old daugher with us; celebrating her high school graduation. We wanted to stay in an area that was bustling with activity, but still provided an upscale feel. The Accra Beach fit the bill.

Our room faced the ocean, with a jacuzzi on our balcony. The hotel provided us with special liquors and/or chocolates each night. A nice touch. Room was very accommodating and very clean.

The beach--Accra Beach--is very nice; busy--but not too busy. Our daughter had her hair braided at the kiosks at the beach. You can shop for souviners right there too.

Lots of different restaurants nearby--St. Lawrence Gap just a short bus, walk or Bajan cab ride away; so too was Bridgetown. Right across the street, a small shopping area with pizza, coffee, a grill, chinese and fast food. Chefette's, is like a McDonalds with very good food--and great ice cream.

Restaurents we enjoyed--Bellini's, Mews, Josef's, Champers, Oistins Fish Fry on Friday. Lots of choices and all very nice.

Explore the island. We rented a car, got lost, but went to Crane Beach (beautiful), Bathesba, and drove all around the island.

We snorkled on Carlisle Bay--very good with lots of fish and shipwrecks.

The Bajan people are very warm, friendly and helpful. The small bus rides were a riot!

I highly recommend Barbados and the Accra Beach Hotel.

very good

from EMMAJANE23
we stayed at the accra for just over 2 weeks, we had a good time there. we stayed in an ocean front room, which had a king bed, fridge, large balcony and also a jacuzzi, the jacuzzi was excellent, well worth paying more for. We didnt go much on the food though, so we mainly ate out at other places. Some places I would recommend (some are a bit of a drive) : Tides Restaurant (Fantastic) and also The Sitar is a fab indian restaurant. The weather was great whilst we were there too, and Durham was a lovely chap (Doorman). All staff very friendly. Also they have a very good gym and squash court.

Fantastic Hotel, Great Staff, Fab location, Great Value

We have just returned from a weeks holiday at the Accra Beach. We travelled as two couples so we booked one of the 2 bedroom suites. the room was perfect, with 2 good sized bedrooms with en-suite, a good lounge area, and to cap it all a jacuzzi on the balcony!!! The pool and pool bar were excellent and being right on a beautiful beach was a dream. The hotel staff were all very helpful and any minor problems we had with the room were dealt with immediately. As I find with all countries, beware of being ripped off by taxi drivers, set a fare before getting in, after checking with the hotel what it should be. The Accra is just a few minutes from st Lawrence Gap were you can find lots of great restaurants and bars, a few to recommend would be Picies, Bellini's and for a top meal where you feel like a celeb try The Restaurant at South Sea, were we also sat on a table next to Sir Cliff!!!!. Finally hire a car for your stay and I would recommend Stoutes Car Rental who were fantastic, even when we looked the keys in the boot. A great time was had by all and we will certainly be returning to the Accra.

Best Holiday Ever!

My family and I have returned today, after spending a fantastic 2 weeks at the Accra Beach Resort. The hotel is ideally situated right on a lovely sandy beach. It is worth paying the little bit extra for an Ocean View Room, not purely for the fabulous view but I was told that the road facing rooms can be affected by street noise. Every member of staff we came into contact with was absolutely fantastic. They all went out of their way to ensure that our stay was made as enjoyable as possible. We went on the half board (breakfast and dinner meal plan). Breakfast was buffet style with the choice of English or Continental. Dinner was a-la-carte. Menu was varied and very good quality. My Father does not like spicy food and mentioned this to the chef. The typical Bajan response of "No problem" came back and the chef prepared a meal every night to my Father's liking. This was just one instance of the staff's willingness to assist. The rooms were completely satisfactory Not plush by any means but functional and kept exceptionally clean. After all, surely you don't go to Barbados to stay in your room! Comments have been made regarding the beach sellers, sure they're there, and so they are in nearly every country I've visited. The difference here however, treat them with respect and say no politely and the majority of them just walk away. If you're troubled by the more persistent one's just mention it to the hotel security guards or the guys handing out the towels and they will either speak to them or tell the police who regularly patrol the beach area. Barbados is a fabulous country, the majority of Bajans are wonderfully friendly and sincere. I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else on the island but Accra Beach and I am over the moon that the Tripadvisor user from Marlborough, MA won't be returning because that means me and my family will stand more chance of getting a room next time we go! If you're just about go or are thinking of going to this hotel then I can thoroughly recommend it. If you fail to enjoy it then there must be something wrong with you, not the hotel or staff!!!

Great location

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was our first visit to Barbados. The Accra Beach was suggested to us by associates of my husband who live in Barbados. I did quite a bit of research on the internet as well before deciding to this would be the place for us.

The location is great. There is a small plaza across the street which has several restaurants, gifts shops and a convenience store - perfect for picking up a snack or two or that forgotten toothbrush, whatever. There is a good sized pharmacy two doors down, a fast food restaurant about 1/2 a block away and a public transportation stop(which is very good and reasonable) next to the cab stand by the hotel.

The water is perfectly potable, so no need to drag bottled water along - one less expense.

We had an ocean view room in the older part of the building. It needed a bit of updating but, hey, we are in the tropics - don't expect perfection. The view was fab from our balcony overlooking the pool and the beach. The hair dryer worked, the air conditioning worked and if you have a problem, the maintence man will be there pretty quickly. I was impressed ! I would suggest paying a bit more for ocean view, island view rooms get all the traffic noise.

We found the staff very helpful and friendly. The pool was great, beach towels are provided. The swim up bar is nice and Fig Tree Snack Bar serves a great club sandwich. Although Accra Beach is public, the hotel provides deck chairs and umbrellas for guests - otherwise you have to rent from vendors on the beach. The ocean current is pretty strong and you hear the waves roaring at night, not a gentle lapping as you might expect. There were life guards on the weekends. It's a small beach and pretty clean when you consider it is public . We were not bothered by vendors at all - I found that particularly pleasant - nothing worse than being harassed as you try to relax on the beach.

This hotels caters to those who are handicapped. I know they have at least one handicaped accessible room and the staff go out of their way to make life easier and more enjoyable for those with difficulties. A young man from England who is confined to a wheelchair told me is was his best vacation ever thanks to the wonderful attention he and his family received at the Accra Beach.

The only negative and caveat is this - don't lose your room key ! It will cost you B$100 (US$50) to replace. Always leave it with the front desk when you go out. My husband put the key in his swimming trunks pocket and -guess what - he lost it in the ocean. Keyless entry would be nice - I think the hotel finds this a great little money maker.

I would certainly go back to the Accra Beach and Barbados - had a really wonderful time.
