Terrible management, bad service and greasy food!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I just came back from a week hols in Harbour Island. We loved the island and the Pink Sands beach! The only and serious problem we found was with the hotel, Coral Sands. At over 600 USD the night, we were expecting to be treated with a little more respect and professionalism. Instead, our comments on the guest book were ripped off by the manager on the day of our departure, leaving us with NO RIGHT whatsoever to complain (I believe a complaint form is a legal requirement in the tourism industry but we were not even offered that possibility)

Some of the problems we encountered at this hotel were the following:

*Total lack of care and management towards the guests: in a full week stay at this small but luxury hotel we were not even asked once if everything was OK with our stay and once our comments were ripped off from the guest book, I requested to see the manager who just turned around his back on us and left after about a two minute conversation. He also DENIED being the manager, despite the fact that his name appears clearly in the hotel website as General Manager!

* Up to 45 min systematic wait at the hotel restaurant before being served what we had ordered, whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner!
Having tried the restaurants at the other three equally expensive hotels in the island we can confirm that the service was perfect and it only took 15min on average to get served. The quality of the food was superior at equal price. Apparently we were not the only ones to have had enough of this nonsense as every single day we'll find some fellow guests from Coral Sands going away from the hotel for all the meals, including breakfast!
Management Response from A TripAdvisor Member
Unfortunatly, this types of comments are well documented in the Hospitality Industry.
Like Restaurant patrons complaining of their meals upon finishing up their plate, or guests complaining of their stay at check-out after spending a week at a Hotel or Resort, one can question the motive of a person not willing to let the Restaurant or Hotel Manager(s) be aware of potential problems as they arise, instead of presenting a "Fait accompli" with little of no chances to have it looked at before demanding compensation.

Asking to meet the Manager of an establishment or send a well crafted letter would always be a better solution than a page full of condescending and prejudiced obscenities on a Hotel Guest Book.

Harbour Island is know as the "Island of friendly people" and the team at Coral Sands is proud to offer the most dedicated service and quality oriented attention to their guests in order to make their stay a most memorable experience.

Amazing time

The only logical reason that I can see for anyone giving the Coral Sands or Harbour Island a bad review is because they want to keep it a secret! If sharing the most perfect beach in the world (I've been to Fiji, Hawaii, Mexico, Florida and believe me nothing comes close to this beach. You hear about how pink it is but nobody tells you that it is also the softest sand anywhere) with about twenty other people (of which usually at least one is a model doing a shoot) sounds like a bad time then certainly don't go. My wife and I just returned and had a blast. Harbour Island is a very charming island full of exteremly nice people that if you choose to get out of your tourist shell are a delight to talk to. You can save money by going into town for breakfast at Arthur's bakery or eating dinner at Ma Ruby's where Jimmy Buffet's self-proclaimed "Cheeseburger in Paradise" is 8 bucks. The island is pretty quiet at night but there are a couple of clubs and bars that stay open late. We loved it and the whole time only wished that more of our friends and family were there to share it with us!

Change is a very good thing!

I must say, with all the renovations and upgrades that the Coral Sands has taken, this hotel is almost totally unrecognizable from a few years ago. It all started with the highly attentive managing staff, which were very helpful and friendly.

NOT TO MENTION THE FOOD!!! As we have been coming to Harbour Island for some time, there has been a growing overall quality in terms of food service and the Coral Sands is finally beginning to make its mark. The new chef serves up some of the most excellent dishes on the entire island, and the price is reasonable.

And who can forget about the beach? This island has one of the nicest beaches in the world and nobody takes better advantage of it than the Coral Sands. There is a huge beach deck where you can eat lunch, lounge, or have drinks, all with a great breeze and a magnificent view.

Overall, there isn't one person I would not recommend this place to. Whether coming for a romantic getaway or whether coming for a family vacation, this hotel will make it all happen!

Peaceful Get-A-Way

After doing my research on the internet for a trip to the Bahamas, I decided on one of the more "quiet" islands to get away from the snow.
The Coral Sands Hotel is right on the beach, but walking distance to Dunmore Town, and the most reasonably priced for the resort location.
We left on January 22, 2005, and because of the snow, missed our plane connections and had a three night stay at the Coral Sands as opposed to the four nights we had already paid for. It was very quiet and relaxing. I believe you could be a well known celebrity and no one would bother you. The most noise came from the numerous roosters inhabiting the island when they announced that dawn had arrived.
Our only downfall was the weather. They had an unusual cold front that week and we wern't able to swim or snorkle. I had read that the beach was the safest place to swim, even though there was a large wave that kept crashing in. The beach was beautiful as all the literature will say, great for strolling and relaxing.
The hotel has excellent gormet meals. Very pricy, but ocassionally we walked to town for a meal at one of the local restaurants. You can purchase food at the resort beach bar till 4:00 p.m., and dinner is not served untill 7:00 p.m., so the resort wasn't very accomodating if you chose to eat between these times.
If I go to the Bahamas again, I believe it will be during the Spring or Fall.

Might Return for the Beach

My wife and I went to Harbour Island in June '04 for our anniversary. First, let me say that the beach at the Coral Sands is nothing short of spectacular. It is actually pink! There are coral formations and decent snorkeling an easy swim off shore. The desk staff at the Coral Sands was consistently friendly and helpful.

However, June was extremely hot. Although our room was very small, it had minimal ventilation and the air conditioning was not up to the job of keeping the air at a tolerable temperature for reading, sleeping, etc.

Do not expect a lot of amenities or entertainment on Harbour Island. The architectural quaintness is way overplayed. The community looks best from a considerable distance or on postcards. Also, the price of meals, both at the hotel and elsewhere on the island were astronomical! Unfortunately, the staff at many of the restaurants and what few shops exist on the island demonstrated that sullen, grudging attitude that is commonly encountered elsewhere in the Bahamas. One is left with the impression that most of the locals would prefer that visitors simply left their money and got the h-ll out!

All of that considered, I would go back in the Winter months for the beach, the snorkeling/diving and to read the novels building up on my desk.

ve Ever Had

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Coral Sands for 8 nights in July in the Lucaya building. We went without our kids to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We loved everything about the hotel and the island.

We realised quickly that Bahamians run on a much slower schedule, but we didn't mind waiting for our food and slowing down our normally hectic pace. It was during this vacation that I realised that this is the first true vacation we've really had -- one in which we were not getting stressed out planning what to do. There were not an overwhelming number of choices for things to do on the island, so we were both able to agree on everything we did: snorkeling, kayaking, relaxing on the beach, and renting a golf cart (after a few days of walking around without one, which was also enjoyable).

We can't wait to go back there. Next time, we hope to learn how to dive, and to rent jet-skis. If we had an unlimited supply of money, we'd live there in a heartbeat.

Dont waste money on pink sands - this is 20 feet next door

from A TripAdvisor Member
Pink sands beach has three hotels on it and this and pink sands are right next to each other. I preferred Coral sands stretch of the beach to Pink Sand's. We had a great room that was brand new. Beautiful ocean view and large balcony. Good food and award winning beach. Great overall vacation.

Great place to unwind - beautiful beach

from A TripAdvisor Member
I returned a week ago from this incredible location. Starting with the beach ... it's beautiful! Only a few small hotels and a few residences along the entire 2 mile stretch, so it's very uncrowded. The thatched-roof "umbrellas" at the beach in front of the hotel are a perfect place to pass the hours between swimming, snorkeling (a nice reef just offshore) and walking the beach. Even better, there are plenty of them for all the guests who wanted to lie in the shade. I stayed in the newest building, the Lucaya, and it is comfortable, well-furnished, and well-maintained. The cleaning staff kept the rooms clean and well supplied (even left extra rugs on the tile floor once they figured out where I had left towels as floor mats (beside the bed, for example) - very attentive!).

Pamela and Jacques, the managers, are very attentive and appear to be doing a great job keeping the place clean, updated and comfortable for the guests. The entire staff is very friendly and tries hard to be helpful.

Only two minor criticisms, and one of those is simply my personal preference. There were many couples with pre-school toddlers around, which made for more noise at the beach and in the restaurant than I would have preferred. For those who do have kids, however, there's a game room, pool table, TV and videos available in the common room, so there are at least some diversions for the little folk. I just would have preferred a quieter environment.

The second criticism relates to the restaurant staff. The food was excellent. Chef Haydo creates some wonderful daily specials. However, the wait staff, while friendly and pleasant, are not well organized. Some nights I was approached 2 or 3 times by different people to take my order, while other nights I was ignored until I asked for a menu. It seemed to me to be a disorganized system at work, coupled with a high level of inefficiency. It struck me as more an issue of training than of lack of effort. On the whole, though, the excellent food was worth waiting for.

I'd recommend Coral Sands highly to those looking to get away from it all and to having a relatively serene vacation at an exquisite location.

Nice for kids

Great beach though I recommend visiting later in the year (we went March 04) as the water was a bit colder than the carribean. Rooms are variable. Ocean front rooms very nice. Food was ok but not excellent.
Lovely main plantation style building. Very pretty pool. Nice beach side bar. Staff ok. Islanders very friendly and the town is walking distance. Everyone either walks or uses golf carts. Some poor areas but the town had charm nonetheless. Good deal for families if you find the right room. Overall, small but not intimate. The Pink Sands next door is more upscale and romantic.

Coral Sands

I had our wedding at the Coral Sands Hotel and everybody and everything turned out perfect. This is the perfect hotel if your looking for a sleepy laid back atmosphere and a beautiful pink sanded beach. The perfect situation is to have a rented golf cart and cruise the island for breakfest and shopping. Some good places to eat include the Deli, Rock House and Angela's. When your day wears down you can always sit in the lobby bar and look at the ocean and discuss anything or everything with Big Red the bartender!

Top Local Tips for Harbour Island

Booking hotel I booked direct, although sometimes not always cheaper. If you sign up to a few hotels on email before going, you may get some special deals come through. This happened to us on our last hotel and we got a fantastic offer.

The Landing Going to Harbour Island, it is really worth while dinnig at The Landing. This is a very old building, in front of the dock where you will arrive to the Island. The building has been refurbished recently and offers a restaurant with a great athmosphere (the music playing, the color of the walls, the level of the light) and very good food (the best we've had in the island).

Get Local Make sure when you are in Harbour Island you get local with dining! Brians BBQ on Friday and Saturday is a must. Hit Angela's Starfish for a traditional Bahamian breakfast sandwich. Make sure to stop by Averys for lunch and by all means get conch salad at Queen Conch.
