Great Vacation

from A TripAdvisor Member
Have just returned from a wonderful week @ Xanadu. Was very wary about or trip as I had read all of the bad reviews and was expecting a dump of a resort--was even thinking about changing resorts before we arrived, but my family & I were very pleasantly surpirsed. Arrived on Sunday, May 4th to a very warm and polite staff. We stayed in the Hibiscus building-a one room with 2 double beds for the 4 of us that overlooked the pool. While there, the pool area was being resurfaced--it was being done in sections so we had no problem swimming. There was some fumes from the product being used, but it did not last long and the pool area is now complete and looks wonderful. The constrtuction that so many have complained about is being done to the tower unit, where there are suites, 1 & 2 bedroom units that are being renovated. As I did not stay in that building, I cann't state whether or not the noise level is excessive, but in speaking to many who did stay in the tower, no one complained about the noise. Yes, there is also some debris outside the building, but it is being kept to a minimum. Only problem that we had, was that each day I needed to remind the housekeeping staff of enough towels for the four of us, but when I did call down, the towels were quickly sent up. Beach area is clean and safe--saw security do mamy walkabouts both day and evening. I have no problems in recommending this reasort and I am not an employee.

We WANTED to like it, but ...

After staying for 10 days at Xanadu I am convinced all positive reviews have been written by the hotel owner and not the guests. If you like urine-colored drinking water (and, hence, yellow towels), missing linens in your room (removed after use by the maid and not replaced), sloppy cleaning, slow or nonexistent customer service with an attitude, hand-washing dishes because the bragged-about dishwasher isn't actually hooked up, and shoddy remodeling craftsmanship, you'll like Xanadu. It could be awesome in the right hands. Instead, it is awful. You can stay somewhere else and take a bus to the beach, so why stay at the resort? The only redeeming quality of the place was the bartender - Amille. A great guy!

nightmare vacation

This was the worst vacation resort I have ever been to.They call themselves a resort,I do not know how or why. They have absolutely nothing to offer.Oh please beware if they get money ahead of time for their activities, the activities are not what they tell you "believe me". I left one event after being there for less than 15 minutes and requested my money back. I had to go downstairs and have my card rekeyed numerous times and they acted like it was such a task for them to do and blamed it on you for not knowing to do it. I never have had to rekey at any resort I have stayed at before, when you were there it was good until you left, but oh"not" here. They are rude, inefficient, irritating, and very unorganized.I was there April 8 thru 13, 2003. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. The taxis are too expensive for the short distance you are going to. The one thing that really bothered me was they have a safe in your room for your valuables, but guess what , you have to pay extra for them. Instead of caring for their guest , they try to get whatever they can out of you , money is the name of the game there. Very dissatisfied guest!

Bad reviews are justified

We had actually booked 9 days at Xanadu and were fortunate that the online booking cocked up and they didn't receive our reservation. We arrived with an infant who was ill (he kept throwing up in the lobby which had horrible fumes in it so I had to keep running outside where one of the staff kept wolf whistling at me). And then they stuck us on a floor full of spring breakers. The hall was like a dorm hall-- all doors open with partiers going from room to room. On the plus side, the rooms were suprisingly quiet and actually quite nice but I was astonished that they even considered putting us on this floor. They never brought us sheets for the cot and were rude when we asked for a kettle (had none despite rating themselves as 'family friendly'). The renovations were throughout and when my husband and I headed down to breakfast they didn't have decaf coffee or even cold cereal. I don't think the waiter said more than a handful of words to us that were required to get information across and seemed bothered that we were even there. We checked out immediately to which the staff finally decided to be considerate realising they were losing money. My husband and I back packed all over the world and are not picky-- we can put up with a lot. This place might work if you are a college student and don't plan to eat while you are there. If you are planning for a relaxing time or have a family-- by all means, stay away.

Still has much to improve

Although we had a renovated studio with a great ocean view, the construction noise from above us was quite loud every morning and lasted about an hour. There are very few activities within the resort. The beach could be more beautiful but it has trash everywhere and on the first day we swam, we could smell a slight odor of sewage where the beach is closer to the marina. There is a free shuttle (around 9:30AM-4:30PM) back and forth from the beach to other resorts including Royal Oasis and Holiday Inn downtown that one could go there and then catch a public bus (last bus at 8PM) to Lucaya beach which is much cleaner. Conch salad is best yet inexpensive at Tony's stand right outside of Scopio restaurant in downtown Freeport. Taxi is quite expensive, and the prices may vary with drivers who do not turn on their meters so it is good to negotiate a fair price before going. For example, on the way from the airport to Xanadu, we paid $18, but $14 on the way back.

absolutley horrible

The staff was very rude, the hotel is a s******* right now because of renovations. They should just close the thing until they are done. Also, you have to pay at least 4 dollars a person for a cab ride to get anywhere. Xanadu and Freeport both suck real bad!

Good and Bad Reviews justified

Both great and rotten reviews are accurate. We just returned on 22 Feb 03. The tower is undergoing complete renovation and is a "walking disaster area." The workers are busting their tails to complete renovations in time for the April rush. Our room was the only renovated and occupied room on the 9th floor. The resort rooms are awesome and have a wonderful view from the balcony of the ocean --- but don't look down! The area directly below the balconies is being used as the dump for everything being taken out of the renovated rooms, boxes from furniture and appliances and construction waste. The resort staff was helpful and generally pleasant to speak with. The resort WILL be a first class location upon completion of renovation and clean up, and we will definitely be returning to Xanadu.

s still Terrible and still Renovating!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I don't know why there are so many review with renovation is completed. I just came back from there and it's was the worst place that I have ever been in my life. They are in renovation process and you are invited to come there to pay for it. I think it will never be completed in next few years. Everyting you read from the other reviews with Terrible rating are true and more. I have about two page full of list to complain to my travel agency. I also have dozens of picture to prove my case. Trust me, you don't want to go there! Ask your travel agent to book you at one of hotel in Lucaya resort area. The beach is not private like they says and it's not a pleasant, either. I love to give more information but it will take too long. All I can say is, it's TERRIBLE place to be spending your hard earned dollars.

Xanadu Beach Resort

I spent 4 nights, 5 days at the Xanadu at the end of January 2003. We went there because of the Dive Shop at the resort. The Dive Shop and diving were excellent. The resort was OK. It still has some major renovations going on. I think when they are done the place will be great but right now there is still a lot to be desired. We were in the Tower. The room was very nice and the view was spectacular but we had to walk through construction to get to the elevator. I think there were only about a dozen rooms occupied in the whole 12 story tower because of the construction. We ate in the Resturant a couple of nights. The food was decent but the choices were limited. Employees said the construction should be done in Feb. but they didn't sound to convincing. It seemed like they have a long way to go to finish the construction. When its done I'd be willing to give them another try.

Could have been better

Disappointed about the $12 fee per person per night at check in. This trip was a sales prize thru the Ciara Group. The room was nice and large, but no remote for the tv. Also had bugs in the room. It is a good idea to rent a car if you want to get around because cabs are $7 - $8 to the International Bazaar and $14 to the airport or port lucaya. The staff was friendly and helpful, but seemed standoffish at first. The lobby was still being renovated as was the bar/restaurant. The onsite drug store never opened while we were there. The vendors on the beach were pesty, but if you feel like buying something they will bargin with you. I'd like to return after renovations are complete.

Top Local Tips for Freeport

Freeport Bonfire is awesome but we paid an extra $40 through our resort and we could've just gone and paid the locals who provide it. Very good food, lots of Bahama Mamas and fun!! But thats about it for the island. Other than just exploring their beautiul, and secluded beaches there's not much else to do. Still alot of distruction from Hurricanes. But that is worth seeing too.

Unexso Dolphin Swim Its fantastic but quite expensive at $169 per person - I felt it was worth it , a real once in a lifetime experience.

get a car IF you dont rent a car you might as well have paid the higher price for a hotel in Port Lucaya since you need a taxi to get anywhere: there are NOT local business around this hotel
