Top Local Tips for Freeport

stay away from old shopping center/marketplace The old marketplace in town (I can't remember the name of it) that used to be a huge tourist draw was pretty scary with drug dealers approaching us. It was like a ghost town so the sellers really hound you and can be pretty darn rude if you don't buy anything

Expensive Bring a lot of money (or at least a credit card with a large amount to spend). Freeport is very expensive for food/taxis.

public taxis Drivers are unfriendly, not helpful, and unpleasant, yet they always have their hand out for a tip. If you want to take the ferry to the Cays, it leaves only at 8am and returns at 4pm. We did not know this and missed itl The ferry from Flamingo Bay to Port Lucaya marketplace is an expensive, pleasant ride, but again with the rude driver; We rented a car from Herts and they were wonderful, friendly, accomadating. They brought the car to us then gave us a ride to the Discovery.
