The Allegro almost ruined our Honeymoon

I would have posted this back in October right after our Honeymoon (Oct 2004) in Aruba, but didn't know about this site. Anyways, I said that The Allegro almost ruined our honeymoon because my wife and I would not let this place ruin our honeymoon even though they tried very hard to. On our second day at The Allegro we were greeted to a rude wake up call of jack hammers pounding us from the above floor. We stayed on the 6th floor south tower and apparently the seventh floor above us was a time share floor. This just happened to be the start of construction for time shares on that floor and the jack hammers were knocking down walls from 9am-6pm for the entire time we were there. What really made me mad was that we knew that Hotel was closing in April for the rest of the year for construction and just could not wonder why they could not wait 5 months to do the construction when the whole place was closed!!! Needless to say that we were very upset and demanded some kind of refund. The hotel manager said it was out of his hands and said the only person who could do something was the manage of the time shares. Well, we were not the only people upset, but the timeshare manager was a piece of work. Instead of being nice to us he was rude and surly and acted like there was nothing he could do. We managed to get a crappy rental car so we didnt have to be stuck amongst the jack hammers. If you ever go to Aruba, do yourself a big favor and avoid this dump. Pay a little bit more at some of the nicer hotels/condos and you will surely got your money's worth. The Allegro's all inclusive deal is great if you like bad buffet food, generic liquor, and hostile management. Unfortunatley due to this bad experience we will probably never return to Aruba- do yourself a favor and take this advice- do not go to the Allegro!

You can not beat the Staff at Occidental

We spent 10 days at the Occidental for our honeymoon and can not speak more highly of the staff at this resort. they were lovely and friendly - especially the DJ in the sports bar and also a couple of the waitresses in the Ballroom (namely Shirley). These people made our holiday for us and we will be back again once it has reopened after the refurbishment.

Apart from the staff the rooms were pristine, the location and pool were fantastic and the price was definately worth booking twice!!

Well done Occidental for making our honeymoon one we will never foget!

I was scared since the hotel was closing down for renovations. There was no need for that the hotel/staff/food etc was top notch as always. We stayed for 10 days and had a great time. This is my favorite place and we have gone to many islands in the past. I love Palm Beach- we rented a car and saw the whole island (Palm Beach is the nicest) we love walking off dinner on the boardwalk which connects the hotels. I thought the food was great although I was upset that they consolidated some of the restaurants because of low occupancy. However, besides that the staff worked hard the food was excellent. There has been many complaints on this sight about the rooms and I agree they are beat up. However, the beach, food, staff/etc etc make up for the old rooms. I'm sure once they renovate the rooms it will be total paradise. I just hope it doesn't become to expensive. The drinks are good, the food is above average and there is much to choose from, the pool is beautiful and the beach is the best on the island. It is a great place I hope they don't change it. I will bring my family back next year. I wouldn't complain about anything except the casino there. I wouldn't play there anymore something seemed fishy about the blackjack. It looked like no one left that place winning anything but that is my 1 and only complaint.

Own a Timeshare and love it!!!

Aruba is nice! This is our fourth year staying at the Allegro Occidental. Our second year in Aruba we were a little disapointed when we got off of our flight in the Queen Beactrice Airport and they told us our luggage was still in Philadelpia. So they gave us four hundred dollars to spend on neccesities until they got us our luggage the next day. After that everything was okay. Our past two times were incredible. Quintina at the bar is very accomodating and makes great beverages. Zoetina works in the buffet and braids my daughters hair every year. The iguanas are very interesting to watch. The pool area is beautiful with a little tile work it would be spectacular.

The hotel was a mess. Rooms dirty, outdated, and bathroom rusty. Food areas dirty. The only nice thing was the weather and the beach. I did not expect the food to be great, but it was well below average. The only good meals were dinner at Papyas. Stay away from the girl in the Bubbles gift shop. She will rip you off with a phone card. Next time will stay at a name hotel such as Hyatt, Radisson, Wyndham, or Marriott.

Completely Outdated

We stayed at the Allegro March 20-27, 2005 and was extremely disappointed. Although the pool/beach area was nice the rooms were in need of major renovation. Not only was the bathroom rusty but the air conditioner vent literally dripped water down the wall soaking the carpet in the entrance to our room. Although they sent maintenance up to repair the situation they pulled the filter out to replace it (WISH WE NEVER WOULD HAVE SAW WHAT WE SAW......god only knows what we had been breathing in during our stay!) only to have the problem worsen. Considering this was our 3rd visit to Aruba I would never return to this hotel. For anybody that said it was great you have to wonder what their idea of a poor establishment really is!

Allegro - Heaven on Earth

Where do I begin to describe heaven? Against the advice of my travel agent we booked the Allegro anyway. She was afraid with the upcoming renovations we wouldnt be happy....but we insisted....the pool looked too fabulous to resist and it was!! We were actually upgraded to a newly renovated room on the 9th Floor overlooking the pool and the beach, the view was spectacular!! The service impeccable and the staff was superb, Isaac and Enrique, will keep you safe and happy!! I like layed back when I travel and it was perfect!!

The Papaya Restaurant was great for steaks...stay away from there for lunch though, the buffet has everything you need for breakfast and dinner.....just go easy....have fruit and salad so you will have plenty of room for the drink(s)of the day!! Caruso's was devine!! Ask for Resty, you will want to take him home with you!! The dine around program is something to take advantage of.....you have to go to the Driftwood and try the catch of the day...they prepare it 5 different ways...YUM!!

We rented a jeep at the hotel ($68/day as opposed to a tour at $70 pp)and just drove around ourselves instead of taking the tours, plus you can take your time if you know what I mean....LOL ....but the ATV's looked like the way to go.....very fun!! The natural pool is closed due to hurricane wave damage.....but worth the trip anyway.....4 wheeling you aint never seen!! Pictures are incredible!! Take some beer and a bag of ice with you and lots of water!!

You have to get up early to reserve a front row seat on the beach (by 6 or you get the second row...which is fine too)...but you can grab some coffee and sit there for a few after you stake your claim...its amazing how easy it is to get up in the morning in paradise. Dont forget to make your dinner reservations early and dont try to eat before 7.....you'll need a nap in the afternoon. Also if you do the dine around ... you have to pick up your vouchers before 5 - they WILL NOT hold them at the desk for you as we found out...but you can call Curuso's at the last minute for reservations yourself....did I tell you I loved that place!!

This was my second trip to Aruba and my boyfriends first...he is hooked....we will be back for Carnival 2006 or sooner!! We are trying to figure out how to move there!! The best of the best...ARUBA!!! You'll love it!!

Great under the circumstances

We were at the Allegro March 12-19. We were very surprised that the service was just as great as last year when we visited. The hotel is getting ready to close for renovations and we thought that they might be "winding down" before the closing but you would never have known. The staff, food, cleanliness, etc. were right up to par and beyond. The concern for the staff (about losing their jobs during renovations) by most of the guests only proves how much we appreciate the great service by these wonderful people who have been there for many years. I don't judge a hotel by the food (because I go for the beach, sun, clean rooms, and service) but it was certainly plentiful and good.
Aruba itself is just wonderful........especially after the winter we've had in the northeast.
We are looking forward to returning after the renovations. We would definetly stay there again.

My fiance and I went to Aruba and stayed at the Occidental. It was horrible. The rooms were old and muggy. The bathroom was old and rusty. We were so disappointed that we changed hotels (even though we could not get our money back). I would not reccommend this hotel to anyone. It really needs renovations!

Top Local Tips for Palm Beach

trip from airport and back We highly recommend getting a Taxi for your trip from the airport and back! If you take the shuttle bus you have to stop at every hotel along the way and then when you get to the hotel you have to stand in line with everyone else that was on the bus. If you take a Taxi, you will get there without all of that! You will arrive, be able to check in with out a line and get to the beach right away without wasting any precious vacation time!

ATV's and Pirate Ship Check out some of the ATV companies...yes you get dirty (fithly dusty) but it was by far the best value. Kini kini i think was ours. Jolly Pirates AM tour was awesome!!! Lunch and snorkling and a show,

THE ONLY THING WATER PROOF w/ these sunscreens is the BOTTLE! Re-APPLY ALWAYS! BRING SUNSCREEN!!! I recommend coppertone SPORT 30. I'm Italian and have sort of olive skin and I BURNED with 30! My BF is German and has fair skin and he roasted! APPLY sunscreen and then after you go in the pool or ocean RE_APPLY it. The only thing water proof is the bottle! Here's my advice for getting color: trying to do a little tanning before you go to get a small base. Then in Aruba, use 30. Always reapply and don't stay in the sun for 6 hours straight. Go in and out of it and build up your tan. DO NOT BUY THE SPRAY stuff. It's easier to put on but because of the alcohol in the bottle, it dries your skin and you will peel. After a couple of days in the sun, get some oil like Coppertone or Hawaiian tropic 10 or 15. Put the 30 on first and then some oil to moisturize your skin. This will help you get more color. I REPEAT DO NOT GO IN THE SUN WITHOUT SUNSCREEN even if you think you tan easily and don't burn. YOU WILL. The sun is strong and with the wind, you don't feel it as much and will spoil all your fun at night, especially if you plan on going out and drinking : ) lol
