Top Local Tips for Oranjestad

getting around/ beaches i rented a bike ($20/day, delivered to hotel) and found that Aruba isn't a bike-friendly place. I was the only one on a bike and cars repeatedly tried to cut me off. I took a lot of back-roads and went to beaches away from the big high-rises, but couldn't avoid the highway and it wasn't for families. Car rental is inexpensive ($30/day) and a good bet, though I hate to add to the pollution. Buses are a good option too. Also, Palm Beach (by the high-rises) is nice, but there are lots of speedboats and people. Travel a half-mile at least north and you will find yourself on a beautiful stretch with fewer people and clearer water. Arashi beach was the best.

I loved Aruba but .... I've been to Aruba about 20 times and stayed in all types of hotels, apts, villas etc.. but honestly.. The Aruba tourism board will need to do something pretty good to make me want to waste my time and money on that island again - it is now a bonfide "tourist trap" and resembles "Atlantic City in the Caribbean". What a shame. Bon Bini my a*%!
