Historical Traveller Reviews of Jolly Harbour Villas Hotel

two thumbs down! Run, Run for your lives!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Visited november for a week of 2002,I was very disappointed, after a few days I decided that I came there to relex but won't ever visit this resort again. everything was so spread out, you had to walk every where and everything was at least a 1/2 to a mile away. rooms were cleaned, grocery store was well stocked but very expensive, having to very picky kids it just became easier and cheaper to eat in then eat out. I have two teen age daughters and the workers would hoot and howler at them.
things were just very expensive. workers were very friendly, beach wasn't bad other then the topless bathers that my husband didn't mind but my daughters and I would rather not seen. and the same guy that i have read about in other reviews was walking around rubbing aloe on us, selling drugs and selling mags that he got from the lobby. I have never been to the caribbean before and thought that is the way that it just is but know better now since visiting other places since then. will never go back, take my advise and go some where else.

Amazing service, beautiful location, perfect choice

from A TripAdvisor Member
We just returned from 8 days at Jolly Harbour VIllas. I chose the hotel based on the reviews on this site and some others but really had no idea what was in store. We were more than pleasantly suprised. I really can't say enough good things. The villa that we stayed in was immaculate, well maintained, private, quiet and had an amazing view.
(and it was a cheaper one with no ac). The grounds were very well kept and the staff was pleasant and helpful. We had a late flight out and we were given a shower villa to use at no charge so that we could clean up before we left. We would definitely stay here again. Food is really expensive everywhere, but the market is well stocked. You can pretty much find everything you would want- even morningstar veggie burgers and silk soymilk (weird and not tropical, I know!) The kitchen has everything you would need to prepare a meal, but be sure to try Coco's at the end of the beach. The view is awesome and the food is great too.
Also try OJ's- about 3 miles from JHV. The tables are right on the beach and it is pretty inexpensive for dinner. Rent a car for a day and drive around, relax and enjoy!

Typical Mediocre Caribbean Resort

from A TripAdvisor Member
Extremely poor service, ugly villas and awful value for your money.
This is the Caribbean at its ugliest. The only thing that saved our holiday was the beautiful beach, but believe me, you pay for it.

Quality Food and Most Fun in Dogwatch Tavern

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had a number of fun nights/early mornings in Dogwatch with quality food and quality company. Hospitality is wonderful - we even got escorted home a bit worse for wear one evening!

Staff are really down to earth, helpful and genuinely care. A big thank you to Ian, for his warmth and advice. We forgot to get the T shirts but hopefully will be back soon!

The food is exceptional - especially Cajun Shrimps with Sweet Chilli Sauce - top marks to Nathan the Chef.

Wish I was there

very nice trip

from Frosty01
We stayed at Jolly Harbour from Dec. 20 to the 27 and we had a great time. We rented a villa for the week from OPBM which is an RCI affiliated timeshare property. The villa was very nice (4 out of 5), air-conditioned, excellent cleaning staff, and fully loaded (2 bedrooms, full kitchen, TV, veranda overlooking a marina and the beach, 3 washrooms ( a jazcuzzi would have been nice) all plates, cups, etc.). For those who have never been here, Jolly Harbour is home to OPBM, Jolly Harbour Villas, and many private villas. There is also a local hotel and the Jolly Beach Resort 2 minutes away. It is basically a small resort city within Antigua. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and the Jolly Beach was beautiful also. Keep in mind that the Jolly Beach resort is an all-inclusive resort where their guests wear brace-lets to allow them to use the free restaurants and services provided by that hotel. We did not have access to their freebies, except the beach which is public. Although it looked like they were having a great time. For everyone else at Jolly harbour, we had access to a nice pool, a kids pool on the other side of the resort area, a 18 hole golf course, squash court and tennis courts. There is an excellent shuttle service to drive you for free anywhere on the resort. The service was excellent. The restaurants at Jolly Harbour were very good, although some were a bit expensive for the food provided. We like Melini's Italian restaurant the best. The casino on property is awesome, but take my advice and watch lots and gamble little. The treasure Island catamarand experience that included a tour of the island, snorkelling, and BBQ with an awesome crew was fun and worth the $75 fee. The whole trip was great, except for the nasty mosquito bites on both of my feet. Also, I wished that they had a fitness centre or gym on site which they don't. One final piece of advice, if you are staying at a villa with a kitchen, bring as much snack food, and small easy meal type food from home because grocery shopping is expensive in Antigua. All in all, an above average trip. Recommend it for families and anyone else looking for good quiet relaxing fun. Cheers, Dil

Stay away from Jolly Divers

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is not a review of the jolly harbour hotel. We went to the dive operation at the resort-Jolly Divers, where I was referred form out hotel. The dive master and the instuctor were the rudest people I have ever encountered. They insulted my dive equipment, the reasons that I was diving and the place that I did my pool and course work. They seemed to have some trouble with "american divers," which they said seemed to not be well trainied. My husband has been on more than 100 dives all over the carribean and he concurred the jollu diver dive master and instructor were the rudest, most obnoxious people we have ever met. We cancelled any subsequent dives with Jolly Divers.

Best Vacation ever!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
After reading alot of the reviews on Tripadvisor, I must admit I was a bit nervous about staying at the Jolly Harbour Golf, Marina. After our 7 day trip on 11/30/03 I must say that I don't know where some of those who wrote the reviews stayed, because this was the best vacation we have ever had!! The resort was beautiful, the people were wonderful and the food and drinks were plentiful! After making new friends (From USA, UK and the Locals) we felt right at home. If you get a chance to visit Antigua (pronounced Antiga) it will be a trip that you will not regret.
We took an Island tour, and our taxi driver Glenmore shared all of the Island history with us in order for us to appreciate what we saw. The catamaran cruise Circumnavagate w/Wadadli Cats and The Pirate Ship Cruise w/Jolly Roger Cruises was a great memory. Yes there were locals trying to sell you things on the beach, but if you remember that this is there life, it won't bother you because if you say no thank you nicely they will leave you alone. Best food and drinks was at the Castaways on the Jolly Harbour beach. Don't bother venturing over to Jolly Beach Resort (which is only a walk along the beach) to eat at Lidia's because when they found out that we were not staying at Jolly Beach Resort, they were not pleasant to us. So, if your going to spend the money on dinner, spend it at the Jolly Harbour Golf and Marina, because they have alot of great restaurants, and you will always get great service. Just sit back, relax, don't rush around and enjoy the views.

Excellent resort

We went in October half-term with Virgin Holidays and it was an idyllic break. It's our first family holiday in the Carribbean and we will go again. The villas are set around a marina with two sets of "fingers"(get one on the south finger near the beach if possible). They are spotless and good standard - but you must get one with air conditioning (we went in one without and it seemed like hell). The rooms also have ceiling fans which can be used instead. Each villa has a terrace with sunbed chairs and table for breakfast or dinner overlooking the marina. The supermarket is unbelievably well stocked - most items (apart from some things like cereals and french cheeses) are UK corner shop prices. Usual mosquito problem but not in the villas themselves which have nets on the windows. Just take plenty of creams. The staff are unbelievably helpful. Our ONLY complaint was that there were no baking trays or other means of cooking in the oven.Lunch in one of the restaurants works out about £20-£25 for family of 4 with drinks. Our last night at the Castaways bar on the beach was particularly memorable. This resort is well spaced out and the main shops and reception are a little too far for most people in the heat. However, the minibus service is free and quite regular. It is well worth getting a hire car for a couple of days to look at St John's, the rainforest and English Harbour. But avoid the Sunday night jump up at Lookout in English Harbour - 200 sunburnt Brits with awful food and not a local in sight. Any other night of the week watching the sunset at the Lookout is a better bet. Antiguans are very friendly and even the beach vendors are charm personified. If I could buy shares in Jolly Harbour I would. This is self catering as it should be.

Absolutely Beautiful!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I vacationed in Antigua from 10/8/03 - 10/15/03. Our stay at the Jolly Harbour Villas was magnificent! We loved the view of the water, the staff on the property was nice, the grocery store had everything that we needed. The only problem is that our t.v. had one working station (CNN) but that turned out the be the best problem ever, because it allowed me to get out and explore the beaches and St. John's instead of watching t.v. I loved it! This the best island and property that I have ever visited. The location was great and we easily took the bus in town. The casino and restaurants on the property were first class. I will definitely be returning very soon. Thanks to TripAdvisor for the other comments. This is the main reason why I chose the Jolly Harbour Villas. God Bless! Tracy Brown

Pleasant, convenient, Pricey

from A TripAdvisor Member
Jolly Harbour Villas are a plesant place to stay in Antigua. Everything
you need is right there.
There is a shopping center which houses two bars, a grocery store and four or five wonderful restaurants.

The villas sit on Jolly Harbour, a dregged out mangrove swamp which
despite its past in a beautiful place.

Jolly beach is walking distance from any villa. The sand is white and
is on the southwestern shore of the island, so there is little undertow
and manageable waves. On most days you can see Montserrat from the
beach which is still active and erupts most days. You may see a cloud
of ash above Montserrat during eruptions. There is little worry about
the Ash in Antigua since the winds blow it away to the west.

If you stay during the weekend and like to sail drop by F dock to join
the Jolly Harbour Yatch club for their weekend races, you can usually
find a spot on one of the boats and join in the after race festivities
later at the Dogwatch Bar.

Have a happy trip, regards Tom Bodine
