Top Local Tips for Dickenson Bay
Mosquitos After reading about the mosquito problem in Antigua, I researched online and found that taking B-1 Vitamin (Thiamine) 75-100 mg per day for 2 weeks prior to traveling would ward off these bothersome biters. It worked!! We talked to many people that had numerous, large bites. Neither one of us had even one nor did we see a mosquito our entire trip. Definately worth taking the vitamin.
Terrific Taxis We arranged for a rental car to be at the airport when we first arrived in Antigua; however, we found that driving was tedious and nerve racking. The narrow streets are not very well maintained, and there is a lack of street signs. Add to that, driving on the left side of the road and that made for a harrowing experience when we were behind the wheel. We ended up leaving the rental car parked in the hotel parking lot, and we used taxis for the remainder of our stay. We found that the taxi service was extremely reliable and punctual, and the rates were reasonable. The taxi drivers were always friendly and included information about the local culture.
Restaurants in the Northwest Corner worth visiting Papa Zouk in St. John's - local Creole-style seafood to die for, and the Caribbean's largest selection of rums, great atmosphere - bring cash! Bay House at Tradewinds is a fantastic setting for lunch or sunsets and the food & service are excellent. La Bussola is an Italian restaurant with wonderful service and fantastic food - very pleasant setting at beachside, nice decor, and a brother/brother management scheme reminiscent of the movie "Big Night". Russell's is a beautiful seafood restaurant perched on an ancient fort overlooking breathtaking views, just north of St. John's Harbor - they have live jazz Sunday evenings if you don't want to make the journey to Shirley Heights. Leah's is another restaurant on Runaway Bay, with very good food, service, and if you care to wager after dinner, an attached casino. The Cove is another drop-dead gorgeous setting with really nice decor & service, and very good food.
