Top Local Tips for Ho Chi Minh

Taxi from airport to city Expect to pay $US10 to get a taxi from the Airport to the centre of town. Ignore the drivers who come up to you as soon as you exit the terminal doors. Instead, walk over the road to one of the cabs parked in the second rank and make sure that you get your price ($10) confirmed before you get in. Saigon Tourist taxis are usually pretty good. And beware of this scam: You're just off the plane, so they know you're ripe for the picking. One bloke comes up to you and offers to give you a ride for 500,000 dong. You say no and then another bloke comes up to you and offers you a ride for 350,000. Again, you say no, so the second bloke says, "What do you mean?! He just said 500,000 and I'm offering 350!" $US10 = 160,000, by the way, so they're totally trying to rip you off. These two blokes are working together, so it's best to ignore them and let them move on to easier prey. Be on the lookout.

Got ripped off by taxi We did not travel on motorbikes or buses as one was too scary to be on it and the other was too crowded hence our only mode of transport was taxi. We got ripped off all the time. The only time we did not get ripped off was when we hailed a taxi to the temple. This taxi driver was so nice that he even took pictures for us from his camera as we left our camera at home. He then left the photos with the security guards where we stayed and did not leave his details for us to repay him the cost of the photos. Other taxi drivers took us around and around and asked for extra tips when we paid our fares.
