Nice 5-star hotel, but lacks a local flavour.
from Wombatkev
We stayed here as part of a package. Hotel was very nice, comfortable & opulent. However, the rooms seemed a little dated, quite cookie-cutter and wasn't very different from other 5-star international chains. It seemed to lack a local touch or flavour, unlike say the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit in Bangkok. Buffet breakfast was good, especially the chocolate croissants. A pleasant base for business or leisure in Saigon.

We have stayed in Sofitels right around the world, and while this one seems much more business-focused than most, it is still a great spot to stay in Saigon.
We were on the 9th floor on the city side of the hotel, so had great views. Our room was modern, spacious, very clean and comfy with a nice big bathroom. Although the style of the decor did seem a bit dated, and there wasn't much 'character' about the place.
The pool is great with excellent views across the city. Staff seemed very friendly and always greeted us warmly (although check-in was quite slow - they seemed to be struggling to find our reservation for a while!).
Yes, the hotel is away from the downtown area, but there is a free shuttle to the market and taxis are so cheap it doesn't really matter. Also the fact that most of the guests are business travllers means the hotel itself is nice and quiet (the pool never seemed to be busy).
Overall a solid, pleasant stay - we would definitely return.

Excelent Hotel for business or leisure
from geologist74
Stayed in executive room during May 2007. The room was very cosy and clean and had all the amenities required by a guest staying on business. Where it scores over other hotels (and indeed Sofitel hotels in other cities) was the provision of free broadband internet access and also the choice of a freshly cooked hot breakfast in the executive lounge. Travel to and from the airport was easy - transport provided by the hotel. The dining menu (coffee shop) is reasonable and the staff are courteous and try to accomodate your wishes. All in all this hotel represents good value for money.
Fantastic!

Loved it. Great reception, imaginative rooms, good food and nice rooftop pool. I would highly recommend this hotel, and it was great value too. Within walking distance of shops and restaurants.
A solid choice

I stayed at this hotel from a "hotel tour" to check out a few hotel properties in Ho Chi Minh last year. I booked a Club level 2 doubles room.
At check-in, we were referred to the Club Lounge check-in on the 16? floor. We were offered drinks immediately upon entering the lounge while the check-in process was being made. 5 minutes later, we were given key card to our rooms. The room was bright and the furnishing was modern. The bed was comfortable and the down pillows was plush. The room was not huge but space design has made it very comfortable to move around. I would say it is the same size as the Renaissance that we stayed later on but much better in terms of space usage.
The walk-in bathroom is nice with all the usual amenities. One of the nicer bathroom that I have used in hotels. It rated favorably to the Sheraton and Hyatt just a bit behind in terms of amenities.
As we checked in a bit early, the welcome fruit plate was not in the room, however 10 minutes later we had the fruit plate delivered with flowers for both the bathroom and table delivered. The service was friendly and my mom rated it over the Sheraton, Hyatt and Renaissance. I would have rated the Sofitel service on par or just a tiny bit lower than the Sheraton but definitively above the Renaissance.
The best thing about the Sofitel aside from its lounge is the pool on top. Very nice pool with a very nice view of the city.
This hotel has good prepaid rates so that bumps its value up above the Renaissance. A good choice!!!!!

Well, what exactly is wrong with this place? There is nothing bothering you can really put your finger on. But somehow it does not leave a 5 Star impression. The English of the Check In / Concierge is bad. The Check In takes forever; Check In personnel have difficulties accepting the details of ther reservation made (e.g. breakfast price). That´s about everything which can be really said. The rest is just an impression, that something could be better. Cleanliness is ok, food is ok, although at least one of the restaurants is more an upgraded McDonalds. Lobby smells of food, because the 1st floor restaurant is open to the lobby. Non Smoking room smells heavily of cigarette smoke, if the neighbor decides to smoke anyway. Aircondition rather loud.
Fantastic hotel

I spent two nights at the Sofitel Plaza Saigon and would thoroughly recommend it. It was luxurious without being too ostentatious - the rooms were lovely with every mod con, and the rooftop pool area was fantastic. On one of the days I had breakfast by the pool and the service was faultless. The pool itself didn't get at all busy during the times I was there although during busy periods (if there is such a thing) I could imagine it might not always be possible to get a lounger. The views of the city from the rooftop pool area are great - you get a great sense of being able to relax while still being able to view the bustling city below.
Don't be put off by the fact the hotel is supposedly in the business district of town. It's literally about a 5 minute walk or alternatively taxis are so incredibly cheap it would be easy to catch a cab across town. There's also a shuttle bus throughout the day to the main market.
Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel and would love to stay there again.

Needs to up its game in the face of competition

Stayed 2 nights at the Sofitel. On arrival reception gave us the wrong room! On booking we were told a regular room was not available and would need to reserve a Club room, yet when we arrived we were given a regular room! After correcting their mistake, the reception sent us off to the room not telling us where the lounge was, opening times, or about any of the facilities available.
The rooms are spacious, but average and could use a bit of TLC. It seems that the Sofitel used to be the premier hotel by far in Saigon and became complacent. Consequently new hotels have caught up and the Sofitel is coming under pressure but has yet to react.
The hotel is a 10min walk from the Diamond Dept Store and Reunification Palace, but not much else nearby. Taxis in Saigon are pretty cheap though.
In summary, nice, but not much more than average with little character. Better suited for the business traveller.

At Home in the Plaza

Almost a week at the SOFITEL PLAZA hotel was enough, I guess! Better for a business than tourist stay, I would think; alas no restos, cafes or bars within walking distance [as it was a little out of the buzzing centre, near the embasssies]. Yet, it fulfilled most of my expectations. Indeed, Sofitel hotels are amongst my favorites, normally in restored classic old hotel buildings, although this one was new and purpose-built. Front-desk staff were up to standard, were most friendly and helpful and spoke English well. The room itself was large-ish, fairly quiet [I had asked for a back-location, high-up and away from the melee]. The bed was admirably king-size and fairly comfortable even if the pillows were 'naff', rubbery and warm; no service-staff could seemingly provide soft 'down' ones - strange indeed for a French-owned 4 star hotel! The breakfast was good-value, buffet-style and replete. Lunch and dinner equally so, with a Parisian Michelin-starred chef in charge. The 18th-floor rooftop pool was a boon, spacious if chilly. Would I stay there again? Maybe. It was good value at the internet rate and I gained a Privilege Card upgrade and points bonus. But it's a pity the Sofitel did not take over the 'Grand' or the 'Majestic', both architectural gems downtown, to restore, as they had in Hanoi - with the 'Metropole' - one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at!
The best hotel in Saigon!

The best hotel in Saigon! I've stayed in Vietnam for 1 week. I've booked first Caravelle hotel 1 night in Executive floor. The staff is not as nice as in Sofitel. They kind of having an attitude.
My staying in Sofitel was perfect from the first to the last day: warm and helping staff, very nice hotel and room design. 2 thumbs up!!

War Remnants Museum The War Remnats Museum is not the "best attraction" in the city as some guidebooks infer and could be easily bypassed if you are short of time.

Day Trip to Cao Dao Temple and Cu Chi Tunnel. Interesting day trip for seeing the unque temple which combine different religions. The educational trip for children about the Vietnam War and how the Viet Cong survive by building under ground tunnels and the cruelty of war.
