Top Local Tips for Ho Chi Minh

Beware of which taxi you choose in both Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) and Hanoi Travelers - make the informed choice or be in for a shouting match! In both cities, choose a taxi with repeated numbers in the telephone number like 18.18.18 in Saigon or 26.26.26 in Hanoi. Also, in Hanoi, we were told at the Hanoi HIlton Opera to only choose Toyota model taxis. We were with a business group and there were consistant problems when people were approached to get in a taxi or they accidentally chose an independent taxi. You can verify this with your hotel when you arrive, but if you don't know this in advance coming from the airport, you may be in for problems like we were. We arrived at 1am in Saigon and within two blocks of the airport the taxi driver demanded money - only $10 but it was scary, non the less.

Taxi rates are standardized Catching a taxi can be relatively cheap, but you'll start to realize in Saigon there's no standard rates. Some taxi drivers charge more and some average. They typically start at one price and you think the price hasn't changed for awhile as you sit in the car. But near the end of your trip, the price starts to escalate. Some taxis escalate faster than the others. Best advice I can give is to catch taxis with brand names like Saigon Tourist. Some taxis at the hotels with no names are the ones you can't trust.

Always take a branded taxi When taking a taxi in HCMC or any other part of Vietnam, ie., VINACAB, SaigonSun Taxi, etc as taxis just labeled as metered are dishonest and meters talley much quicker than they should.
