Historical Traveller Reviews of Duxton Hotel Saigon

Nice hotel, but lots of noise and cigarette smoke

from Lorraine777
We stayed at the hotel for two nights in March. It was a nice hotel but there were a few problems. There is not much of a lobby, but the room and the bathroom was very large, clean and comfortable. At the time, there was construction either in the hotel or nearby, so there was a lot of banging during the day. There was a constant smell of cigarette smoke in the room which was especially hard on us since we are non-smokers and have sensitivities. Electricity went out twice for a few minutes. Very convenient location.

Fairly Mediocre Hotel, although fair location

from club_connoisseur
I stayed in the Duxton for 2 nights in March 2007. This is certainly not a great hotel - there were mistakes with my reservation, mistakes on changing money (i.e. underpaid, although they did sort it out eventually). The breakfast was mixed - no fresh juice, mediocre pastries and coffee (in HCMC of all places) but a decent enough omlette!

My room itself was pretty shabby, a little loud from the adjoining room next door and with a TV that I could barely view. I asked for a room switch and they were not able to accomodate. This is probably the best location to be in in HCMC however.

Club sandwich rating 4/10 (over crispy waffle-like chips and a wee bit too soggy a sandwich).

Pretty Good

from jclaman
A pretty decent 4 star hotel. My only real complaint was that I was in a room connecting to another room and the sounds from the other room were very noticiable thur the connecting door. Very nice breakfast, included. Hotel charges $15/day for internet which was a negative.

Well priced hotel in a good location

from PHILYEOH
We stayed for 5 nights in December. Our group consisted of 2 adults and 3 teenager children and we asked for 2 connecting rooms but upon arrival they offer us a choice of 2 separate rooms with riverside views or two next to each other without the riverside view. We choose the later but as it turned out it wasn't a bad choice. The rooms were good size but the twin beds were rather small and it was not possible to fit 2 teenagers into one bed so we had to request an extra bed. Facilities of the hotel are adequate. There is a small size pool with limited sunbathing area but it catches the sun most of the day. The gym is adequate with dumbells, running and cycling machines. If you want to kill time before your departure flight you can hang around in the pool area, there are showers, lockers and changing facilities.
The breakfast in the hotel is excellent cater well for both Asian and Westerner. They even have a pho counter and it changes everyday. The lobby area has live piano music every evening. Conciege and reception staff is very helpful and we found the currency exchange rate at the reception is very good . The hotel in located in Nguyen Hue, in Dong Khoi District close to other big hotels so it is possible to stroll around shopping and visiting other hotels. It is also next to the electronic area so it is easy to pick a good bargain. If you get up at 5:30a.m you got to the see the Vietnamese doing their morning walk with NO traffic. This place is about 20 mins walk to Ben Thanh market or the backpacker Pham Ngu Lao area where you can book your trip to Mekong Delta. Try the Innoviet in Bui Vien St in Pham Ngu Lao if you want a memorable trip to Mekong delta!!!. Overall we are very satisfied with our stay at The Duxton!!

Not ideal for business travellers

from prana
This is supposed to be a 5-star property. Apart from the grand lobby, we were disappointed by the following:
EXTREMELY POOR INTERNET SUPPORT
There is NO free broadband connection in the room... and the business centre charges USD1 per minute!! So we paid USD18 per day for what is touted as 'fast, reliable in-room internet access'. It was never very fast and one night, so slow that some webpages (not video just normal pages) would not load. I called reception asking them to contact the internet service the next day please. The officer responded by giving me a phone number + asking me to call the internet folks myself. When I expressed disappointment that the Hotel would not take the initiative to do this, his explanation was that most of that USD18 would go to the internet company and not the hotel!
POOR TV RECEPTION, CHOICE OF CHANNELS
No BBC (which for business travellers like us, offers the best coverage of socio-political issues) occasional difficulty to tune in CNN.
LOUSY POOL AREA
A barely adequate gym, and miniscule pool is not what is expected of a 5-star property.

Happy with our choice

from Zabka
We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. Our room was on the 6 floor with city view. Every night and sometimes during the day we could hear constant humming sound (which we thought was outside airconditioning - but we could not see any, so we are still not sure what it was). The room was clean with comfortable bed. The breakfast was very tasty with a good selection of food.
The location of this hotel is a big plus - in the centre couple of blocks from the river, close to shops and restaurants.
I would definitely stay at this hotel again and I can recommend it.

Excellent choice!

from mc582
I would recommend the Duxton as an excellent hotel in terms of price/value. The location is terrific, rooms are quite small but very confortable and very quiet.
I was uncertain between the Duxton and one of the historic hotels (e.g. Majestic), but I was really satisfied with my choice. The Duxton turned out to be more convenient, quieter and better kept.

Good Place to stay in Ho Chi Minh.

from Luxuryman
The Location is excellent and the staff extremely helpful and lovely. Room was very nice. Bed a little on small side but nice large and stylish room. Breakfast was a little disppointing but absolutely fine. Was very happy with gym. Small , but good free weights and nice treadmill, crosstrainer and 2 cycles. A lot of people moan about the pool. I personally thought it had a nice pool area and size was fine for a city hotel. Lots of Markets nearby which is great. Got some DVD's, fake designer underwear etc. All the must do sights are walking distance, as are restaurants. If you want a good french dinner for a great price then you must go to nearby Augustines. It is fantastic. Was very happy staying here.

Loved the Duxton..

Stayed here for three nights with our family of 4. Kids had an interconnecting room which was great. Staff were friendly & the location was superb. Walking distance to restaurants at night. Felt safe in this area at night. Rooms were clean & comfortable. Pool was a little disappointing, just tucked on the side with a construction site for a view. Buffet breakfast was fantastic. The bar/lounge area was a great place to unwind. The spa was handy for a much needed foot massage.Staff were friendly & helpful.
Would stay here again for sure!

Great breakfast, excellent room, substandard pool area

from Darius4522
Excellent hotel apart from the pool area, which is very small and in shadow all of the afternoon. However, the location is great, and the buffet breakfasts were among the best I have had anywhere in the world. Staff are friendly, rooms are clean and well furnished.

Top Local Tips for Ho Chi Minh

Roof top bars The Rex Hotel, Carravelle Hotel, Majestic Hotel and Sheraton has great roof top bars. The Carravelle did a fabulous Mai Tai. The Majestic was the noisest based on it's location to the river but it was great to watch over a cocktail or two. They were all great roof top bars. The drinks made it easier to cross the busy streets of Ho Chi Minh City.

Traffic in HCMC You should always allow an extra hour for travelling in Saigon, especially to the airport as you need to build in time for unforseen accidents, rush hour traffic and the weather.

Getting around Watch out for the mopeds!
