Loved the Caravelle
from AFHampshire
What a fantastic hotel. Centrally located in the heart of the city, the Caravelle truelly lives up to its word. We stayed there as part of our honeymoon and paid a little extra to stay in their Signature Suites, ( c.$30 /night) which gave us access to their Exec Lounge which offers a daily free Happy Hour ( 3 Hours) and free breakfast which was excellent value.
The top floor Saigon Bar is open air with a great view over the city and provides good nightly live entertainment.
The rooms were of a standard international decor, therefore you felt you could have been anywhere in the world, but this did not detract from the superb feeling of luxury which the Caravelle provides.
Definately recommended!

Try the Sheraton
from alainie
The Caravelle is well located and the rooms are adequate, but they really nickle and dime you on everything. The business center charges five times what other 5 stars in VietNam and internet cafes charge for e-mail; mini-bar prices rival U.S. hotels and even though most flights from the U.S. arrive and depart late at night, the hotel charges 1/2 days rate for late check-out (12 noon to 6:30 p.m.) and a full day for check-out after 6:30 p.m. Friends who stayed at the Sheraton (just behind the Caravelle) were offered the free use of a hospitality room where they were able to relax and shower.
A Great Hotel
from HappyTravels-7
I spent 4 nights at the Caravelle and would certainly stay with them again. The rooms are large, well equipmed and extremely comfortable. The bed was very plush and comfortable which was very much appreciated after the hard beds I had experienced during my trip in Vietnam. The staff were extremely helpful. Room service was great as was the breakfast. As others have said the view from the Saigon Bar is something that shouldn't be missed. The location of the hotel is central to all things.
Disappointing
from A TripAdvisor Member
Sorry to say we were disappointed in the Caravelle after seeing the glowing reviews here. We booked 3 nights in a river view room and checked out after the first night and moved to the Renaissance Riverside. There is no real river view from the Caravelle anymore. Since the construction of the Sheraton directly behind the Caravelle there is really only "Sheraton View" with glimpses of the river behind this large pink building and you can happily watch the people in the Sheraton rooms and they can happily watch you. And we were shown a number of the co-called riverview rooms and city view (which were noisy). The staff at Caravelle are fine and the rooms themsleves are comfortable but certainly not luxurious. ( Room 2020 had a semi-clear view of the river with the Sheraton only blocking one half the view, but the room was tiny and had two tiny twin beds - no thanks)
As an aside, there is an awful lot of "star" inflation in HCMC. I have yet to find a 5 star hotel in HCMC. When one considers that the Peninsula in Hong Kong or Bangkok, the Oriental Bangkok, Raffles Singapore and the like are really 5 star hotels, it is impossible to include The Caravelle, the Renaissance Riverside, or even the new Hyatt in that category. Reaonable 4 Star perhaps, or very good 3 star, OK But 5 star? No.

Caravelle ideal in HCMC
from NancyCA
Although on my travels, I try to avoid tall, glitzy, Western-like hotels, I am very happy I booked the Caravelle.
The Caravelle Hotel was perfect for my visit to Saigon. Not only was it in an ideal location, but the service was outstanding. The staff did everything they could to make my stay enjoyable. The hotel has an ATM nearby, safety deposit boxes in the office as well as the rooms, a business center with computers, and a concierge who knows the city.
The breakfast buffet offers a wide range of foods including Vietnamese and Western; some people who have visted before told me it was the best in town.

very nice rooms
from mhstrass
this a very modern looking hotel with a melee of activity going on throughout the first level. Dont let that scare you off. If you get in the elevator and go upstairs this abruptly ends.. There is calm.
I suggest a river view room ...it is just very pleasant and absolutely quiet. The city view rooms will still transmit some of the street noise...which is constant horn honking..to a small degree.
Do not miss going up to the Saigon Bar which overlooks the city. Go at night and enjoy the view while listening to the band cover disco favorites

Caravelle has the best location
from Sambeaux
I tried to time my visit for the opening of the Park Hyatt, but it opened two days after I got to Saigon. However, the Caravelle was outstanding and that's where I'll stay next time. The room was large, well appointed and CLEAN! The staff was great and accomodating, and the location is perfect.
The Bar and Restaurant were exceptional and take the breakfast option; the Pho and offerings were the best part of the day.
I'm going back in Jan 06 and will definitely book here!

A great Hotel

Stayed 4 nights - everything about the Caravelle was perfect. A genuine 5 star hotel with 5 star service.
The breakfast is one of the best I have ever experienced at any hotel.
Would recommend the hotel to anyone.
Added bonus is that the Caravelle is in the middle of the CBD surrounded by dozens of good restaurants.

Still The Best In Saigon
from SkepticalGuest
My wife is Vietnamese, and we have stayed in Saigon more than 20 times over the past five years. We started off with the Caravelle and that is where we are staying from here on in. The staff are very friendly and competent, and the place just has a nice feel to it. The location is also perfect.
There are other, newer 5 star hotels in the same location (Lam Son Square), such as the Sheraton and the Park Hyatt. We have tried both of them, and they are OK, but not as good in our view. The Sheraton is, as Sheratons tend to be, a little too big and impersonal. The Park Hyatt is brand new, and more of a boutique hotel, but is very formal. That may be by design, and if that is your thing, you will like it, but for others it will seem very stuffy. Because the place is brand new, the staff are both inexperienced and almost too eager to please.
You cannot lose with the Caravelle.

Very disappointing
from A TripAdvisor Member
This is a very bland boring business orientated hotel - all the furnishings fitments etc are top quality and the location is excellent but we found it totally lacking in atmosphere. The breakfast was excellent variety as you would expect but lacking in flavour. The staff were pleasant and efficient but lacking in warmth. Compared to other quality hotels we stayed in in Vietnam we did not rate the Caravelle at all and would try elsewhere next time in HCMC. There is not even a comfortable seating area in the public rooms.
Top Local Tips for Ho Chi Minh
Hoi An Restaurant Overrated Lovely. Attentive. Pricey. But a thimble of white wine in a goblet for $7 was so offputting we never quite recovered and it left an indeliable stain on the evening.
Best time to go We visited Ho Chi Minh city in January and the weather was perfect for travelling; warm to hot but cooling down enough in the evenings.
La Camargue Great open-air restaurant....good food, wine, ambience. We go each time we're in HCMC.
