Historical Traveller Reviews of Blue River Hotel
A friendly clean gem!
from andy_r00Thank you very much for your great service!
from LoicParisI came to Ho Chi Minh city to study, so I was looking for a quiet place that wouldn't be too far from my school. After three days spent in a well known but way to noisy guest house my boyfriend & I started to look for something better in the first district.
We were very happy to find the BLUE RIVER Hotel. Located in a small alley in the back packer area the Blue River Hotel is very close to many great restaurants & bars but far enough from the noise of the main streets.
First thing you notice when you arrive is the very friendly and sophisticated staff. They are never intrusive and always supportive.
During our one month long stay we didn't have one bad experience with the staff or with the quality of service. Rooms are big, internet connection strong enough & air-conditioning works well (it's not the case in all other guest houses!).
What makes the Hotel special is the quality of service, lovely people, unexpected treats (fruit...:) & flowers.
The Blue river Hotel is definitely a good choice*

Bed Bugs, Stains on bed linen and average service
from Got_The_Travel_Bug76The hotel pickup did not show up. I called the hotel from the airport who sent a taxi driver who was crazy even by Vietnam standards. The charge from the hotel was $11. (later we paid $8 for the return trip which was booked by a different hotel)
The room was not as clean as some have mentioned. We stayed in a twin room for $25 USD per night. All 3 pillows had stains on them. The sheets were stained. My pillow had lipstick marks and stank of perfume. The staff forgot to clean our room the next day and needed reminding to do so. (when toilet paper has to go in a bin, you at least expect this to be changed daily)
The bed had bed bugs. At no other hotel did I get bitten and at no other time was I scratching then when I was I had been in the room for a couple of hours.
There is no shower recess. Everything gets soaked including the toilet paper.
Despite our booking, the hotel had booked our room and asked us to move rooms to a cheaper one on the third night. As the room was fairly cheap, we had booked and planned to pay for our room for 5 nights even though we had planned an overnight trip to the Mekong Delta for night 4. When we returned, our room had been given to someone else and they moved us to the hotel across the lane called the NGOC MINH which was cheaper at $20 USD per night, cleaner, friendlier, quieter and had a shower recess.
They did not staple the envelope shut when putting things in the safe and they simply peeled it open and re-used the same envelope after it was accessed by us.
In general this was the worst hotel we stayed at in vietnam and I will not be returning to it on my next visit to Vietnam. It was not the first to stuff up the booking but were the fastest to fix the problem.
Great location, super-friendly staff and nice, clean rooms
from Keen_Bean_TravellerThe hotel is in a little alleyway off the main street, which is much quieter than being on the main street, and is a welcome escape from all of the hundreds of motorbikes zooming up and down the roads - if you are looking at other hotels, I would be wary that if you are overlooking the street it could be very noisy.
The rooms are clean, bug free, the hottest shower I have had in ages in Asia, with air con, wifi and TV. The staff really are lovely, and the breakfast is fine - fried egg, baguette and fruit. Simple, but good!
I wouldn't hesitate in reccommending this hotel.
The friendlest little place in Vietnam
from MelbourneJonoFor $20 a night in the backpacker area of Saigon I wasn't getting hopes up at all but from the moment I arrived, Ngu was a breath of fresh air since I had come from the Mekong Delta and had not exactly had personable hotel attendants. Staff seemed to know what you wanted even before you asked for it and could not be more helpful. One staff member even walked with me to the air ticketing office around the corner to help me book a cheap flight to Hoi An (her Vietnemese helped no end).
I noted that I wasn't the only one to get this help and other customers left the place uttering such compliments as "you're the best".
The rooms are clean and adequate for the price. It's a nifty little location - quiet and off the main drag. Can be a little difficult to find at first but that just added to the adventure. They do like to know when you are checking in so be sure you tell that well in advance, or you may risk getting the room you wanted, if you wanted a 'front room' with a view of the laneway...
The staff will always ask after you as you come and clearly couldn't be less interested in other commissions they could make... Hot water, air con, tv, simple internet (just the one computer), simply breaky and a homely atmosphere in a big wide city.... Unmatched in my two weeks in Vietnam.
Superb budget hotel
from thesaint01The nice clean rooms were larger than expected, some of the rooms have balconies. Nicely equipped with tv, fridge and a/c. The hotel is located on a small, quite street but it is still a very central location.
The staff at the hotel were extremely helpful in every way. They were also super friendly and they did not once try to sell tours or such which was a welcome change from most hotels in Vietnam.
The breakfast was included and it was ok. Nothing to special but everything was fresh.
quite a bargain
from drewmeisterThe Blue River is family run, with the family living "somewhere" on the premises. They are all very friendly and spoke decent English. One can see that they take pride in keeping their business and home clean.
For $20 per night, I didn't expect much, and my expectations were exceeded. The room was clean, spacious, and sufficiently quiet.
There were a few downsides. The Blue River advertises that it has internet access. While technically true, neither I nor a couple other guests could get it to work. The bathroom doesn't have a separate shower enclosure, instead there is just a drain in the middle of the floor. This might put some people off. Lastly, the rooms were pretty quiet, except for one night when the owners were pounding on the door to an adjacent room that another guest had somehow jammed shut. It took them a couple hours to fix. We tried to get a tour trip to the Cu Chi tunnels arrainged with the main guy at the Blue River (can't recall his name), which was interesting. He completely forgot about it, then said that everything is booked up. We wen't around the corner bright and early the next day and easily took care of it ourselves. The hotel advertises that breakfast is included. Yes, tea, coffee, eggs and a french roll is included, but that is it.
Cozy, comfy, clean Blue River
from IscahFabulous stay at the Blue River. Highly recommended!

Ben Thanh Market The Ben Thanh market is very hectic and hot, so be prepeared for a cultural adventure in the heat and noise!
"Backpack Area" hotels vs expensive hotels in center of tourist district - taxi The Backpack Hotel area is about a five-minute walk to the central market, a twenty minute walk to the more expensive tourist area near the old Opera House and the expensive hotels nearby. During the walk to the downtown area you'll pass a lot of tourist specialty shops and street vendors. We found that the goods offered in the shops in the Tax Building were of equal/better quality and about the same price as the goods being hawked by the vendors we encountered during the walk. A taxi ride from the Backpack Hotel area to the center of the expensive tourist area is only 12,000 VN Dong (75 cents US) if you flag down a VINASUN taxi. Vinasun taxis always had accurate and honest fare meters. Can't say that for some of the other taxi companies.
Safe Security Always put your valuables in the safe either in the room or at reception. Make sure it is secured by staples and make sure you sign across the openings so that no one can access it without your knowledge.
