Top Local Tips for Hanoi

Coffee I'm a java head and former coffee shop manager from the Pacific Northwest and DC. The best coffee I think was the shop on Hoan Kiem Lake and Highlands Coffee at the end of the lake in a huge building not far from the hotel--maybe 5 minutes walk. The smaller coffee shops on the same street as the hotel I feel a little less safe about sanitary practices. I think you should be careful with the iced coffee and only drink it if you get cubes not the hand chipped stuff. Who knows where that ice has been or how it got there. Handspan Tours Handspan Tours were excellent quality and service. I booked 2 trips with them - the adventure 3 day tour to Halong Bay and an overnight tour to Cuc Phuong National Park and Tam Coc. Both were excellent value for money and went to places that other tourists didn't visit.

Morning exercise at Hoan Kiem Be sure to get out to Hoan Kiem early in the morning (6-6:30am) to see the locals out doing their tai chi, playing badminton, briskly walking, etc...
