This is the worst hotel we have ever stayed in our life. Staff were discourteous, rude, most uncooperative. no basic ameneties in room, not even hot water. Fridge was empty. Restaurant breakfast was same every day, meagre choice, luke warm, slow service. Noisiest hotel in the world, big gap under the door so all noise permeated the room.No adaptors, hairdryers. Laundry service woke us twice at 4am to deliver laundry back to us.When checking out, staff tried to charge us double the rate we had been quoted. Hotel had also seriously overbooked, every day there were dramas at the counter, they threatened to remove our belongings and put them in a store room while we were out! Everyday they said we had to check out, we had been booked for 3 months!!! Disgraceful service, we are thoroughly disgusted

Top Local Tips for Hanoi

Best price for Vietnam souvenir Please visit Dong Xuan market for any souvenir or local handicraft which is vey cheap compare with the ahop in tourist area, opened from morning until 17:00 hrs. And also visit to Night market which is opened from 19:00 - 23:00 hrs on Saturday and Sunday, may items to buy for a good price but please negotiate the price as they always marked up for the tourist.

Exchange rate traps When agreeing the hotel price ensure that you agree the amount in the currency you intend to pay in. We stayed at the Hanoi Plaza Hotel (Hang Nom St) at US$45 per night, paid in Vietnam Dong (VND) and they used VND16,000 as an exchange rate, which was fair. However we also stayed one night at the Lucky Star 2 Hotel (Hang Hom St) at US$65 per night and when we came to pay in VND they insisted on using an exchange rate of VND 16,300 per US$. I protested but they would not listen. Then they tried to cheat me by pretending they did not have the VND10,000 change, after I had given them VND 1,100,000. They proposed a confusing series of money swaps with the end result being I would give them an extra VND 10,000 instead of the other way around. I nearly agreed to it, but saw that the three staff present were all smirking, realised something was wrong, then realised what was going on. I got angry at this point and let them know I was not happy.

A way to deal with motorbike scams Before you pay a motorbike driver, keep your hands on the helmet he gave you for the ride. If you think you're being cheated on the price, refuse to surrender the helmet until the problem is resolved. It works!
