We were here for a few days and booked 2 different tours through them . When deciding on tours the staff were very helpful with our question. They went beyond our expectations in term of service even offering a room to shower and sleep in on getting back from a tour at 5.00am.
The accommodation was what we wanted and the breakfast perfect too.
Kelvin and his staff made our stay very memorable and fun and i would recommend Hanoi phoenix Hotel to anyone to traveling to Hanoi and upon my return.
Thank you for a great holiday and fantastic service also.
Kind regards and with thanks,

I spent 3 nights here with a friend, with a trip to Halong Bay in between. The hotel staff went out of their way to make our stay more comfortable. We got a welcome drink and a cold towel on arrival, and when they found out that I didn't like the mango smoothie they gave us, they offered me a variety of different drinks to compensate.
When we were shown to out room, the staff accompanied us to show us all the features of the the room. We upgraded to the Deluxe City view, the largest room in the hotel. It wasn't particularly huge, but had all the amenities we needed, and was still very cheap.
My friend was sick, and the staff offered to go to the pharmacy to get her medication. The staff also offered to confirm our pick up from our cruise company, our flights home, and they organised a car to take us to the airport. Which I highly recommend, as the airport in Hanoi is quite a way out of town.
The breakfast was great, no buffet, but they presented you with a menu and you could order all you wanted. The eggs were excellent! But beware the coffee is very strong, but tasty...
This hotel does not offer anything special in the way of rooms, or amenities, but the staff more than make up for it. They are just so friendly and helpful, I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

Hanoi Phoenix Hotel is the best little budget hotel I have stayed in during my travels in South East Asia. The team of Kelvin, his lovely wife Tam and their attentive staff were are always incredibly helpful and provided local recommendations and advice on how to get the most out of Hanoi and environs. The rooms are high quality, especially considering the very moderate price The hotel is perfectly situated in a quiet street in the middle of the Old Quarter. They also arrange airport pickup, bookings for tours (very good value) and travel ticketing service. Well worth considering

Dear Fellow travelers/backpackers,
Our stay at the Phoenix Hotel was great. We originally were meant to stay for 1 night but extended it to 3 as we were made to feel very welcome by all the staff plus the rooms are great for the price, with great air conditioning ( " Thank god") The manager, Kelvin arranged our trip to Halong Bay, which was fantastically good value, new boat, big double room with balcony + shower in our cabin...The breakfast are tasty and you can get double or more. ' Tam', one of the staff is always smiling and at hand to serve you every demand, she also helped us to book the train ticket to Hue.

We would recommend this hotel to anyone who looking for accommodation in Hanoi.

We spent 3 nights stay at the Phoenix Hotel and everything was perfect. For the room 22$ per night, we can say that we had good quality for value, air-conditioner ,fridge, free internet and free buffet breakfast...What can you ask more for that price. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We went on tour to Halong bay and Sapa which were organized through the hotel and worked out very well. Location of the hotel is perfect . We would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a budget accommodation in Hanoi.

Great value for money. The best thing about the Hotel was the staff. They were so helpful and friendly and had excellent English. They helped us to book good quality tours at reasonable prices. If we go back to Hanoi we would definitely check in here again!

It is definitely a great value for money budget hotel to stay in. The services at the hotel was excellent! The staffs are fluent in their English - which is most important to most travellers. The room is relatively spacious and bathroom is well-equipped. We used their shower everyday and there was enough hot water which really comes in handy. We will definitely come back to Hanoi and stay at Hanoi Phoenix Hotel again. Thank you to all the staffs there for the great times we had. Hope to see you all again soon.

This is our second time stay in this hotel which is formally known as Ocean Stars Hotel. Hanoi Phoenix Hotel has been totally changed the name the owner and staff.
They used to have some cheap rooms but after being renovated, remodelled and more facilities are equiped ,the price is changed. The staff is very helful, enthusiatic and well-trained and Manager is always outstanding. No more rude staff and creepy atmosphere exists here. Rates with free internet (Wifi ,Broadband) and Valued added tax ,included special breakfast such as Vietnamese noodle soup banana pancake, coffee and Continental breakfast available. They are also a travel agency which is very convenient for the customers with suitable prices.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Hanoi Phoenix Hotel

Highly recommended

from SueB78
We were first attracted to the hotel after reading all of the great reviews and on arrival we could not fault the place.
The rooms are clean, the free breakfast is great and the staff were fantastic.
The manager, Kelvin was very friendly and efficient and couldn't do more to help us during our stay.
We booked tours to Sapa and Halong Bay through them which proved to be very well organised and good value for money.

Welcome to Hanoi Phoenix

from garetharnold
I arrived in Hanoi with two friends at the beginning of June after travelling from Bangkok through Cambodia and up Vietnam. We arrived early in the morning after travelling overnight from Hue. After getting off the bus we asked the guide to take us to a guesthouse and we ended up at the Hanoi Guesthouse in the Old Quarter of the city. This was average but cheap accomodation and was OK for one night. The next day my friends left and I decided to stay in the guesthouse for another night, however, after being moved to the top and then the bottom of many flights of stairs and sleeping in a room very near reception which wasn't very clean I decided I would move the next day. I had been recommended the Hanoi Phoenix from two American girls on a trip to Halong Bay and this name stuck in my head and seemed the obvious choice for my first stop. I was welcomed on the road by the Hotel manager and helped into the reception. I was shown a room and I agreed to stay immediately! The room was very clean, had both air conditioning and a fan, an ensuite bathroom with shower and hot water, and television with satelite (which was very important as the European Football Championship had just got underway). The staff were very friendly and the manager speaks good English and is helpful. There is free breakfast and internet and you can get photos put on to a CD or DVD. The hotel also offer a travel service with trips to both Ha Long Bay and Sapa Valley. As I had already visited Halong Bay I wanted to see more of Hanoi and three of the hotel staff took us out on motorbikes for a very enjoyable day. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone, however, if you on a budget but want somewhere clean, comfortable and in a good location it is perfect, however, if you decide to go out late of an evening it can be difficult to get back into the hotel. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Phoenix and it provided a great base for my week in Hanoi. There is a good atmosphere and other guests seem happy with their stay.

great trips

After booking another hotel we were sent to the Hanoi Phoenix Hotel. The hotel is renovated en looks very clean. The personnel is very friendly and the trip they arranged for us to Sapa was also perfect.
I can recommend this hotel to everyone!

very helpful

from tmckellar
We overflowed from the Hanoi Guest House to this Hotel (40 mtrs down the street) and this worked to our advantage. The Famous Ms. Thin was the manager and she was so helpful in booking Hanoi tours(including Sapa & Halong). She also booked tours and hotels for the rest of our journey thru Vietnam. Train station pick up was a great help at all destinations. The room was basic, but for $15, I have no complaints. To us, the best feature was the shower facility on return from tours, and luggage storage facility, for no charge.
This hotel will have a name change by now, but the address is still the same at 43 Bat Su St.
Thank U Ms Thin for all your help and friendship, and thanks to your helpful staff.

Staff with bad attitude

from btuserid
The staff at Ocean Star are rude, arrogant and only interested in selling tours. They are not prepared to assist customers if any issues arise of the tour does not live up to expectations. During my stay I heard other tourists had similar problems with the hotel staff. Although the hotel is cheap I would not recommend it to anyone.

part of the family

from mons20
Ocean Star hotel was by far one of my most enjoyable stays during my entire time spent in Vietnam. I can say with utmost sincerity that the professionalism at Ocean Star Hotel is far and above the two star rating and is instead that of a 5 star hotel. Tha family atmosphere contributes to an environment that is both friendly and welcoming while extending the courtesy of a travel agents on numerous ocassions. If you spend any time in Hanoi make sure you take time to stay at the Ocean Star Hotel as it will be memorable for all the right reasons.

Ocean Stars: Another Titanic

from distuzled
While traveling as part of a group through central and northern Vietnam, our travel agent booked us into the Ocean Stars Hotel as the hub of our trip to outlying areas. This seemed to make sense as they had enough rooms to accommodate our group together in the Old Quarter. Our first night was uneventful, with the exception of each member of the group having to request toilet paper and soap for their room. Upon further inspection, several members discovered soiled linens; some of which still had hair on them, and others with bloodspots.

After returning to the hotel from a sidetrip to central Vietnam, we were informed that in spite of the group reservation, the assitant manager had decided to split us between the Ocean Stars and another hotel several blocks away owned by the same person. They explained that they had several individuals who, although they did not have reservations, decided to stay on after a one-night stay at the hotel. Even after arguing that our reservation had been made months in advance, and that we wanted to stay together as a group, the assistant manager insisted that that was the only way he would accommodate us. After several hours of contacting the tour organizer and coordinating between them and the hotel manager, our original reservation was honored.

We walked the 5 flights of stairs to our room (the hotel has no lifts for any of its 6 floors), only to enter our room and discover a staff member sleeping in one of our beds. He had shoved a wire coat hanger into the electrical control key holder so that the fan would work while he slept. After waking, he attempted to merely straighten the sheet and bedspread instead of replacing the linens he slept on. We had to insist that another staff member retrieve clean linens so that our bed could be made. The following morning, two members of our group discovered that they were the main course for a bedbug feast while they slept. When the staff was informed, they claimed that our friends were merely victims of dietary allergies, and insisted that their hotel was clean.

On the positive side, they did provide free internet access and low fee currency exchange on-site.

t trust them

THE GOOD

I ended up at Ocean Stars because I stayed at another hotel. At first they put me in a windowless room that was cheaper, eventually I moved to a room with with a window, which was much more nicer and only $15.

The staff here are friendly, there is internet, they will pick you up for the "real price", working AC and breakfast is good. The rooms are also in pretty good condition, so Ocean Stars is pretty good value for money.

THE BAD

But if you stay here, please be a little careful. Some other people staying at hotel used other tours groups because they were cheaper (for the exact same tour), and then were not allowed to store their luggage in the hotel.

When I checked out, the manager for the hotel wrote down that my room price was $180 more than the actual price! He switched some of the numbers, and when I caught it he claimed it was a mistake. I don't believe that this could possibly be a mistake and don't ever want to deal with them again -- I think they cannot be trusted.

In conclusion, a no frills, clean, decent place, but if you stay here please be on careful.

Disappointing..

from GreenTravel
We had booked in another place just like another couple but they didn't have rooms for us when we arrived. So they put the 4 of us up in Ocean Stars just for the night.

The poorly ventilated and musty-smelling room on the 1st floor they gave us was so small - the bed was just 18cm (0.5 ft) from the wall! No space for even a chair.. The airconditioning didn't work well and the wall fan was too noisy to have it turned on. The window opens out to the air well inside the hotel. The tap hose was faulty - water leaked all night. Some of the floor tiles were broken. The bed was uncomfortable as we could feel the metal coils in the spring mattress. Worse were the mosquitoes!

The other couple had a room on the 2nd floor, facing the front street which was noisy.. The poor folks complained of a poor night rest.

Nice points:
- We liked the friendly staff (English OK)
- Free internet access on their 5 PCs
- Tour desk in the lobby
- There's tables and chairs for breakfast

Note: Some TripAdvisors members had earlier given this guesthouse good to excellent reviews. Perhaps we're just unfortunate to get a "disused" room (this will explain the poor maintenance of the airconditioning, broken tiles, musty smell, dust on the doors and windows..). Ask for a better room!

Great staff and very clean

from calie
Very honest staff and friendly too. Hotel is very clean and bathrooms look brand new although 4 years old. Obviously very popular as they get filled fast in the day. Stayed in twin room with chairs and window for $15 1st time, then left, they stored luggage and on return did not have same size room..still twin but small inner window, no chairs....but still tv, fridge and closet....and bigger bathroom..for $10!!. You can get rooms for less with no window and fewer beds. Breakfast is great with 4 options and always fruit. Fast laundry, free internet....there is construction next door as they are expanding and putting in an elevator..bBut the noise stops at 5:30 pm. Manager and all the boys are great...but they do love selling those side trips. ..city tour worth it as main sites are very spread out and good lunch included

Top Local Tips for Hanoi

Memorial House Memorial House's a lovely, cute, Chinese style house. Quite worth of visiting.

Vietnamese Food. Look for Cha Cha La Vuong, cook your own meal at your table. Fresh vegetables and add your your own chilli sauce. Delicious.

Mafia taxi Lots of mafia taxis in Hanoi. Get Vietnamese Dong before you arrive and search the price of a taxi ride to your hotel to avoid getting ripped off.
