Remarkably serene hotel

Fantastic little hotel. Cheap, clean, great location, PC with free internet in your room, air-conditioning.... I could go on and on. The most amazing thing about this hotel though is, that despite it's old town location, how peaceful it is. All around is the beeping horns and rumbling diesel engines of the seemingly endless amount of scooters in Hanoi and yet down this little alley, right in the middle of it all, there is almost no noise at all.

I only booked the hotel for a day stay, but I recommend them wholeheartedly as they also organised by entire trip in Nth Vietnam as I requested from Australia. I booked a trip to Sapa and Halong Bay through them and they organised all relevant transport to from and between destinations, they even threw in a breakfast stop between the two. All I can say is thank you, your staff from the "Robot " to Michael all ensured all aspects of the trip were executed well. The room was spotless and your breakfast great.
Absolutely Elegant In Every Way

My wife booked a two night stay with an overnight trip to Ha Long Bay in between. I was skeptical at first since my wife's history for vacation planning is shakey at best. I have to admit that this may be the BEST hotel we have ever stayed at. My mainstays are the Hiltons, Marriotts and W hotels. I guess the only comparable hotel in Hanoi would be the Sofitel. However, after staying at the HE2, I agree with the hotel's claim of being the BEST hotel in Hanoi's Old Quarter. I would only add that the HE2 is the best in Hanoi. Rooms: In celebration of my parent's 30th wedding anniversary, we booked suites, with one having a walk-out balcony facing Ma May Street. A bottle of wine and fruit basket was a very pleasant surprise. Each room was equipped with a computer with FREE internet access, which is very convenient. There is free internet access in the lobby as well. Each room also had a flat panel TV, DVD player, refrigerator and modern bathroom. Even my Hilton doesn't have that (except LVHilton) or even the other luxury hotels I've stayed at. The only complaint I would have is that there was a strange odor coming from the bathroom. But if you keep the door closed, then it is really not a issue. Location: Located in a very small street, Pho Ma May, but surrounded by restaurants, clothing and souveneir shops. Lake Hoan Kiem is only a 10 minute walk away. The shopping district is about a 5 minute walk away. There are taxis available right outside the hotel and the cost is very cheap (about $1USD to get from the hotel to the other side of thel ake). The HE2 staff are very fluent in English. You only need mention where you would like to go and do and they can either provide very detailed walking directions or talk to the taxi driver for you (who by the way, know very little English). Staff: To me, this is the most important feature of a classy hotel. And the HE2 does not disappoint. Everyone from the manager to the door man is always smiling. They'll pretty much do anything for you. All you have to do is ask. Give you directions to the water puppet show? No problem. Make reservations at Bobby Chim's? No problem. Arrange a shuttle to the airport? No problem. Recommend places to shop or eat? No problem. The majority of the hotel clientele appeared to be American during our time there. So the staff are pretty knowledgeable as to what us Yanks like and dislike. Other: The HE2 does not really have a restaurant or bar or premises, but there are plenty around within walking or crawling distance (depending on your state). However, the hotel does provide a made to order breakfast in the morning in their small cafe. They have everything from traditional Western fare (bacon and eggs) to traditional Vietnamese (pho). Since there are few rooms at the HE2, you would pretty much see everyone staying at the hotel during breakfast time. Since most are Americans, it makes for terrific conversation. We ended up exchanging ideas for sightseeing and trips. I'm a very difficult person to please. And I never write reviews for hotels I've stayed in because I pretty much get what I expect. However, the HE2 is a very special place. Very quaint, very romantic, and surprisingly luxurious. You wouldn't know it from the outside, but after meeting the staff and seeing your room, I'm sure you'll agree with me. I know they just opened up HE3 but I am planning on coming back fto the HE2 for my 10th wedding anniversary in two years. pecial thanks to Mr. Michael, Mr. Dzung and Ms. Tan for making our trip to Hanoi very enjoyable and very memorable.

Took a professional trip to Vietnam in November. This was my first trip to the country and I did not know what to expect either in Hanoi or HCM. I booked a room with the Hotel Elegance 2 in Hanoi after looking at their website. I was a bit skeptical when I did the booking since many hotels tend to "spruce up" their isamge on the web and I wasn't expecting much.
I could not have been more wrong!
My hotel stay at the Hotel Eleance was absoultely fantastc! I travel quite a bit and I can honestly say I have rarely been treated with such professionalism nor have I experienced as much genuine care for my comfort and well-being as I have during my stay at the Hotel Elegance 2
The rooms are extremely comfortable. The breakfast (provided in the rate) extremely good.The central location (in the Old Quarter) is great. The service is attentitve. The staff extremely helpful and always willing to go out of their way to assist you in any way possible.
For instance, I am a very light sleeper and when I first arrived I was given a room on the second floor where I could hear the sound of the elevator bell chiming (no one else heard it so it must be me and my sensitive hearing). Regardless of how trivial this must have sounded to the manager, the moment I mentioned it to him he moved me to a room on a higher floor where I would not experience that particulatr noise anymore no questions asked.
I would highly recomment the Hotel Elegance 2 to anyone who is looking for a top notch hotel in Hanoi at a very reasonable rate.
I'll definitely stay with them again. I fact, I am. I travel back to Hanoi next week to catch my plane out and will spend a few more nights with them exploring the city.

Staff was 5-star quality, eager and capable. Manager was excellent. Arranged transportation was seamless.
Hopefully a one-off, but the people above us were very noisy. The floors are wooden, and perhaps foreign customers need to be gently reminded that in Southeast Asia one generally does not wear shoes inside a house or room.

Unless you are looking for a backpacker hostel, DO NOT stay there. The room was unlivable, the bathroom leaked from the roof, the shower means the whole bathroom gets wet with no extraction fan, the noise from the 8 or 12 beds downstairs means you can't sleep and when this is pointed out to the staff you get verbal abuse, the place is run by kids, you can do a lot better than this for $20 US.

A rather nondescript facade. You will probably just walk past this hotel if you were not specifically looking out for it. But once inside, it is a very different affair all together.
First off, I prebooked a Halong Bay Tour through this hotel. No hassles at all. Tried booking same tour through Handspan, but they required advance payment, which was really a hassle, since I was asked to faxed a photocopy of my credit card. The Elegance simply prebooked the tour for me without asking for any advance payment. Everything was based on trust.
The hotel room was a clean 3* room. Actually was pretty quiet. Nice touches such as fresh fruits daily, PC with free internet access, flower in vase made a difference from other hotels (although they only remembered the fruits on the first and last days of the stay).
Breakfast was a la carte. Good and hearty.
Location - no complaints. Right smack in the old quarter, in a fairly quiet street.
The service is 5* all round, from the doorman, the waiters, the counter staff to the hotel manager. Very friendly and helpful.
In summary, a 3* hotel with a 5* service which you can hardly find elsewhere.

My sister and I stayed at the Hotel Elegance in Feb. 2007. It was our first visit to Vietnam and our first hotel experience there. It was without a doubt the best place we stayed during our month in Vietnam. The management and staff looked after our every need, booked flights, trains, tours and with great efficiency and care. The rooms were comfortable, clean and we loved having access to internet in our room! What we most appreciated was the friendliness and great sense of humour of the staff, we have never been so warmly welcomed. On our last day we departed for Hanoi Station to take the overnight train, we had just gotten out of the cab when we saw the hotel manager pull up on his motor bike, he wanted to give us some sandwiches and fruit to take on the train as we'd been on a tour that day and hadn't had time to get anything to eat, he helped us with our luggage and accompanied us to the train. Incredible! We'll never forget the kindness and generousity of the fine management of Hotel Elegance. It's an experience we'll never forget.

I had a great stay at the Elegance - due in no small part to the staff who are without exception friendly, helpful and fun.
Had a room with its own computer/ADSL connection which came in handy. (Think this might only be in the superior rooms.)
I hope it says something that I would happily recommend this hotel despite the fact that they made a mistake with our booking meaning that we had to spend the first night of our stay at a (not very nice) hotel round the corner.

Cozy Hotel Wonderful Stay

My husband and I were visiting Vietnam for the first time in April 2007. We went through various website reviews to choose our accommodation and selected Hanoi Elegance due to the 100% positive review.
Our initial plan was to book Hanoi Elegance 2, which is newer. As it was fully booked, we took the recommendation to book into Hanoi Elegance 1.
Despite being in the midst of the hustle & bustle of Hanoi Old Town, the hotel was cozy and comfortable. Most importantly, Hanoi Elegance 1 has great staff who are friendly and courteous.
Arrangement of excursion, airport pick-up etc were handled perfectly. We had a truely pleasant stay and would definitely recommend it.

We stayed at this hotel at the start and end of our recent holiday in Vietnam. They sent a taxi to the airport to collect us and gave us a very warm welcome. The hotel was clean and very well managed by friendly but not too pushy staff. It is well situated right in the middle of the old quarter of Hanoi. We booked trips to both Halong Bay and Sapa and a flight to Danang all through the hotel. These trips worked out excellently with very punctual and reliable tour guides and transport. The hotel in Sapa was a bit poor - Sea Breeze - but I don't think that any of them are up to much. However, for one night we could put up with it and the trekking and scenery were fantastic. The hotel stored our luggage and gave us the use of a shower upon our return from these trips. I would recommend this hotel or Elegance 2 to anyone wanting a clean, modern hotel in the old quarter of Hanoi. Most of the rooms only have internal windows but at least this means peace and quiet from the noisy streets outside and the air con works extremely well. The staff at these hotels are certainly trying their very best to please and assist all their visitors.

I was so thankful to have stayed at the Hanoi Elegance on my first day in Vietnam. I am a single female traveller, and had one night pre-booked at another hotel around the corner, but the rooms and the staff at that place were less than satisfactory, even at $20 USD a night. Left a bit stranded in Hanoi, I walked into a cafe and noticed a hotel across the road, called 'Hanoi Elegance 2", they were booked out, but they took me to their other hotel around the corner called Hanoi Elegance. The room was huge, it appears that the walk in rate is $40 USD a night, which is a bit steep for me not sharing the costs, I told Binh at the reception that I couldn't afford $40 a night, so they took it down to $30 for me. Although charged me 10% tax at checkout time. I really didn't mind that because Binh and his offsider and all the other staff at this place are really nice and extremely honest people with great senses of humour, I was wary when I arrived 'cos I had heard all about scams so I thought these guys were too helpful, man was I wrong!
Unfortunately I had to check out the next day because they were full, Hanoi was very busy when I was there. I spent another 2 weeks in Vietnam travelling around, and this hotel was the best value for money, clean- spotless! The room was very nice, bed huge and comfortable, double glazing and airconditioned so, the noise was minimal. If it wasn't for the staff at the Hanoi Elegance hotel, I'm sure my whole holiday would have been completely different, they really were fantastic!
Unfortunately I had to check out the next day because they were full, Hanoi was very busy when I was there. Computer in every room?!

Slightly cheaper than the Elegance 2 but the staff are just as lovely and lively, rooms a (significant) cut above the average old quarter micro hotel with decent bathrooms. Very conveniently located as well. And like I said, a computer (yes that's right not wi-fi but an actual computer with internet access!!!) in every room. Fantastic.

It was the best experience we had in Vietnam. All the staff (from the managers to the cleaners) treated us with warmth and humour and generosity. They arranged most of our Vietnam transportation (2 train fares and an air fare) and daily transportation throughout the city. We felt very "looked after".
On our last day we arrived at the hotel from a tour and had very little time to get organized for the train. They called the tour operator to check on our progress and organized our luggage so we could make an efficicient departure. Elegant Experience in Hanoi

We just returned from a week in Hanoi, Vietnam of which 4 nights were spent at the Hanoi Elegance 1 Hotel at 8 Hang Bac St.
Having been fore-warned of shoddy hotels & shady tour operators by many of the postings on the TripAdvisor website, I was a little wary of what we might find. Instead, we were pleasantly surprised that most of what we experienced at the hotel. This, together with the warm welcome the staff gave us, more than made up for a couple of minor slipups that we encountered.
I was impressed when the hotel even called me 2 days before we arrive, to confirm our flight number as I had requested earlier by email, for airport pickup.
We were a fairly large group which included 3 children and two grandparents and had requested for 2 superior rooms and a 3 bedded family room.
In our first stay of 3 nights, we were given 1 middle room on the 1st floor and 2 rooms on the 2nd floor (with traditional Vietnamese carved beds & furniture). Each floor has only 3 rooms.
The wardrobe reminded me of the Wardrobe in the movie "The Chronicles of Narnia"! Having fresh fruit & flowers in our room daily was a thoughtful touch, and the breakfast choice each morning of either Vietnamese beef pho (noodle soup) or Western breakfast was more than sufficient.
The kids were delighted that there was a PC with free internet access provided in every room!
The location of the hotel was very convenient, about 5-10min walk to Hoan Kiem Lake. The hotel purchased seats for us at the Water Puppet Theatre for no extra charge.
We also went on a 3 day 2night Halong Bay junk cruise pre-booked via email with the hotel. Upon arrival at the hotel, they recommended that we change to a different tour company & junk (Imperial Junk with Vietnam Open Tours) from what we had originally booked. They said they had received more favourable feedback regarding this cruise, and it was at the same price that we had booked at USD80 per person. Initially, I was a little wary, but after experiencing this tour, I have no complaints regarding this changeover and found it to be of good value.
Upon our return from Halong Bay, we were given 1 superior room on the 1st floor for the grandparents, and a superior room & a large deluxe room with 3 single beds with modern furnishing on the 4th floor. Despite the hike up the stairs, the 2 rooms on the top floor were ideal, as they were the only 2 rooms on this level with more privacy.
Perhaps the only minor slipups we encountered were:
- Laundry that we sent for washing, came back still rather damp. This was probably because the weather was drizzling most of the time, and they did not use clothes dryers for drying.
- Upon checkout, the hotel added 10% to our bill for govt tax, which was not mentioned earlier during our reservation emails or on their website. At first I didn't notice this, and paid it, but on the way to the airport (via their arranged transport) I saw it on our bill and called back to check with the hotel. At first they said it was clearly stated on their website that room rates were subject to govt tax. But when I clarified that it was not mentioned in our reservation emails nor had I noticed it on their website (I found out after we got home, it was only mentioned on the website for their Hanoi Elegance 2 hotel), they agreed to refund the amount through the van driver which they did.
I think this demonstrated the sincerity & integrity this hotel & their staff have towards their guests and their willingness to accomodate or rectify any situations that arose. We would not hesitate to recommend a stay for anyone at Hanoi Elegance 1.

But when I clarified that it was not mentioned in our reservation emails nor had I noticed it on their website (I found out after we got home, it was only mentioned on the website for their Hanoi Elegance 2 hotel), they agreed to refund the amount through the van driver which they did.
I think this demonstrated the sincerity & integrity this hotel & their staff have towards their guests and their willingness to accomodate or rectify any situations that arose. We would not hesitate to recommend a stay for anyone at Hanoi Elegance 1.
A five star experience at budget prices

I'm writing this review from the computer in the room at the Hanoi Elegance Hotel. We've been travelling in SE Asia for over a month and this is the first hotel we've encountered with a computer and internet service free inside the room.
We initially stayed for one night at the Old Street Hotel, but one night was more than enough. So, we found this hotel and for only a few dollars more we have a much nicer room and super friendly and helpful staff.
We would highly recommend this hotel, clean, new rooms, decent linens and a computer in the room. The room has hardwood floors, good lighting, comfortable duvet and nice furnishings. The only complaint would be the hard bed.
The staff has been especially great, they are super friendly and willing to help in whatever way they can.

Water Puppets Unless you're struggling for something to do with your time, give the puppets a miss, it's rather average.
Getting around Hanoi When crossing a road in Hanoi, pick your time (usually best to wait until there are no cars, only mopeds) then cross slowly but purposefully. If you wait for a space, you'll be there all day. The mopeds will steer around you, but look at them when you cross to make sure they see you. If you hesitate or step back, you might confuse the driver who's already planned how to get round you. They are more likely to hit each other than hit you, when trying to avoid you. When getting a taxi, get a small bubble like taxi or a Hanoi state taxi as there are some companies who will charge you almost double, even when on the meter.
