Mrs Moon!

After reading many fantastic reviews we had intended on staying at the Golden Sun upon arrival in Hanoi, however they were booked out. After two nights at a noisy guesthouse (and 2 visits to Golden Sun) we secured a room there. The service from all staff is so genuinely friendly and the room we had on the fifth floor, was really inviting with good quality furnishings.
Pros: Mrs Moon & her staff are just lovely; breakfast (whilst not an extensive menu) was quite enjoyable - especially sitting in the 7th floor breakfast room looking out over Hoan Kiem Lake; our room was spotless and really bright and relaxing; balcony; elevator; shower pressure & bathroom were great, no noise issues.
Cons: for lack of anything else room was on the small side.
I would definitey recommend this guest house - it is more like a boutique hotel.

Golden Sun arranged to pick us up at the airport ahead of time, the hotel seemed clean and the staff very nice. It was full with folks that "did not leave on their tours" so no rooms were available for our stay ($28 USD/ngt). We were given the choice of a nicer room at the Win Hotel down the street ($30 USD) or another cheaper hotel ($15). We took Win, very nice rooms and staff.
Both Golden Sun and Win had free internet. The breakfast was served at Golden Sun and we were given a very good breakfast both mornings, though we only stayed one night. They also held onto our backpacks.

12 of us just returned from Hanoi the Golden Sun Hotel is excellence for service,clean rooms and good location.Mrs Moon were incredibly helpful,speak and write good english she will reply all your e-mail in quick time,she got a good term of staffs,one of the staff Ms Thao was simply wonderful made us feel pampered and completely taken care our need arrangement to Halong Bay and Sapa is magnificent.This is my fourth stay in the hotel,I will surely come back for more to Golden Sun to see Mrs Moon and visit the sea Halong Bay /Sapa with five star rating

I booked the hotel online on hostelweb.com for a family of 4
and had a cosy and comfortable stay here. However when we arrived on our first night they did not have a room for us, even though we had a confirmed reservation. They put us in a hotel just a few steps down the road from their hotel, which was very clean and cosy as well. When we came back to Hanoi a few days later, we were given a room in Golden Sun.
The receptionist and the attending boys are all helpful! Rooms are very clean and reasonbly equipped, with water heater, tv, fridge. Location is very good, very close proximity to Hoan kiem lake (5 mins walk) and to old quarter (5 mins too!) .
Even after we've checked out for the day and while waiting for our train to depart later in the evening, the staffs allowed us to shower and kept our baggages safely.
The cafe on the top flr of the hotel has an awesome view of Hoan Kiem and the old quarter.

We had booked the Golden Sun hotel far in advance over the internet. They arranged the airport pickup for us, but when we arrived they did not have a room free for that night. Since it was late and we were tired after the flight, we agreed to stay in a hotel "of a friend" that night and return the next morning for breakfast and for moving to the Golden Sun.
The other hotel was cheaper but rooms were run down and a bit dirty. Altogether not a hotel I would stay normally.The next day we moved after having breakfast.
The breakfast room is on the 7th floor with a great view over Hoan Kiem Lake and the breakfast was ok.
The room itself was nicely furnished and clean as was the bathroom. During the stay the cleaning was not too intensive and the stains of the cockroaches remained on the floor tiles.
In the evening the hotel suffers a bit from the way it is built with a central staircase and we could hear the visits that the receptionist received as well his TV programs.

Fantastic Place to stay in Hanoi

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights just before Christmas and we absolutely loved it. The rooms are small, but incredibly clean, nicely decorated with great bathrooms and nice hot showers. Lots of character in this place.
The staff are super helpful, and you can't beat the location - right in the heart of the Old Quarter. About a 10 minute walk from the Water Puppet Theater, among other Hanoi attractions. We've since recommended it to a number of friends who have all loved it.
We would stay here again for sure.

booked a two night stay (with a night in halong bay in between). room was ok if a little depressing. the manager was very friendly and helpful with sorting out trips etc.
after returning from halong bay was told they'd overbooked and would take me to their 'sister hotel' which i naively agreed to. turned out to be out of the main area but more importantly, the room was pretty dirty. it was a few dollars cheaper but certainly not worth the saving.

The staff makes all the difference in the world at the Golden Sun. Mrs. Moon is one of those fresh personalities you come across only once in a blue moon. Tremendously helpful, friendly, and entertaining.
The rooms have all that you would need, clean, but a little small.
Actually, when we left we were going to the train station and Mrs. Moon sent one of the staff with us to help us onto the train.
Also, the hotel is located at a great location.

We enjoyed our stay at the Golden Sun. Our flight arrived very late but our pre-arranged driver was at the airport. The hotel is clean, quite new and staff very helpful. The location is near the lake and in the old party of Hanoi.
Top Local Tips for Hanoi
Taxis and transportation. Make sure your taxi has a meter that ticks with the distance travelled, not every couple of seconds.We travelled a lot onthe back of motor bikes usually a dollar a tripo anwhere around town.
Get up early The best time to go to Hoam Kiem lake is at daybreak, 6 a.m. onwards as the locals are all out doing Tai Chi, playing badminton etc around the lake and there are no sellers constantly harrassing you to buy stuff. Its the only time of day you can enjoy a walk around the lake without being bothered once!
Self Organised Tours Importnat to note that most tourist attractions around Hanoi are closed on Mondays- take every opportunity to talk to the locals, you can learn so much.
