Top Local Tips for Hanoi
Gourmet dining in Hanoi There is a new restaurant, Verticale, opened by a Frenchman named Didier who is the former Exec.Chef at the Sofitel Metropole in Hanoi, that is as good as any French restaurant certainly in Southeast Asia, perhaps Manhattan as well. The restaurant is charming in a modern, monotone, zen way, the service impeccable, and the food incredible. It is not cheap by SE Asian standards, but a real bargain by European standards. Didier also runs a spice shop on the first floor, and he is happy to let you smell various spices and explain how best to use them.
Taxi Scam I was warned but yet i was cheated by a taxi driver. From Ho Chi Minh Masoluem to Hao Lo Prison is very near and it was very obvious he turned one extra circle to go there and the meter was obviously being modified to jump faster. When taking taxi, look out for those in better condition with taxi numbers and company name on the car body. I was being charged 200,000 dong for such a short distance and was very angry with it. If in doubt and need help, approach those official as they are usually friendly to help.
