Historical Traveller Reviews of Furama Resort Da Nang Hotel

s true... nice hotel, but worse service in Asia

from gatorgirl123
OK, well I didn't want to write this review, but the resort made me. We went to Furama b/c friends we were meeting said it was their favorite resort in Asia. They were there a few years ago and just loved it. So off we went although I was a little concerned with the reviews on the website. (after leaving their impression has changed also).

When we checked in my husband said, "You are totally wrong, this place is amazing!". Which was true of our first impression. The facialitiies are great. Great pool, beach with no shells, tennis courts, etc. The longer we stayed (5 nights) the more our rating of the hotel went down. The service was the worst we experianced in Asia. For example, if you are suppose to be a 5+ star beach hotel, then it is important to have pool service. Something small, but if you wanted a drink during the day it was like asking a huge favor to have someone come by to get a drink. (then it took 20 mins to bring it over). Yes, you could get up and walk over the bar and place your order, but the purpose of being on vacation is to relax and enjoy and not jump up every five mins. With a group of 6 this was something we found very annonying and not what we expected for a 5 star hotel.

My suggestion would be to try another hotel in the area. This one will not be on our list to go back to.

On a positive note, the prices of drinks were reasonable ($2 for a soda, $4 for a beer) no matter if you were at the restaurant or from the mini-bar :)

Furama Resot

This is an excellent choice if you are willing to pay 5+ times the amount of a comfortable hotel in the area. The rooms are excellent, staff very helpful, food reasonable (10USD/meal). If you are looking for a relaxing stay in which everything is taken care for you this would be ideal.

Fabulous location, great rooms, poor service

from UKHoT_Traveller
Location fabulous on the beach front, choice of pools. Rooms very good but what you expect for the money. Vietnam pricing is suspended as soon as you walk through the door - they sure no how to charge the prices to suit the obvious non local tourists.

Service and food in the restaurants is woeful. Other reviews talk about choice from the buffet but the quality is poor for a hotel of this standard and price.

Reception, restaurant and bar staff can be surly (perhaps it's a cultural misunderstanding but I have lived in Asia for 3 years and it didn't come across elsewhere) and frustratingly obvious and pedantic about small things - the customer is usually wrong appears to be the mantra.

Perhaps the conspicuous abscence of any senior managers suggests that this is a resort hotel with a purpose of extracting as much cash from the consumer rather than generating a real sense of being a 'guest'

nevertheless we would go back although the newly openend Nam Hoi will be a big pull and much needed competition. the food thing is easily overcome - jump in a cab (US $9) / hotel shuttle to Hoi An and enjoy fabulous Vietnam food at a fraction of the hotel cost.

great

This hotel is very tranquil, with beautiful gardens, and beach front views. The rooms are large and all amenities provided. The room service is excellent and the resturant is very good with resonable prices for a resort.
Lots of water activites. The only downfall is not enough resturants and shops in the close vacinty.
PS. The people in vietnam are adorable and honest.

Plush resort on China beach

from forego
We decided to visit Danang mainly due to the attraction of Hoi An, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. We also thought a brief respite surfside from our trek would be a nice break. The Furama Resort on China Beach was terrific. We had a wonderful room overlooking the beach and were able to sleep at night with french doors ajar (screen doors to keep insects out) to the sounds of the surf. The surfside room had a king size bed and the bathroom was spacious and modern. The rooms could use some paintings. The hotel has two pools, one overlooking the beach and an interior garden area pool with beautiful landscaping. Breakfast buffet was superb with American, Asian and European selections. You could lunch on the beach among the palm trees (so plenty of shaded spots for non-sun worshippers like me). For runners out there I did a five mile loop along the beach without runnning shoes and it felt great. Dinner was adequate, not great, but there are pool tables, cocktail lounges, a spa and fitness center (which could be upgraded) and a tennis court for other entertainment. I imagine in peak season it must be even more delightful - weatherwise, but of course a lot more crowded. We had lots of clouds with peakaboo sun and the surf was too rough for swimming for all but a brief period, though they have available a surf shop when the ocean is a bit friendlier. As with every location we visited in Vietnam, the hotel employees were very friendly and more than willing to help. Hoi An was too much on souvenir shops, which took away from the beauty of the architecture, but the Japanese covered bridge was worth the visit as was the market place on the riverbank. I was more impressed with Marble Mountain, that was 5 minutes from the Furama, but to be fair we did not delve to deep in Hoi An as it was raining. All locations could be visited courtesy of the Furama shuttle bus. Hope this helps!

Spacious resort

from dublintraveller100
We stayed two very wet days/nights in January in this large five star seaside resort, well located for visitors to Danang and the nearby World Heritage sites of Hoi An and My Son. Our room and bathroom were both oversized and well equipped and had a large balcony with a view over the sand to the sea. The two pool areas look as if they would be beautiful in good weather. The beach is substantial with lots of white sand. The public areas are spacious and the staff we met (mainly in the restaurants) were competent and friendly. The food was good without being memorable. We had to flee the bar area to escape live music which drowned any conversation. While physically excellent, the hotel seemed to lack 'charm' but we did see it in very poor weather. Recommended.

Beautiful grounds... OK room.

from Spivman
We had a nice stay here... but it was absolutely empty in December. Their breakfast was quite amazing and delicious.

The hotel was fully staffed at what must be the low-point of their low-season. The staff was helpful, but we ended up arguing with them over the total amount we owed: we booked via a promotion on their online site which they didn't want to honour. Highly recommend getting them to put into writing when you check in exactly what you will be paying.

The rooms are nice.. the bathrooms are quite gorgeous and modern. The beds could be softer though, and the appointments could be a little more modern -- furniture and art is a bid tired.

Good free shuttle into Hoi An... to do it again, I might stay closer to Hoi An, or make sure we're there during better weather. Great pools!

Seven Page Bill - Says It all really...

from Pincut
Like other reviewers, we found some of the staff a bit snooty. Everyone at the pool, beach, in the bars and in the restaurants were lovely. But the front of house people, especially at reception, were a bit condescending and rude.

To illustrate - we had booked a pickup at Danang airport on arrival (don't bother by the way; it's a 5 minute ride; there are hundreds of taxis waiting at the airport; and the metered fare is less than 10% of what the hotel charges). At check in, when I pointed out that it hadn't shown up at the airport, the response was 'well you didn't book one!' So I showed the confirmation email, to which the response was 'well you didn't give us a flight number! How are we supposed to know when to come to the airport?!' So I highlighted the flight arrival info, including flight number, in the confirmation email. To which the response was 'well it isn't in our system! It was never confirmed to you!' So I highlighted the 'Thank you for booking your airport transfer with the Furama Resort. This is your confirmation....' in the confirmation email.

I don't really appreciate having to argue with people about stuff like this. I'd have much rather heard 'I'm sorry, our mistake' and we could all have moved on.

Also similarly to other reviewers, we found a real 'nickel and dime' approach which kind of spoiled things a bit. On practically every amenity in the rooms was a sign which read 'this belongs to the hotel - if you want one, ask reception' - I'm not just taking about bathrobes, but ice buckets, stationery, everything. All that was missing was the 'if you break it, you pay for it' sign.

The setting is nice - good beach, but with an alarming amount of used condoms and wrappers on either side of the beach, apart from the main drag directly in front of the hotel.

In 5 days, we had an internet bill of $60 - from maybe around 5 visits periodically to check emails - which on a nightly room rate of $475 was a bit of a cheek, I thought.

Sure, they have a business to run, but like plenty of other places, this felt more like an expensive transaction where you pay cash for the right to sleep somewhere for a while - and then more cash for every other element of your transaction - rather than a pleasant experience, where you happily pay to be looked after and enjoy yourself on your trip.

A really beautiful resort

from Carman_2006
The Furama Resort is really a wonderful place for those who visits Vietnam for relaxing after too may days working hard. The morning breakfast is good, more of choices. Our room is overlooking the swimming pool and garden view but it is really nice. We cannot not say anymore but say thanks to all staff at the hotel and beautiful beach which help us spend a great holiday here. We are surely come back to Vietnam again especially to Furama.

Posh but clinical?

from noodlegirl
I'm a little torn with this one. I loved the hotel itself, but as another reviewer pointed out, it's a 5-star hotel with 2-or 3-star everything else. The room rates were reasonable given the physical accomodations and location but I was really taken aback by the food. The food was priced double to triple American prices and I have had waaaay better Vietnamese food in Orange County's Little Saigon for less than half the cost. I had expected better from a "resort." My first night there, I was attacked by mosquitoes from head-to-toe, so that really made the rest of my weeklong stay uncomfortable, but I'll blame that on nature. If you plan on staying at Furama but want a stellar meal worthy of its $$, head to Apsara. Best garlic lobster and calamari I've ever had.

But back to Furama ... gorgeous grounds, but I think there's a huge gap in its impressive physique and service/culinary offerings. The staff was cordial, but not warm and at times we felt as if we were in a posh but sterile clinic or something.

Top Local Tips for Da Nang

bEACH Visit HUE, Hoi An, My Son. There is nothing in Da Nang except Cham Museum.

expensive eating out

Phang Nha caves If you are traveling in the Hue area we would recommend a day outing to see the Phang Nha caves, about 2 hours from central Hue. I would suggest hiring a car and driver to the boat departure place for transport by small boat up river to the caves and into the caves by same boat to see all the beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. Fantastic. i was the only "visible" foreigner to the caves and was greeted with big smiles and hand waves.
