Confirmed Booking - No Room for 2 1/2 Daysfrom 1holidayqueen
The pool while lovely had around 60 sun beds around it. The pool boys would put out towels and books on all of the chairs around 6am in the morning and hold chairs for guests that didn't come along until 3pm in the afternoon - we later found out that they were receiving payment from guests to do this - it wasn't fun sitting on the concrete when you paid for 4 1/2* luxury.
The power went out about 7 times during our stay and we had no hot water for 3 days. The hotel also chased us down at the pool for an hour trying to get us to pay a bill that another couple had put their own name on and signed for a week before hand but checked out already. It seemed they put the bill in the wrong slot when they did the room charges. Beers here cost around 140 baht + 17% taxes, soft drinks 120 baht. If you go into the 7 eleven in Patong they are around 35 baht and 17 baht respectively. You expect some mark up but the fact the hotel is so isolated they really have you cornered.
The bus into Patong ran three times a day every six hours - 9am, 3pm and 9pm which wasn't frequent enough. The men at the top of the road would take you down there after some hard bargaining for 200 baht. Tours to Fantasy show are awesome - the hotel charge 1950 baht including show and transfers but you can book them in Patong for 1300 baht if you barter.
We travel overseas ever six months and expect some hiccups along the way. This was our worst experience ever and has put a really negative spin on what should have been a wonderful relaxing holiday. If you do choose to stay here and want a hillside villa make sure you don't get one that ends in a 01 number ie. 2101, 2201, 3101, 3201, 4101, 4201, 5101, 5201, 6101, 6201. They are right on the side of the cable car track and all you can hear all night is thump, thump, thump, thump ever 30 seconds.
This resort has the potential to be awesome - a chain like Sheraton or Hilton with some money to spend and management experience would really make this a 5* destination. The pool was beautiful and the Day Spa awesome. It is such a shame the rest of the place didn't live up to expectations.

Perfect location - 3*+from Alice_who
All in all the hotel needs some renovating and they could also take it a bit easier on food and beverage prices – they charge up to 4-times more than (good) restaurants in Patong. The second minus is for the beach – it looks perfect but you actually can’t swim since tie is very intensive and a coral riff makes it impossible to go into water. (the only choice is a pier left from the hotel). But just rent a motorcycle and for 200 THB (4EUR) per day you can visit any beach you like. Only 5 min by bike to Kamala.
Sensational location, services and facilitiesfrom boysbythebeach
The hotel location was fantastic, not too far away from Patong if you wanted to go out, but far enough away to be peaceful. The Ocean view villas are the way to go. Private, good size and well layed out bathrooms.
Will def be returning to this property. Fantastic
Lots of Smiles-nothing worksfrom allan1949
Airconditioning in room broke three times in 4 days.
Food offered in buffet has no signs so it is a guessing game.
The spa is very very expensive.
Room not cleaned unless one begs.
English proficiency severely lacking.
Great place to really chill outfrom titounet
Breakfast was great by the pool which is unlike any pool we have seen. Swimming is like being in the jungle with little coves and it never feels crowded as it is so big. Also very clean and safe. The staff is just so friendly and attentive anticipating all our needs and requests. Only my mother is more tuned in to my needs. We felt really pampered by genuinely caring people.
We arrived when the tide was low and we felt dissapointed by the look of the beach and I crossed off swimming in the sea but the next morning with the high tide a perfect tropical beach appeared and we had the best swims as unlike were we live there is no surf, no crocs, no sharks and no other nasties. We snorkelled of the beach at high tide, just great!!!!! They have lots of comfortable lounge chairs by the pool and the beach under coconut trees so no problems finding the perfect spot everyday.
It was just perfect. Ate in Patong as cheaper and great night life. Used the shuttle service most of the time but tuk tuk only cost 150 to 200 Baths depending on your bargaining skills.
Flawed Paradise...........from JG007
First the flaws.
We booked a beach bungalow, looking for a little bit of tropical heaven. Unfortunately it didn't quite follow our pre-conceptions. All the bungalows are right next to the beach, good, but also bad as they look dated and 'jaded' compared to the poolside and hillside villa's, constantly exposed to the elements as they are.
The bungalows are reasonably furnished but don't come with a safe, the villa's do, we could not understand this as the bungalows (particularly at night) feel 'isolated', this feeling is compounded by the noise of the sea breaking on the beach, at high tide it is loud enough to prevent you falling asleep. The paths leading to the bungalows are not particularly well lit at night, again raising security concerns.
The problem of the safe was overcome by using a safety deposit box which are available in reception. So our passports and money were safe but items such as iPods, PSP's, sunglasses etc, things that we would normally put in a room safe when we went out, we had to leave in the room as it was simply not practical to journey to reception every time we wanted to use or secure these items. So every time we ventured out for the evening we did so with the knowledge that our valubles were 'exposed'. We did debate wether to upgrade to one of the villa's but decided to keep our money for the shopping in Patong.
The biggest problem we found with the beach bungalows was the unwelcome guests, ants! They were an ever present 'feature' of our stay here. No matter how careful we were not to leave anything that might attract them, they could always be seen on the floor and in the bathroom, not huge plagues of them, but enough to make you think, ' I didn't pay for this!'.
Finally on the flaws for our accomodation, we had to change rooms one hour after arriving, just as we had unpacked everything I decided to freshen up with a shower, I didn't expect to be cascaded with green water! Even after running the shower for 5 minutes the water was still green. So the suitcases were packed again, we informed reception of our water 'problem' and 4 hours later we finally unpacked in our second beach bungalow. Not a good start and this was before the ants!
Now the paradise.
Despite their many flaws, the beach bungalows were literally 'on the beach'. It was great to look out of the window and see golden sand, clear blue sea and sun kissed palm trees.
As the resort is a ten minute tuk tuk ride away from Patong Beach then the beach is incredibly quiet, with just the guests using it. It is a large boomerang shaped beach, with soft golden sand, full of interesting shells, non of it man-made and it throws a nice dilema, beach or pool?
The pool (lagoon is a more accurate description) is in my opinion the best feature of this resort and one of the main reasons I have given Thavorn four stars despite our accomodation issues. Its a magnificent piece of landscaping, a huge lagoon with little 'canals' that our great to swim down, small bridges that cross it in various places, its lined with palm tress, has waterfalls, a swim-up bar, all in all the best pool I have ever seen in any hotel. The poolside villa's have a small patio and a gate which when opened allows the guest to enter the pool, true paradise! The pool is great to swim in, play sport in, (it has water-polo and volleyball facilities) or just simply lie back and gaze at its wonderous beauty.
There are three restaurants and a bar that all offer poolside views, wether eating or drinking, it really is the central feature of this resort and you won't be dissapointed.
Food at the Thavorn is of a very high standard, there is a Thai restaurant, Japanese and one that offers western and eastern cuisine. We ate once in the Thai restaurant, the meal was lovely, but a little pricey. We prefered to eat in nearby Patong were the food was sensational. Italian, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Western, all could be found here in great restaurants. I have been to Thailand three times and the food in Patong was the best we have ever had.
After a day relaxing by the pool, Patong is were to head at night and not just for the food. Its full of shops, bars and clubs as well. Have a drink and watch the 'lady-boys' offer to have their photo's taken with you, they do have to be seen to be believed! Yes their is a seedy side to Patong (like most Thai tourist destinations) but its only there if you want it or look for it, its not 'forced' on you.
The shopping is great in Patong and I had eight shirts handmade for me at Everest Tailors (The manager Ronny speaks great English and provided great service) they are great quality and cost me half what I would have paid in the UK. Patong is the place where the Tsunami came ashore in Phuket, it has recovered well but their is a morbid fascination when you see road signs that say 'Tsunami evacuation route 100m' and an arrow pointing the way in the event that anything similar ever happens again.
Incidently the beach at the hotel was not affected at all by the Tsunami, yet ten minutes down the road in Patong it caused devestation. Despite this, the events of December 26th 2004 would not stop me returning to Phuket.
To sum up (finally!) I would actually stay at the Thavorn Beach Resort And Spa again, however I would choose one of the poolside or hillside villa's. They are newer, more comfortable and offer greater amenities. The location of the hotel is ideal for relaxing by day then heading off for some 'action' at night in Patong! The staff were wonderful, particularly in the restaurant that served breakfast, we have promised them we are going to return next year! The landscaping and pool 'lagoon' are breathtaking and this would probably be the decisive factor in booking this amazing hotel again............
Nice, but...from One_big_holiday
I agree that it's good to be away from the madness of Patong. It's only about 200 THB to get a tuktuk there, so there's no need to pay the crazy resort prices for food and drinks.
We had requested a pool access room but were told they were booked out by the travel agent. We asked about it on arrival and got the same response. There were at least 10 empty pool rooms for the entire length of our stay, so we're not sure why this request was refused.
That left us with the ocean view room that we booked (up the cable car). Nice view of the tree but no ocean. We called reception and asked for an alternative. That was simple and they handled this well. I did feel embarrassed to ask as I don't normally make a fuss about rooms.
The novelty of the cable car wore off after just one day, but the view was amazing. I'd recommend a pool view room (if you can't get pool access) instead of ocean view. The beach villas looked a bit average.
The general facilities are limited compared to other properties. The pool is nice, and the beach is nice to sit on but difficult for swimming.
Overall it was ok but we probably won't book this resort again.
A very nice stayfrom TheCoff
We booked into a beach bungalow and on arrival found that these rooms do not really match the hotel. They are very basic and small. They are located right on the private beach which is nice but we felt there could be security concerns so we upgraded our room to a poolside suite.
This was what we were looking for, a good size room and balcony with a great bathroom.
The hotel is about 10 minutes from Patong and has no restaurants or shops nearby so without an easy alternative the hotel uses this opportunity to really hike up their food and beverage prices. This is a shame as the food in the hotel restaurants is good but we tended to go into Patong to eat every night just on principle.
If you love swimming in the sea then this isnt the hotel for you.

Hotel Impiana Phuket Cabana look like very new and designed and has a quite bu top central beach location
taxis/tuk tuks as regular visitors to Thailand we found Phuket to be expensive for taxis/tuk tuks. Tho hiring a moped was very good value. Watch police tho' they stop tourists daily!!! make sure to wear helmets all the time and carry your licence or they will fine you
