Not a great hotel - not even for families

Laguna Beach resort was suppose to be dlx 5 star, but it didn't feel like one, not in facilities, rooms, food or room. We stayed in the newly renovated premier deluxe rooms. The rooms were dark and dank and still look old and run down( despite the new renovations). The bathroom was badly designed, the glass shower screen was too narrow and does little to prevent water from splashing all over the bathroom, water flowed from around the bathtub and flooded the floor. The seaview was almost non exisistent as there are many huts of beach vendors, that almost totally obliterated the view (and we are already on the 3rd floor), for rooms on the 4th floor, the view would be blocked by the trees, so it is defintely not worth paying for a seaview. Breakfast selection was poor and was exactly the samefor the 3 days that we were there. The waterpark isn't as great as it looks on the website ... this is the first hotel that we had ever stayed at where our kids didn't even ask to go to the pool.
Service was not 5 star either. there were hardly any smiles all around. and 1 bell hop refused to give us a tag for our luggage when we had to check out earlier and leave our luggage with them while we waited for our airport transfer, Becos, he was knocking off before our transport arrived, and he realised that he may not get the tip for helping us with the lugguage (he made this clear when he muttered that he was knocking off).
The only bright spot in service was the guest relations officer, who was very helpful when I needed to get medication for my daughter. And Anna the resident elephant.

The free night promotion was not worth-it. The bill can only be paid using credit cards if it is paid in BHT, but the rates were charged in USD, so that means anyone using credit card would suffer multiple rates conversions and what you see is not what you paid. For 5 star hotel like Laguna Beach, to be only able to pay in BHT but charged in USD...was rather unexpected... Its not a hotel I would stay at again..nor recommend to any friend.

Dont book the family plan

from becks69
We travelled with 2 adults and 2 children 8 & 10 yrs old, after looking at all the hotels in the area we decided on this one because of the facilitys for the kidz. We booked the family plan which basicly is 4 people sharing a substandard twin room. As you walk into the hotel there is a board explaining that they are doing some refurb work but what they don't tell you is that the room that you get has not been refurbed yet and is a twin room not a room for 4 people. It was impossible to sleep because the beds are for single people. The room size is ok for a family of midgets,(that remark is in no having a dig at the small people)but when i pay 5* prices and stay in a 5* hotel i dont expect a 3* room. After complaining to the booking agent and the hotel we got the usual response if we want a room big enough for 4 people we would have to pay an extra $100 per night. I did not come all this way to be stripped up. I got on the internet and found a very nice hotel up the road which is on the beech, the rooms are fresh and newly refurbed. We also have 2 conecting rooms, 1 with 2 single beds and the other with a king size bed. I must say these rooms are 10 times better and a fraction of the price. We should have been staying from the 28th July till the 11th August but 3 days were enough. Your loss Laguna Beech Resort as i have serveal friends and family waiting to book hoildays in Phuket, but your hotel will not be the one where they stay.

Great with a young family

from A TripAdvisor Member
My family went to Laguna Beach in May '06 after it was recommended by a work colleague and had a great holiday.

My two young children (age 5 and 2) loved feeding 'Anna the Elephant' after breakfast every morning. Resort is well set up for children (kids club, child meals, water slide, big rooms). Staff were helpful and friendly, arranging a personalised birthday cake for my son's birthday and reservations at resturants off the resort. It was also good to be able to use some of the facilities at the other hotels on the complex.

Hopefully we will be able to go back again one day.

Relaxing place to unwind

from KHG3068
We arrived in Laguna Beach Resort from Australia via Malaysia. We had a very relaxing stay over three nights, four days.

The resort is quite large with three pools and access to a beach and lagoon. The pools are suitable for children (shallow and a small but entertaining pool slide) as well as adults (spa, poolside bar and greater depth).

The resort is about 10 - 20 km away from the main tourist beach and is much quieter. The resort is obviously primarily geared towards conferences and family centred holidays but during our time there (June 06) there was only a small 20+ conference and <10 families.

Food is very good with particular compliments to the on-site Thai restaurant. Other resorts border the lagoon and there are other restaurants to try there as well. Room service is prompt and friendly. Breakfast is buffet style and there is a wide variety of European, Korean and Thai style foods.

On site gym contains relatively new equipment (treadmill, stationary bike and weights etc)

The rooms are a bit tired and some wings are currently undergoing renovation but are otherwise spacious, clean and confortable.

There is also a baby elephant (Anna) that walks around the resort with its handler and is a hit with both kids and adults.

My wife and I arrived from Kuwait, needless to say we were rather wound up. In less than a day we were relaxed and our troubles seemed to have floated away. The staff at the hotel could not have been nicer and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The Italian restaurant over at the Sheraton is one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at. Try the seafood Rizzotto (spelling). The pool was clean, the bar staff at the pool bar was great ask for Tony. Tell him you want a frozen mango margaritta and then sit back and think how lucky you are.
I must mention it is very entertaining to be engrossed in a Robert Ludlum novel , look up, and see a baby elephant pass not three feet in front of you by the pool.
The surf is too rough to swim in during June but you can easily find other activities to keep you amused, if you cant go see Tony he can help.

Having stayed in Fiji last year, that we absolutely loved, this year we decided against returning (after much debate) & made the decision to visit Thailand. With so many choices and after much research, we decided on the laguna beach area. We were orginally going to choose the Sheraton but after studying this web site (which we found most useful) we chose Laguna Beach Resort. We were not disappointed. We travelled with our two children, aged 4 & 6. Our room was overlooking the lagoon and we found it comfortable for our needs. The hotel was not at a very high occupancy which we found to be great for us as we had the staff to ourselves. The children thoroughly enjoyed the kids club & all the staff we encounted made an effort to get to know the children by name ( that is staff all around the hotel). We found the pool area tremendous. The children couldn't get enough & if there were no children in the kids club the staff would come out & have fun with our children by the pool anyway! We had breakfast each day in cafe loma which we found to be good variety & very fresh (great birchermuseili). We used the pool bar for lunch as it was easy to feed the kids & ate in the Thai restaurant on one night. All food we encountered in the resort was of good quality & delicious. All other meals we ate outside the resort along the beach - Tom Yam Goong, Lotus, Green Leaf and various in Patong. All good and extremely cheap, much cheaper than the hotel (however, we still felt the price on the hotel food was not outrageous). We liked the quietness of the resort and were happy to travel to Patong when required without living amongst the hustle & bustle.
Anna, the elephant, was the highlight on everyday for our children especially as they didn't have the share her with too many children due to low occupancy. My husband enjoyed the golf course & we looked around the other resorts and were still happy with our choice. We would highly recommend to anyone visiting Phuket.

Wonderful holiday

from semarroy
We stayed for 1 week with our 2 children (4 & 9) - stayed in a 2 bedroom suite which gave us plenty of space. DVD and free rentals were great in the evenings. Staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for you. Swimming pool was great, the top pool with goals and basketballs was perfect. Hotel was 85% full but never felt crowded. Had 2 spa treatments - what an experience, massage overlooking the lagoon - very relaxing. Restaurants were good - but the one's on the beach were cheaper and you get to eat with sand at your feet overlooking sunset. Found a small jamaican style bar on the beach selling drinks for 100 baht - great atmosphere. Archery was a big hit with our family - great fun. Elephant trek was fun too. Took a trip out on a speedboat and went snorkelling around Coral Island. Only set back was a problem with the kids club - but management dealt with it swiftly. Just a magical magical holiday.

Loved Laguna

from jenso
We spent our second part of our Phuket holiday at Laguna Beach Resort in Bang Tao. Our first stay was at Karon Beach.
Although we did feel we were a little trapped within the laguna complex and we missed the 'local village' feel, we did relax and make the most of all the activities the resort has to offer. The beach isn't as inviting as Karon Beach, but it was still nice. The rooms aren't big, but we spent so much time out of our room anyway.
We loved the restaurants set up on the beach. Dining as the sun set, sipping on cocktails..with 3 kids,... was still wonderful...our favourite was Tom Yam Goong. The breakfast was good at Fruit de la Sea(I think) a few shacks down, my son loved the pineapple pancakes.
The waterslide, pool and elephant were a big hit with our kids and they also enjoyed the Kids club. The stalls and taxis were twice the price of karon beach so I'd advise people to shop elsewhere. I'm glad we stayed at Karon Beach as well, as this gave our children a better idea of what Phuket is really like...we did alot of day trips from there. It is difficult to leave the complex unless you have a trip organised or take a pricey taxi. They could really do with a shuttle to the next beach or village. However, if you are there just to relax and soak up the sun then it is a lovely complex and I would go again.

Peace and Quiet

from NSinUAE
My wife and I stayed here for 6 nights in February. We especially enjoyed the unique check-in process. The flower greeting, the complemtary drink and casual sign-in were appreciated. We enjoyed our stay very much, even though as a couple with no children we did not take advantage of all the facilities and activities. The room was adequate. Several features were unusual, the step-down shower/ bath and the sun room and small balcony overlooking the lagoon. The buffet breakfast was fantastic. Lots of different foods to choose from and the egg-preparation station was unusual. The overall service at the resort was very good, even though the level of English left much room for improvement. We enjoyed taking advantage of the free bus shuttle and water taxi to visit the shopping area and the other hotels in the area. The beach front area was tainted with all of the vendor tents - not what one would expect from a resort area.
We found the resort quiet but this aspect was more appreciated after we went on a tour of the island and saw the tourist traps of Patong and other over-commerialized beach areas. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend the Laguna Beach Resort, especially to families.

Fantastic for the family

from MelbourneNikki
Stayed there with the family in January 2006. Weather was perfect. Staff very friendly. Hotel itself a bit tired but our 2 bedroom suite was excellent. Standard rooms need updating.
Waterslide and baby elephant a big hit with the kids.
Restaurants with in Laguna complex a bit pricy but plenty of variety outside the laguna complex.
Would highly recommend it for families but not for couples seeking a romantic getaway.
Will definately go again.

Stay here for the beach !

from Chefworks
My oldest friend and I just returned from a wonderful stay in Phuket. There is no reminder of the Tsunami and you would be hard pressed to find any evidence unless you look. The Laguna Beach Resort was acceptable as a beach front family style resort with waterfall pools and beach vendors - somewhat Disney style. The services in general are above average but the detioriorating rooms need some serious attention, especially when it comes to cleanliness. This is the perfect hotel complex for a family with children but I would suggest that romantic couples look elsewhere. Of the five hotel properties that occupy the Laguna 'Compound', I would take my wife back to the Banyon Tree in a flash. It depicts everything that a serene luxury property should.

Top Local Tips for Phuket

Phi-Phi doesnt worth Preffer JameBond-Phang-Na canoeing, and WhiteWater Rafting. The PhiPhi trip by speedboat is very tiring and all beaches are TOO grouded.

Restaurants Use the Black Cat restaurant in the local village outside Laguna

FantaSea Make sure you see it. Absolutely fantastic. Allow enough time to walk around outside and take it all in I would recommend at least an hour and a half. You can buy takeaway food there but the beffet is fantastic
