Not worth 5 stars...save your money

Having stayed in other 5 star resorts in Koh Samui and Thailand over the past 10 years, I expected a luxury hotel. The reasons it is not:

1. Typical resort greets guests with drinks, flowers, etc. This resort greeted us with a glass of tea and a drink menu to buy a drink. Our villa was not ready as they said the air conditioner was broken. They sent us to another villa which also had a broken air conditioner.

2. Our dinner at the beach front cafe was met with the baby being given a spoon rusted from top to bottom, paper napkins, mildewed chair and a 12 inch hair found in the soup. We also had to ask for silverware.

3. The sand is the worst in all of Thailand. It is rocky and impossible to walk on.

4. Room features are horrible. They are outdated, old, and both villas had broken tubs.

5. Food is horrible- Being Asian I am familiar with Thai food and what I was served at the Thai restaurant was not Thai. Also, it was terrible and served improperly.

6. Room amenities- Provided each day with a bowl of fruit that was old and only consisted of one apple and several oranges. Typical Thai resort will provide you with mongusteen, rombutans, passion fruit, lychee. etc. Also, they provided us with 3 cookies each day in a large jar and called it a traditional Thai biscuit. This is hilarious as they are basic cookies you can buy in bags of a hundred for pennies. They are basic cheap cookies typically eaten by southeast Asians but nothing special by any means. Then, they had the audacity to say that we could buy them from their gift shop.

7. Staff was totally unprofessional and could hardly speak English. Similarly, literature left in the rooms was grammatically incorrect and poorly written. They also had a cheap sign that said that mice and animals might be found in living conditions because they are not killed and a part of the natural habitat.

I have traveled the world and especially Thailand. I know a 5 star hotel and also know that I could have received better service at a 3 star. The cost was around $500.00 (USD)/day and I have seen better for around $50(USD) per day. This place was a rip off. I am still amazed at how it got 5 stars and good ratings. I am assuming that the raters have not stayed at comparable 5 star luxury hotels in the area.

Absolutely Amazing

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at Tongsai Bay for 11 nights during our honeymoon. I picked the Tongsai Bay as a surprise for my future wife and it was so perfect and romantic that she cried when we had to leave.

The staff are excellent which is a quality of the Thai people, however, you felt that they looked after and cared for you more than the other hotels that we stayed and visited during in time in Bangkok and Koh Sumui.
The food was first class from breakfast to lunch and evening meal. The prices were slightly expensive for Thailand; nevertheless, it is still somewhat cheaper than eating in most European countries.

The ever flowing supply of iced water and cold towels throughout the day helped you stay cool at the pool / beach. The pool and beach are very clean and private. There are no other hotels to share your space giving you that extra feeling of being on a very secluded island.

We stayed in room 214, which was the furthest away from the pool apart from 215 (Hideaway Cottage). It was very secluded for the private bath on the balcony which is great to use as the sun goes down to relax before getting ready to go out for the evening.

The cottages, Chef Chom's restaurant and pathways etc are being refurbished from October to December this year. Therefore, any comments you have read about the accommodation being not as expected will not be true from 2006. As you would expect, a busy resort must be maintained and Tongsai Bay is no different and carries out a refurbishment every two years (according to staff & travel guide).

If you want to remember a special occasion or a holiday for the rest of your life then the Tongsai Bay must be considered.

My wife and I will definitely be returning in the near future.

Superb Tongsai Bay

If I had a choice of any resort I have been to that I could return to, it would be here. We stayed here in July and the place is amazing. I have been lucky enough to stay at some amazing places in my time but this takes the prize for service and relaxation. What makes this place so special is the service, all of the staff seem to work with a smile on their faces and seem genuinely happy to help you. Around the pool they bring you iced water and cold towels regularly and even give you a flag to wave to the bar staff if you need additional drinks!

Food was fantastic, more expensive than you would expect in Thailand so dont eat in the hotel if you are expecting three courses for £2.50! Having said that compared to "rip off" Britain this was A LOT cheaper. Even though it was dearer than outside we ate in the hotel for probably 6 of the 10 nights we were there and also ate lunch there most of the days. From a chicken sandwich to an al-a-carte Thai meal, I can honestly say that there was not one serving that was not delicious.

The rooms are made up twice a day and are great. We had a cottage suite which overlooked the bay and was secluded enough for us to use the bath on the balcony. Views from the balconies all appeared to be great as they are all set into the hillside that surrounds the bay.

I cannot rave about this place enough and for those that have complained, then they must have very high standards (which will never be met) or they enjoy complianing too much!!

If you are going to Samui stay here I loved it and will be going back!!

the best in Samui, a little bit overpriced restaurant but amazing; out of crowd, but if you want, in ten minutes in Chaweg-caos.

February In Samui

Stayed for 5 nights in a Cottage suite and can only compliment the Management and staff for a wonnderful freindly run hotel in a beatiful location. The only downside is that the rooms/suites and even the Tongsai Grand Villas are in desperate need of refurbishment and modernisation. Don't be put off because the rooms (I talk of the cottage suites) are very spacious with an outside garden bathroom and massage area at the rear, a large glass shower cubicle in the garden with the entrance inside the room. An inside bathroom and a wonderful bath on your balcony. Inside the rooms are on three levels with your bedroom leading downstairs to a stting room with TV, DVD and mini bar, outside and down some more stairs to your outside balcony. Room 215 is the best of the Cottage suites being detached and a superb uninterupted sea view, most of the others have a sea view but some are restricted. The view from room 232 is shown in the pictures on this page. The interior of the rooms are very dark and the furniture dated with very little lighting and it is the one thing that lets the hotel down.

The food in all the restaurants is really first class and not particularly expensive for this type of hotel, of course some of the people who travel to Thailand will tell you that they can eat out for a week on what it will cost you for one meal in Floyds. You get what you pay for and in my humble opinion this hotel provides good value for money. Of course wine (being a luxury in Thailand and taxed accordingley) is exceptionally expensive.

The grounds are well maintained and the staff we found to be very helpful and pleasant and we cannot fault the service, especially at the beach and poolside where they looked after you with complimentary cold drinks, cold towels etc.

The beach is rough coral and not very pleasant to walk on and during our stay the sea was quite rough and on two days the red flag was out. Completely different to the next week at Le Royal Meridien where the sea was perfect.

Tongsai is within easy reach of Chaweng (if that is what you want) 200 B's by hotel taxi. Chong Mon & Bo-Phut.

Overall a good place for a holiday but if I was totally honest it does not warrant a 5 star rating, but some people will prefer the less stuffy environment and charm of the place

Pure Heaven

Got back last week from Tongsai Bay,what a place so sad to leave,I was on my honeymoon for 2 weeks and we loved the place,so peaceful we loved the half moon swimming pool you could hear a pin drop, total chillout.
As for the food it was LUSH,chef choms, floyd's beachside restrauant and our favourite Butlers we could not fault it,Waistband says it all.
Room brilliant, staff amazing, views amazing,Koh Samui beautiful we will be back sooner rather than later.

A piece of paradise

Myself and my husband have just returned from our honeymoon after spending 10 days at the Tong Sai.
Well what can i say- in fact nothing i do say can give this place justice really.
Everything about the place was superb-service,accomodation,food, location.
We stayed in a cottage suite overlooking the sea. It was very private and secluded - enough for use the bath outside. The room itself was lovely and we couldn't fault it.
What really made it for us were the staff. They are fantastic. They anticpate your every need and really make the effort to ensure your stay is memorable. The food was also great. We ate in each restaurant and again couldn't fault it- it is slightly more expensive than you would expect tp pay in thailand but remember this is 5 * and the food was excellent.
To put things in perspective we went onto dubai when we left tong sai and stayed at the Burj Al Arab- and i can honestly say they need to take a few lessons off tong sai in regards to service and luxury. It is the first time ever i have been upset to leave somewhere.Anyone who has complained on this website about the hotel is obviously off a different planet.
We loved the place and will definately return in a few years for our anniversary!

Fantastic

from Tripadvisoruser
Tongsai Bay is a fantastic place. It is like a little oasis of luxury and if service, decent rooms and wonderful food are important to you then you will absolutely love this place.

The staff are what make this place really special. Everybody is genuinely friendly and they seem to anticipate your every need. The little flags on the beach are brilliant and the free iced water and cold towels that are brought around at regular intervals throughout the day are very welcome!

The rooms (we stayed in the standard room) are huge, so clean and well maintained with fabulous views out over the pool and sea. The beach is more coral than sand but it is immaculate - unlike Chaweng beach and is so quite because it is private.

The Thai restaurant Chef Choms is brilliant and reasonably priced considering the quality of the food and the fact that you are in a five star hotel.

All in all this is a really lovely place and I wouldn't hesitate to return - in fact it is probably the only thing that would make me want to go back to Ko Samui.

Epitome of first class

Everything about this hotel was first class.

Staff and service
We've never stayed in a hotel where the staff are genuinely happy and available to be at your service. They all smile and greet you as you walk by.

Location
Superb!! We had driven around the island the day before we checked-in to the hotel. We were disappointed to see the the various beaches weren't as beautiful as imagined. However, the hotel beach was kept so clean and not a seaweed insight!! They provide you with a a free non-motorised water sports facilities (Kiyake, windsurf, snorkles). The downside was that the beach wasn't soft sand but part sand and stones. Beautiful views and surrounded by nature!!

Villas
On arrival, to our surprise we were informed that we had been upgraded to a Villa (we had booked a seafront cottage). The bacony consisted of a Gazebo, Bath tub, 2 sun loungers, dining area and a sink!! Kept immaculately clean. Our house keeper visited us twice a day. To clean the villa and provide you with complimentary snacks and before bedtime to prepare your bed and find out if you need anything.

Facilities
2 swimming pools (fresh water and beach pool). Dining provided you with lots of tasty and fantastic options. Spa's were wonderful. They provied you with the softests and whitest towels you'll ever see and feel.

Overall
We didn't want to leave. Tongsai Bay was our holiday on Samui. Secluded and perfect. Romantic and more suited to couples than families, but everyone was made to feel welcome! We would highly recommend Tongsai Bay. And will be retuning!

PS. the perfect place to watch sunrise (5am - 6am) and look at stars (clear skies and not affected by city lights).. i also saw my first shooting star!

Absolutely superb

We had a memorable 10 days in this beautiful resort. Although it is expensive by Thai standards, we could not fault the quality of the food or the service we received and felt it was money well spent. The only criticism I would make was that it was so relaxing and beautiful that whenever we ventured outside of Tongsai Bay, we could not wait to get back there.

Very many happy memories.

Top Local Tips for Koh Samui

Chaweng Beach This beach is very dirty and crowded - maybe suitable for young backpackers but I would not come back as it was disappointing

Buy drinks in Cheweng. We liked to have a pre dinner drink on our balcony. If you nip into Cheweng and buy your beer/drinks it is lots cheaper than hotel drink prices. You can then store your beer in the room fridge.

Massages/Treatments If you go into Choeng Mon or Chaweng you can have an hour's massage for 250 - 400 bhat (around £5). The places are not as plush as the hotel spas but are considerably cheaper.
