Awful hotel & rude staff

The hotel is outdated and the rooms, although not cramped, were dirty and shabby with peeling paint and curling carpets. The staff moved us after the bathroom flooded and the drains blocked but the next morning at checkout the manager demanded to know why we hadn't left the hotel when we pointed out its shortcomings. He coined the classic phrase of "it's not my problem' when I pointed out his hotel was unclean and overpriced. An experience not to be repeated, I would advise staying in any of the hotels in the vicinity for a fraction of the price where the aircon actually works and the know the meaning of clean bed linen and towels.

Viengtai Hotel, is a 4 star hotel for 1 star prices. Everyone was very happy, polite, helpful and delighted that my friend and I decided to stay there. They did everything to make our stay there as comfortable as possible. I would definately go back and stay there. And I highly recommend it to anyone who is staying in that area, which is most tourists. It is near Khao san Road, which is amazing. A Great place to stay.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Viengtai Hotel near Khao Sarn Road

Clean, Good value, Great location.

from Beerboy
Hotel was clean, service was adequate, location was perfect. The area around the hotel is safe with plenty of restaurants, bars, thai massage clinics. Kao San Road (vibrant backpacker street) is very close. Nearby market is interesting as well. The hotel pool was quaint and really nice. Breakfast buffet was plentiful and good. You can store bags at this hotel for a nominal fee. We left them there for over 1 week until we returned to Bangkok after travelling up north. Beware of shaddy tuk tuk drivers as they're all trying to rip you off and not worth the stress. Take a more comfortable cab ride instead with air conditioning. It's probably a lot more healthy for you as well. All in all, this hotel is a great place to base your Bangkok trip.

The best is the location - Good value for money

from RACA
The hotel is a good value for money. The location is the best. Staff is helpful and friendly, all speak English. Also important is the fact that every taxi driver knows it, so you don't need to explain what is your target. Fair breakfast, both ABF and local food. Swimming pool is nice.

BUT, we booked two connected room, since we have 3 young children. The hotel got this reservation, but didn't have any connected rooms for us. More over, they didn't have room for 3 near room for two, for the first night. We had to get two rooms for two, with additional bed. These rooms are smaller than those we paid for. They didn't want to refund us, since it was already prepaid.

Good Value- but some mixed feelings

from A TripAdvisor Member

- Breakfast bar is decent offering Thai, Chinese and Western breakfasts. Price of hotel includes breakfast.
- Hotel is very cheap.
- Staff are courteous.
- Rooms are ok- mildew in the bathroom, but otherwise everything is clean and spacious.

- Security is poor. You can pretty much walk up to the front desk and ask for a room key without being asked for ID. But at least they have a safe deposit at the front desk.

- The street surrounding the hotel is pretty disgusting- but then again most of Bangkok is that way so I'm not counting that against the hotel.

- There is ABSOLUTELY NO INTERNET in the hotel. You have to go to a neighboring internet cafe which are usually jammed pack and the connection is about as fast as a modem.

- The "Concierge" desk is actually a tour desk and is only helpful if you intend to shell out money for them to take you on a tour- after which be ready for incessant sales pitches while on your ride to the destination.

- Also the tour person (Mr. T) likes to play and sing (yes "Sing") old Elvis, Nat King Cole, John Denver, and Frank Sinatra songs- so if you are not into that then you are better off negotiating a regular cab on the street to take you on your tours. We humored him the first few times but when he also wanted to play his tapes at 4am in the morning to the airport, that's when we had to stop him. On the positive side, Mr. T. does give you historical information about the places you go to. If you decide you want to go to Ayutthaya, Mr. T. will try to sell you a trip to the Summer Palace for a little more money. Ignore it unless it is something you know you really want to do. I went on the Summer Palace trip and frankly was not impressed. Similarly Mr. T will offer to sell you a trip to the floating market. Again, it's ok if you really want to do it- but keep in mind that the floating market is really staged for tourists benefit.

- People say that this hotel is in a great location - near Khao Sarn Road and the other major attractions. As far as I can tell the only major attraction it is near is the Grand Palace- unless you consider hanging around a bunch of white college kids an attraction.
Normally walking a mile or 2 to a venue is not a problem except in Bangkok you really need to wear a breathing mask to get past the pollution- it is that bad. If you suffer from Asthma, bring an inhaler. Avoid the Tuck tuck (like mini scooters) if possible. There is no way they would pass as passenger vehicles in the US. Also at the end of the trip you are saturated with all the pollution from the streets. So take a taxi to where you need to go. Yes there is a lot of traffic but taxis are dirt cheap.

Basic Hotel in Good Location

My friend and I stayed here twice: on the beginning leg of our vacation in Thailand and the very end. For the beginning, there were no real complaints. There is nothing extraordinary about the hotel or the rooms in fact. They serve a big breakfast, but we found it very average at best. However, when we returned at the end of the trip, we had a rough time. First, there was a vile smell of sewage when we were taken to our room. It was so overwhelming we were forced to call the concierge to ask to be moved. We realized that the problem affected the entire hotel, as even though we were upgraded to a nicer room, the smell was there, but not as offensive as in the first room. The staff tried to be accomodating by having someone come up to spray the room with airfreshner. The smell was even more rancid in the bathroom so I tried to limit my time there. However, when taking a shower, I noticed mold and dust on the ceiling which my head was just a few inches from touching b/c the ceiling was so low.

The location is really good though, although you do get some street noise. I found it just okay.

Good value, great location

I have stayed at the Viengtai Hotel twice now. The hotel and its rooms are a little old, but its location is excellent. This hotel is definitely a great place to stay if visiting the Banglamphu/Khao San Road area. The breakfast buffet is more than adequate and the hotel has a small pool which is great to help relieve some of that Bangkok heat!

The hotel caters for all types, however is especially great for those who want to experience the area but dont want to stay in a shabby guest house or who are travelling as a couple or with children.

One minor downside is that the rooms facing the road tend to be a little noisy, however, it is not so bad that its impossible to sleep.

Loved it

from Captain_Caveman
if you want to be in the heart of it off Khao San Road then this is a great hotel. The rooms were basic but very clean. Breakfast (Ours was included) was more than adequate. Downside to our room was the noise coming from the bar opposite until 3 in the morning.

I would stay again so it wasn't that bad

fantastic cheap hotel

Stayed here for two night with intrepid group. the hotel is basic but very clean. rooms are large with fridge, tv etc. breakfast is really good and found staff to be helpful - stayed an extra night on my own and received a good discount because of intrepid.

the hotel is in a fantastic location, just a street behind Koh san road, however this is not fantastic at night as we were placed in a room at that side and the noise from outside kept us up all night! also there was a burglary in the room across from us - apparantly gangs sit outside the hotel and phone rooms to see whether the room is free or not - so beware as it is a large hotel with people coming and going all the time.

overall, though highly recommended

Our Hotel in Bangkok

Great part of Bangkok (been twice) in the Banglamphu area (the older part of the city) with easy access to the river ferry/taxi and then to the sky train. Not a fancy hotel, but very comfortable, clean with great AC and water pressure (especially in the newer part of the hotel)

Poor service ruins the experience

from manterv
While the hotel in general, the room, and the breakfasts met my expectations, the service was so poor as to be ridiculous. In spite of there frequently being four unoccupied staff members behind the desk, it was difficult to get anyone to help me. The only time someone seemed glad to see me was when I checked out! Requests for information that a concierge might normally provide were met with shrugs and silence. Directing me to the nearest tourist information center would have been too much to ask?

Also, why there is a smarmy taxi hawker at the door masquerading as a concierge is beyond me. This man assaulting guests coming and going trying to rip them off with overpriced taxis when a metered cab is available for a tenth the price just outside the door.

t ask for more !!

We loved staying at Viengtai Hotel. It is one street back from Koah San Rd in a much quieter, but really lovely street. A really superb location (I hated the city centre). The breakfast was great, staff fantastic and friendly - nothing was too much trouble. We were able to check in at 9am and check out isn't until 12noon. We could also leave our bags in a secure area. There are lots of massage places, internet, food places, clothing stalls just outside - and a sensational travel agent (maybe Pattaya Travel?). There is also a pool at the hotel (although we didn't use it). Air-con was great, beds were great, everything great. A great start to our trip ! Highly recommended.

Top Local Tips for Bangkok

mayom puri if you stay at the viengtai it is compulsory to spend a night dining at mayom puri...a 5 minute walk and amazing spectacular place nestled amongst a grungy area

wow for a gorgeous looking restaurant and place for a drink when staying in khaosan head to mayon puri (5 minute walk) open from 3pm. If youre sick of thai food go to sarahs israeli restaurant in a little land behind the policwe station for great middle eastern food...very cheap

Taxis As per every country, taxis are to be watched as some will try to rip you off, always negotiate a prices before you start your journey.
